As I mentioned in my portion of the stewardship letter, 2005 will be a time of simplifying operations to help accomplish that: one priest and one rectory. It should be noted that even at our present level of operations we are in deficit and we need growth in our pledging to have a stable and responsible starting point from which to move into the future. I believe that should include a parttime sexton on the Staff. I believe God is calling us to a very good future. Our foundation is always those basic ministries through which Christ grows in us and reaches out to others. Deepening our spiritual life through prayer and bible study; our Monday night study of the Acts of the Apostles is off to a good start. Feel free to join us at any time. The Pastoral Care ministry is gaining strength and we are forming an Evangelism Mission Team which will have its initial meeting on Wednesday, November 10th at 7 p.m. (Woodward Hall). This group will work on spiritual renewal, developing intentional invitation events, new member integration and ministry with inactive members. If you would like to be a part of this ministry please contact me. I look forward to continue to find more ways to work with our children, youth, and families. Our first Advent Family Sunday (see the article inside) is the type of inter-generational event which can strengthen our sense of being a parish family for all the generations. As we enter the holiday season of November and December, there will be many events and services at St. Stephen s that will deeply enrich our lives. So...take a step forward in faith for St. Stephen s. In our giving of time, talent and treasure we have a vital part in God s work in our parish. In God s Peace, Father Hagerman
Page 2 NOVEMBER 2004 The Severn Light The Severn Light NOVEMBER 2004 Page 11 ADVENT FAMILY SUNDAY December 5th A PARISH EVENT FOR EVERY GENERATION OF OUR PARISH FAMILY. ALL ARE INVITED THEME A Christian Spirit in a season of giving; Learning from St. Nicholas 9:10 9:50 a.m. A time for learning and a family craft in the Parish Hall Let s have a special coffee hour this day. Everyone is invited to bring a special seasonal treat. PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD is the keynote theme of Advent. We do this preparation in the midst of a fairly frantic consumer culture. We can forget whose birthday it is we are preparing for. St. Nicholas (Bishop of Myra in the 4th Century) and the Three Wisemen of Matthew s Gospel are the Christian origins of gift giving. In recalling this during Advent, a concern for others and perhaps a greater simplicity can help shape our experience of a season which is a call to live in hope as God s promise to be for us Emmanuel which means God with us is made new every year.
Page 10 NOVEMBER 2004 The Severn Light PARTNERS IN STEWARDSHIP Chick-fil-a?! Chick-fil-a, a fast food restaurant located at The Village at Waugh Chapel in Gambrills, has proposed a way to partner with local churches in fundraising. They are offering us a way to help our church while we support their business. This is their proposal: Have those who attend your Saturday or Sunday services keep the cover page of the bulletin and bring it to Chick-fil-a at the Village at Waugh Chapel anytime on the following Monday. When they make their purchase and turn in their bulletin, we will record the net amount of their purchase on the face of the bulletin. We will keep the bulletins, and at the end of the month we will write a check to your church for 10% of those purchases. As an example, suppose 100 of those who attend your service bring a bulletin cover and each spend $5. for a meal. Your church would receive a contribution of $50. Any order, no matter how large or small, can be credited to your church as long as a bulletin is presented with the order. We do not have to sign up. As soon as the first bulletin is turned in, we are on their program. So how many of you will be willing to give up that hamburger for the sake of St. Stephen s? Time will tell.. EAT CHICKEN!! The Severn Light NOVEMBER 2004 Page 3 Music Notes by Don Chandler, Organist-Choirmaster The 23rd annual Naval Academy Choral Festival makes a wonderful way to celebrate the fall season and good music. Members of both of our singing choirs will contribute by singing in this gathering of 20 church choirs and midshipmen (and -women) in the Chapel of the Academy. Mark your calendars: November 7 (Sunday) at 7:00 p.m. Photo ID is required for access to the Academy grounds. Park in the Historic District near gate 3 (bottom of Maryland Avenue) for the shortest walking route. The Chapel is the cathedral building near that gate. Every Festival brings lots of choral and congregational singing in addition to great organ playing on the four-manual pipe organ, in a cathedral-sized space! Don't miss it! Instrumentalists are needed for Christmas Eve. If you play an instrument, please let this director know so he may include you and your instrument in the plans. Christmas Eve is on a Friday this year. We plan 3 services. We hope to have a youth orchestra and choir again this year at 8:00 p.m. The professional string ensemble again will accompany the Senior Choir at midnight Eucharist, starting at 10:30 p.m. Enjoy the best of the best time of the year: music in church during Autumn, '04. Yours for church music, Don Chandler, ChM, CAGO Help Wanted Looking for a Substitute Teacher for our Nursery. Must love children, crushed goldfish and the Wiggles. Prefer an Anne Arundel County teacher but all who are interested should apply. Hours are Sundays from 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Compensation based on experience. Call
