Knights of Columbus Logotype March 2013 Page 1 News & Views Our Monthly Newsletter A note from the Editor I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. - Jesus of Nazareth Phil Riordan, Editor phil@riordanhome.com 941-924-5906 He loves us without limit, and offers Himself to us in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. Can we not give Jesus a few minutes of love and adoration in return? On the third Tuesday of each month, our Council participates in the Eucharistic Adoration at the Church Chapel. We are assigned the 5:30 to 6:00 pm time period. The Council s next Eucharistic Adoration will be on Tuesday, February 19th. Questions? Please contact Grand Knight Steve Christie at 924-3447. Grand Knights Report Can anyone complain about the weather in Sarasota thus far this winter? No wonder we all want to live in this part of the country. Many of us, however, have relatives living in areas that have had to endure a truly harsh winter. Please remember to keep all of those who have suffered hardships, especially those living in the area hard hit first by Hurricane Sandy, and followed by a couple of major snowstorms. They could certainly use our prayers. Remember also to continue praying for Bishop Dewane as he continues to recover from his hipreplacement infection-related illness. I was at a luncheon the other day and listened to Bishop Dewane's brother-in-law tell us that the Bishop is likely to be in recovery mode until at least May. He can surely use our prayers. Pray also for Pope Benedict as he prepares for retirement, and for the person who will follow him as the leader of our Church. With March upon us and spring only a few weeks away, we are now in what is arguably the busiest time of the year. March 2013 Page 2 Grand Knights Report (continued) number of Brother Knights now that Spring Training has begun. Friday Night Bingo is going strong, and volunteers will soon be needed to help with Special Olympics activities. Please be as generous with your time volunteering whenever you are able. If anyone is interested in going through the Chairs as a Council Officer, please make yourself known to one of the current Council Officers. Being an officer does not entail an unreasonable amount of time, and can be a truly enjoyable way in which to fully participate in the Knights of Columbus. As always, thank you for everything that you are doing to help keep Incarnation Council strong. It is truly a pleasure to be able to work alongside each and every one of you as we do what we can to assist our priests and our Parish. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Vivat Jesus, Steve Christie Grand Knight District Deputy Report There will be no report from our District Deputy Tom Anzelone as he is recovering from surgery. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Field Agent Report Renew what's important to you Spring is a time for renewal. Trees and plants will soon be blooming, and many animals will shake off the cold and become active again. As the winter doldrums end, you'll be ready to get outside with your family, too, and be part of this renewal. It is also a perfect opportunity to take a few moments to consider your goals and what's important to you and your loved ones. Are you planning to welcome a new child or sending one to college? Are you looking forward to retirement? Will you have enough money to accomplish these goals? What would happen if something happened to you? Wellness Section If you are aware of a Brother or their family member who are ill or in need of support, please contact Health Services Director Bill Huber at 921-1514 or Grand Knight Steve Christie at 924-3447. March 2013 Page 3 Field Agent Report (continued) Whether or not you have life insurance with the Order, I'll be happy to meet with you and examine how you can meet your needs and goals. If you've had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.), chances are your life insurance needs to be updated. Maybe an annuity or long-term care plan appeals to your situation. Whatever the case, I'll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford. When we meet, you'll discover that the time we spend together will be a commitment to your future and your family's well-being. Let's get together soon to renew your financial goals with the stable backing of the Knights of Columbus. Call me - let's talk. Vivat Jesus! Jerry Hayes KofC Field Agent 941-921-2161 Jerry.hayes@kofc.org. CITIZENS WITH DISABILITIES DRIVE IS A SUCCESS ONCE AGAIN During late