Teamwork Makes Our Dream Work Convention Issue State Deputy Message Brothers All: This is my first time to report to the Convention as a State Deputy. The State of the State is good. Members are passionate about their faith, their church and our challenges. The 113 th State Convention was a great success. Thanks to all who participated, and congratulations to all our award winners! The meetings, mass and banquet were well-attended. We are re-energized and ready to finish this year and begin preparing for the next. Celebrating our Catholicity and Knighthood means finding ways to serve our parish and our community, and encouraging other Catholic families to join with us so we all can do even more! The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. (Matthew 9:37-38) To make the harvest more bountiful, a membership contest for April 1 June 30 was announced last week. It will award prize money to the parishes of the winning councils. See the website for details, or check with your District Deputy. May God bless you all and the Knights of Columbus! TEAMWORK MAKES OUR DREAM WORK. Vivat Jesus! Faithfully, Steve

Knight of the Year Award Winner The Knight of the Year Award winner is selected from the Council Knight of the Year applications for the greatest individual contribution to the Tennessee Knights of Columbus for this past year. As Council Director, this year s winner headed up the two annuals BBQ s. He also helped set up and cook for the Annual Golf Tournament, and participates in the Knights Parking Valets events throughout the year. This helped the council raise $35,000 to donate to the benefits of others. This Brother also provides manual labor in support of the council. He helped build a ramp for a brother Knight whose wife suffered from ALS, pressure washed a brother s driveway, and helped trim trees after Storm Damage. This Knight takes an active role in purchasing and cooking foods for all the parish events. He also helped replace all the light fixtures in Breen Hall at St. Therese and repaired the ceiling in the Parish life Center. The 2016 Tennessee Knight of the Year, from Queen of Heaven Council #4572, is Mr. Charles Chuck Nelson. Family of the Year Award Winner When we think of the values of the Knights of Columbus, Faith, Family and Fraternity come to mind. After Faith, the Family is the cornerstone of our Church and our order. Today more than ever the institutions of marriage and family are under attack. As a result, a Family of the Year is not only honored in each jurisdiction, but Supreme s International Family of the Year is selected from the state winners. The Tennessee Family of the Year was selected from the Council Family of the Year applications for the greatest contribution to the Tennessee Knights of Columbus for this past year. This family is no stranger to the kitchen, performing meal prep, cook up, dishwashing and cleaning up. They set up a smoker for the annual council yard sale, have cooked pancakes with Santa, and a lot more. The children are just as active when they are in town. There are two in college, one serving our country in the US Army National Guard and one living at home. This family is also very active in their community, whether it is volunteering working with Kindergarten Children, or serving on the PTO council including time as president. The 2016 Tennessee Family of the Year from St. Stephens council #9282 is David and Jeanette Waters

Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 Jay Jacobs The Lifetime Achievement Award winner is selected from Council nominees for a Knight who have made the greatest impact on the order in Tennessee during his time as a Knight. The recipient must have been a Knight for at least 25 years. This Knight joined the Catholic Church in October 1965 and shortly after joined the order in Council #4972 in Nashville. He and his wife Mary led the council Bingo games, when it was legal. When the MR Foundation of Tennessee was being formed, this man helped to coordinate the Nashville planning and promotion for the fundraising with Tootsie Roll Drives and 3 Country Music Concerts. For at least two years, he and his daughters collected one third of the funds raised by his council. He has served the Foundation on the Davidson County Board of Special Housing Services, overseeing the operations of the two group homes and duplex in Nashville. He was also elected to State Office twice. He stepped down once to serve his brother Knights as an Insurance agent. When he left the agency and went back into the business world, he was again elected a State Officer. Midway into his 2 nd term as State Advocate, he suffered a major heart attack. After a lot of soul searching he stepped down knowing that his health and family came first. While our Lifetime Achievement winner is very well known throughout Nashville and Middle Tennessee, he is also known throughout the state as a former member of the traveling Third and Fourth Degree teams. In his parish, he has served on the Parish Council, and was a long time head usher. In the community he has served as President of the Purdue Alumni of Middle Tennessee, President of the Nashville Electric League and Vice President of the Nashville Chapter of Mended Hearts. While this is not a complete list of his accomplishments, it will do for this newsletter. Congratulations to the recipient of the 2016 Tennessee Lifetime Achievement Award, Jay Jacobs from St. Edwards Council #9586.

