Page 3 The Epiphany of the Lord - January 6, 2019 A Le er from Fr. James Dear Parishioners, Today, we celebrate Epiphany Sunday. This special feast, celebrated on January 6, commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Baby Jesus. Some Eastern Rite Churches celebrate their Christmas on this day. Epiphany simply means the manifesta on of Jesus Christ to the gen le world. One common ques on that many people ask about the celebra on of Epiphany is that: If the Magi were called Wise Men because they followed the star to find the child Jesus, is it okay then to believe in horoscope? The answer is No! Horoscope is a form of idolatry - a sin against the First Commandment: I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me. (Exodus) Horoscope readers need to ask themselves who is in charge of their lives, the stars or God? Believing that the stars control our lives contradicts our belief that God is in charge of our lives. The Church states clearly in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that: All forms of divina on are to be rejected: recourse to satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or prac ces falsely supposed to unveil the future. Consul ng horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpreta on of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums; all conceal a desire for power over me, history, and in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone. (CCC 2116) All prac ces of magic or sorcery, by which one a empts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one s service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These prac ces are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the inten on of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the interven on of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiri sm o en implies divina on or magical prac ces; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called tradi onal cures does not jus fy either the invoca on of evil powers or the exploita on of another s credulity (CCC 2117). Why then do we call them Wise Men? They were called Wise Men because they were pagans, seeking God. Before they set out on their journey to Bethlehem to worship Jesus, they were star-readers; however, their journey was both a physical and interior journey that led them from paganism to being worshipers of Christ. Fr. James

Family Ac vity for Epiphany: A House Blessing The Feast of Epiphany is a perfect day to gather your family together to ask God s blessing on your home and for all who live and visit within it. It is an invita on for Jesus to remain at the center of every home throughout the new year. The Blessing can be done simply by using chalk to write over the door: 20 + C + M + B + 19 (The 20 + 19 represents the year and the C, M, B are twofold: They are the first ini als of the three Magi, but also ini als for the La n blessing, Christus mansionem benedicat, meaning Christ bless this house. ) Offer the following prayer: Oh blessed Lord, visit this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gi of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you. Guide, comfort and strengthen us in peace, Oh Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