January and early February, Incarnation Council conducted its "Second Annual Citizens with Disabilities Drive." As the result of the efforts of Brother Knights, who "shook the can" during three weekends, the Council collected $2,805.00. During this year's drive, Incarnation Parishioners donated $1,000.00. At the two Publix Super Markets - Sarasota Village Plaza and Bay Street and Trail - we collected $1,805.00. After deducting the Florida State Council and Tootsie Roll costs, the remaining funds will be donated to Dreams Are Free School and Special Olympics of Sarasota. The success of this most worthwhile effort was dependent on the leadership of Deputy Grand Knight Art Reilly, this year's Chair, and the participation of many Brother Knights and Ladies - John Albrecht, Steve Anderson, Steve Christie, Mike Clayton, Cindi and Charlie Culkin, Jim Duggan, Gabe Febbraio, Ed Goddard, Terry and Trevis Hamilton, Jerry Hayes, Bill Huber, Glenn Kelley, Dennis Kennedy, Jim Listwan, Angela and Jorge Lopez-Diaz, Jose Matos, Don Naber, Jason Peters, Tom Polit, Art Reilly, Jim Reynolds, Phil Riordan and Tony Tambini. Special thanks go out to Brothers Terry and Trevis Hamilton, who worked four two-hour shifts at the Publix Stores. Also, we had a Brother Knight from a Chicagoarea Council - Bart Pinto - who worked two Masses and a Publix shift. Thank you Brother Bart. COUNCIL RECOGNIZES CLERGY AND ALTAR SERVERS Incarnation Council recognized all the Priests, Deacons, and Altar Servers who serve Incarnation Parish at its Annual Clergy and Altar Server Recognition Dinner. The event was held on Wednesday, February 6th in the Parish Center. Over 65 Clergy, Altar Servers and their families and Brother Knights attended the event. The event started off with a delicious dinner of green salad, pizza and dessert. After dinner, the Council recognized Father Bernie Evanofski, Father Mike Scheip, Father Leo Smith, Deacon John Crescitelli, Deacon and Joe Cirieco for all their contributions to our Parish. Each of them received a Certificate of Recognition. continued on page 4... (C) Knights of Columbus - 2929 Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida 34239

March 2013 Page 4 (continued) Next, our Council recognized three "Altar Servers of the Year" from our Parish - Cherie Hawk, Jonathan Hawk and Camden Jenkins. They were chosen based on evidence of the Altar Server's current activity in their Church, school, community and home. Each Altar Server of the Year received a beautiful award with either a statute of our Blessed Virgin Mary or St. Joseph. In addition to the "Altar Server of the Year Awards," each Incarnation Altar Server received a Certificate of Recognition. Thanks to Chair Charlie Culkin and Steve Christie, Art Reilly, Phil Riordan, Jim Duggan and Tom Mancini for making the event a success. CORPORATE COMMUNION AND BREAKFAST Mark Your Calendar. The Council's last Corporate Communion Mass for the 2012-2013 fraternal year will be held on Sunday, May 5th at the 9:00 pm Mass. A Corporate Communion Mass is when we come together as a "Council Family" and attend Mass as a group. We will meet at 8:45 am in the Church Foyer. After Mass, we are going to motor over to The Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel (1540 Benjamin Franklin Drive) for a delicious breakfast - thanks to Brother Phil Riordan for making the arrangements. The hotel, which is located on Lido Beach, is a 15-minute drive from Incarnation Parish - take US 41 North to N Gulfstream Avenue, turn left and proceed across the John Ringling Causeway, follow SR 789 to St. Armand's Circle, take 2nd exit to John Ringling Blvd, stay straight to go onto Benjamin Franklin Drive and proceed about one mile to hotel, which is on the right. The Helmsley Sandcastle serves a buffet breakfast for $9.50 in its Coffee Room, which includes Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Hash Browns, Danish, Fruit, Assorted Cereals, Milk, Juice and Coffee. We can also order off their Breakfast Menu. It offers a wide variety of breakfast items. The hotel will be opening their Formal Dining Room for our group. We must give them a final count by Friday, May 3rd. If you would like to attend the breakfast, please contact Financial Secretary Charles Culkin via email (cinandchas@verizon.net) or by telephone (922-8726) by Noon on Friday, May 3rd. Hope you can attend the Corporate Communion Mass and Breakfast. continued on page 5... (C) Knights of Columbus - 2929 Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida 34239