Youth Award 2016 The winner of the Youth Award for 2016 showed their support for youth and Special Olympians. This annual Knights vs the senior youth kickball game was changed this year. The Knights invited the senior youth of the parish, along with local Special Olympians and their families. Each team included Knights, youth and Special Olympians, no scores were kept and everyone kicked every inning. After the kickball game the Knights held a meal for all. There were 70-75 people fed. The fellowship was amazing. The council winning the Youth Award for 2015-2016 is Germantown Council #7449. Church Award 2016 The Council that has won the Church Award for 2016 took notice of the worn and tattered flag above their parish school. They decided to honor of their retiring priest by purchasing a new flag to fly over the school. The ceremony for the retirement of the flag was directed by 12 Knights and several parishioners. The council then purchased an engraved mantle showcase and encased the old flag for presentation for their retiring Priest. They presented the retired flag to Fr. Mike Johnston at a party held by their council. The council also honored Fr. Mike by giving a $500 scholarship to one 8 th grade girl and one 8 th grade boy to continue with their Catholic Education. The council winning the Church Award for 2015-2016 is St. Henry s council #12012.

Community Award 2016 The winner of the Community Award for 2016 helped provide a home for a single mother of two and assisted in building a better future for her family. In conjunction with 14 other groups this council provided 44 members to help build a home for that family over a single weekend working with Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County. This exemplifies the second principle of our order, unity. The winner of Community Award for 2015-2015 is Our Lady of the Lake council #9132. Council Award 2016 The winner of the Council Award for 2016 assisted families of Montgomery County whose lives are affected by drug and alcohol abuse. During the Council s annual Christmas Party, the council held a toy and clothing drive to support the Montgomery County Recovery Court and Veterans Court. These courts are volunteer programs to help those individuals and families who have struggled with abuse of drugs and alcohol. This year the council helped 14 families, including 24 children. This is a great example of the first principle of our order, charity. The Council Award winner for 2015-2016 is Fr. John Nolan Council #3537.

Culture of Life Award 2016 The Council that has won the Culture of Life Award for 2016 helped Protect Life with the purchase of an Ultrasound Machine for an RV-based pregnancy testing unit for Portico, a non-profit pro-life group in Rutherford County The Council s Culture of Life Director was approached by the Portico organization for help in fundraising for a mobile ultrasound machine for an RV that they already had received. After much prayer and getting approval from the council, the fundraising began. With appeals to the public and support from families, outside organizations and 6 other Knights of Columbus Councils, the funds were secured. After receiving matching funds from the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, an Ultrasound Machine Family Award 2016 The Council that has won the Family Award for 2016 assisted in their parishes marriage preparation class for couples. As many of you know, marriage in the Catholic Church requires a marriage preparation class. This council takes that responsibility seriously in hosting the entire weekend of talks and supporting the event. The couples attend Mass together at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Lenoir City. After Mass they are guests of honor at a special dinner hosted by Knights of the council and their wives. The knights and the wives serve as role models for the couples by examples of happy, successful and lasting marriages, including the number of years each has been married. They show how they support one another in their marriage through their physical, mental and was purchased to put into the RV. Congratulations St. Luke s Council #9168. spiritual support of the vocation and serve as being examples to the couples starting out. The Family Award winner for 2015-2016 is Fr. John Savoca Council #12633.

Vocations Award 2016 The Council that has won the Vocation Award for 2016 hosted their 25 th Annual Clergy Appreciation dinner, in support of the clergy in the Diocese of Knoxville. The evening started with the St John Neumann choir performing a special concert for the Clergy and other guests in the church. Following the concert, the clergy and guests shared a dinner at St. John Neumann School hosted by the council. During the dinner the Bishop acknowledged the priests, deacons and nuns in attendance. 91 clergy and religious members attended the event this year. The council winning the Vocation Award for 2015-2016 is Monsignor Edward Dolan Council #8781.