Page 4 NOVEMBER 2004 The Severn Light Church School The Church School continues to grow! We are have registered over 70 children and we have been welcoming new children each week. We have classes for pre-schoolers through high school. If you haven t registered your children yet, it is not too late. Come join the fun! Our Nursery has welcomed several new preschoolers this year. Meredith Kelly has been reading stories and planning activities for our youngest children. This month, the children have been making animals for their own arks. As this age group continues to grow, we are considering opening a separate Preschool Class (3 and 4 year olds). We have a classroom for this group, but we will need several teachers to lead it. If this is an area that you would like to help, please contact Jenny or Margaret. November 7 th is All Saints Day and our second Family Sunday. Each church school class will present a project relating to the All Saints theme. We are sure you will enjoy this. The next Family Sunday will be on December 5 th. Father Hagerman and Berney have something special planned for this day. Stay tuned for more information. Dianne (Fyfe) Newman has graciously volunteered to lead our Christmas Pageant Committee again this year. The Pageant is always a highlight of the season and the children love being involved in this wonderful story. However, it takes lots of hands to keep the angel wings on and the sheep in a line. If you would like to help, please call or Jenny or Margaret. Please note that Church School will be closed on November 28 th for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you to our wonderful teachers for sharing their time and faith with our children. Jenny Levendusky Margaret Duffy jlevendusky@comcast.net mduffys@earthlink.net The Severn Light NOVEMBER 2004 Page 9 HURRICANE IVAN RELIEF REPORT My Brother s Keeper wishes to thank all the people of the Parish who helped in gathering supplies for Hurricane Ivan relief. We were able to send canned goods, paper products, medical supplies, linens, and clothes to people in great need. We sent a goodly supply of water as well. Our total was 22 cartons, weighing over 650 pounds. These supplies are being sent to the Smith family in the small town of Citronelle, Alabama. They in turn, will transport the goods to Gulf Shores for distribution there. As most of you know, Gulf Shores is where the hurricane first came ashore, with devastating results. Many people in that town lost everything they possess. You can only imagine what it means to them to receive these supplies. This is the largest undertaking we have ever tried and could not have accomplished it without the help of many. We were able to take advantage of a special program UPS offers non-profit organizations. Out Senior Warden, Bob Scheina, was invaluable in helping with negotiations with the carrier. The people of UPS were ever patient in leading us through the process. We are grateful to all who participated, and we know the people who receive the aid are grateful also. Jane Mace HOLIDAY SHARING WITH EDGE Our Middle School Youth group, EDGE, has voted to continue sponsoring the collection of food to be distributed through the County s Holiday Sharing Program. You can help them by taking a leaf off their Autumn Giving Tree (which will be up on their Bulletin Board in Parish Hall) and bringing in the item(s) specified. Please put your contributions in the narthex harvest basket. As always they appreciate your support. EDGE meets the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of the month at 5:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. All 6, 7 & 8 th grade kids are welcome NEW SCHEDULE FOR SEVERN LIGHT Our parish newsletter, The Severn Light, will be published seasonally instead of monthly. The next issue will be mailed by December 1 and will be our Advent- Christmas issue. The following one will be sent in
Page 8 NOVEMBER 2004 The Severn Light Help spruce up St. Stephen s at PARISH CLEAN UP DAY Severn Parish Cemetery Giving tribute to those unknown Saturday November 13 9:30 a.m. til the job is finished! Bring your garden tools and brooms All are welcome to come! St. Stephen's Guild approved funds to purchase several small grave monuments for our cemetery. There are grave plots marked on the 1911 survey map which have no names entered in the burial register; thereby attempting to make contact with families impossible. Some recent observations by a visiting Archeological Consultant revealed that many of the unmarked graves may contain slaves, unbaptized children and women who died while giving birth. These monuments will define the many areas throughout the cemetery where loved ones were buried and now will be given some identity. Engraved on each granite monument will be a cross with the assigned lot and grave number identified on the survey map. The Guild is to be commended for this loving contribution to our parish cemetery. Jean Sunday Cemetery Administrator The Severn Light NOVEMBER 2004 Page 5 ET Variety Show Success: I would like to personally thank all participants and supporters of the ET Variety Show. It was a sell out!! This was our first Variety Show - as I am sure it showed. We kept our expectations low and our spirits high and I believe it proved to be a wonderful night of fellowship and fun. It is a continued joy for me to witness the coming together of all the generations of St. Stephen s. I am blessed to be part of such a wonderful church family. ET Holiday Pies: It s that time of year again! ET will be baking holiday pies for Thanksgiving. Deep Dish Apple (freshly peeled and cored Granny Smith) and Pumpkin will be available for purchase. Be first in line to place your order as we will only be making a limited number. I would like to thank the ET parents and the congregation in advance for their help with this effort. Proceeds will Fund ASP ET Coat Collection: ET will be collecting coats again this winter. This collection will take place November 13 th thru January 2 nd. Please bring all of your old coats and sweatshirts to Church during these Sundays. Please limit your donations to winter wear.
