He pointed out how tough it was to find a parking spot at the mall to buy those last-minute gifts; having to attend all those parties; and trying to find an ugly Easter sweater to wear to work. I have to admit that I too fall into the trap of seemingly placing more celebration on Christmas (while important, who can rise again if they are not born first?) than on Easter. Was family we used to save our major gifts for the kids (bikes, basketball poles, etc) or family trips (China, out west) for Easter. But it takes effort, as all special things should, to celebrate the rising of Christ. Council Mass & Lunch - April 29 th See the report on page 2 from PGK Joe Maher on this new event and please make plans to attend. This is a way for all experienced members and widows to meet new members and their families and share the history and future of the Council. Council elections are coming up. Let me know if you are interested in a position (page 3). Council Activities Columbian Club NOTICE June 20 th The previously scheduled Columbian Club meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather. The meeting has been scheduled for the second meeting in June (6/30) after the council meeting. Additional information will be forthcoming. Easter Egg Hunt Report Thanks to Phil Stiegler for arranging another successful Easter Egg Hunt! We counted over 100 kids at the event. As always the children were separated into groups based on age, and then were set to hunt for eggs. This year we had a mix of candy filled eggs and eggs containing religious items to remind the children what the season is all about. Thanks to Mike, Tom, Phil, Rick, Dave, Brian, Chris and Ron for helping out.. New Member & Family Welcome Lunch NEW TIME Sunday, April 29 th On Sunday April 29th we will have a New Member & Family welcome lunch. This is a great chance for new Knights and your families to have a great fraternal evening with some long time (and mid time!) Knights. Hear the great stories of the council from the past, offer your thoughts for the future, but most importantly, this is an opportunity to just get to know each other. The day will begin with the Council s first Communal Mass in many years at the 12 noon Mass, followed by lunch and fellowship in the West Room. The Council will provide the beverages, entrée, and salad, but we d like to ask everyone to bring a dish (side dish, salad, dessert) to share. All are invited and encourage to bring your families; new members can expect a special invitation in the coming week. If you are a new member, come out and bring your family to hear more about the storied history of Immaculate Lady Council at Sacred Heart. If you are a longtime member, come out with your family to welcome our newest Knights who are the future of our council. Stay tuned for more information soon! Lord God, we humbly ask You to bring us all back to You and help us to again respect life from womb to tomb. This is an update of the trial of David Deleiden the young man responsible for the videos which showed the illegal sale by Planned Parenthood of baby body parts. The judge, William Orrick III for this trial should have recused himself because he and his wife are both strong supporters of Planned Parenthood. Deleiden's defense attorneys petitioned the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to remove this judge, and now this Court has requested Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation to respond to the petition to remove the judge. This is finally some good news. A request for this trial to be taken to the Supreme Court has also been made. There have been more closures than openings of Planned Parenthood abortion facilities across the United States. In 2017, 35 surgical and 14 medical abortion facilities for a total of 49 either closed or halted operation; only 8 new surgical abortion facilities and 11 new medical facilities opened for a total of 19. Operation Rescue started collecting data from the abortion facilities in 2009. They call the places themselves asking for information which was given them. In 2009 there were 844 abortion facilities, 131 medical and 713 surgical; in 2017 there were 704 facilities, 214 medical and 496 surgical. Pill mills which medical abortion facilities are called are 4
becoming more popular and have been staying open while the surgical facilities have been closing in recent years. Planned Parenthood owns 49% of all abortion facilities and perform 39% of all abortions. There is a great spiritual battle going on in this country and the world. I ask you to pray as much as you can to bring everyone back to God and turn the hearts of everyone back to supporting all life, especially in the womb, and do as much as you can to fight abortion and assisted suicide. Contacting your elected legislators is also a big help. We can always use good men or women to help us pray at the abortion facility in Owings Mills every Saturday morning, and it is getting warmer now so it's a little easier. Bob Wagner (410) 833-7534 Chaplain Report God gave Moses the Ten Commandments so the people would know how to stay close to God. Without the law, we drift away from God. In the gospel Jesus tells us He s come to full the law. He tells us that the people who live and teach the law the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. The law is our faith. It s our belief in the Trinity, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the holiness of scripture. Faith calls us to forgive and to love. It s how we follow Jesus. I have a great admiration for people who teach the faith. Religious ed. Teachers, sacramental teachers and RICA instructors are why the Church exist. They take the word of God and the teachings of Jesus and pass it to the next generation. Their work vital to the parish, the Archdiocese and the Universal Church. But we can t let the heavy lifting be done to by a few. As Knights we are called to be an example of faith to other people. We are called live our faith so people will see that Christians have different values than secularists and that we are willing to sacrifice to live those values. Being a good example draws people to the faith. It shows that our love for God is liberating and brings meaning to life. God gave Moses the law to keep His people close to Him. He sent His only Son to redeem us. Our faith is how we follow Jesus. It s through faith that grow closer to Christ and through Christ grow closer to God our Father. Vivat Jesus! Deacon Jim Nuzzo Catechism Corner May the Grace of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit descend upon us and remain with us forever and ever. 5
What is our response to God's gift of Faith? God loves us all and wants us all to be with Him forever. Our response to God should be to obey the Word of God in how we live our lives. To do this we should make it a point to know our Faith which means we must seek it, read it and learn it so we can obey it, all of it, not only choose what we like, but to accept Scripture and all the teachings of the Church; so we can recognize heresy which is a teaching contrary to our Faith and reject it. Here are a few paragraphs from the Catechism regarding obeying our Faith. The Catechism can be found on the internet, and you can easily buy one. I use a CCC or Catechism of the Catholic Church which has paragraph numbers. There are many versions of the Catholic Catechism available with no numbering or different numbering than the CCC 144 To obey (from the Latin ob-audire, to "hear or listen to") in faith is to submit freely to the word that has been heard, because its truth is guaranteed by God, who is Truth itself. Abraham is the model of such obedience offered us by Sacred Scripture. The Virgin Mary is its most perfect embodiment. 145 The Letter to the Hebrews, in its great eulogy of the faith of Israel's ancestors, lays special emphasis on Abraham's faith: "By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go." By faith, he lived as a stranger and pilgrim in the promised land. By faith, Sarah was given to conceive the son of the promise. And by faith Abraham offered his only son in sacrifice. 148 The Virgin Mary most perfectly embodies the obedience of faith. By faith Mary welcomes the tidings and promise brought by the angel Gabriel, believing that "with God nothing will be impossible" and so giving her assent: "Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word."elizabeth greeted her: "Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."13It is for this faith that all generations have called Mary blessed 2087 Our moral life has its source in faith in God who reveals his love to us. St. Paul speaks of the "obedience of faith" as our first obligation. He shows that "ignorance of God" is the principle and explanation of all moral deviations. Our duty toward God is to believe in him and to bear witness to him My Brothers All, District Deputy Report I bring you greetings from our Worthy State Deputy, Stephen M. Cohen, who this year reminds us, it is not I, it is we, it is not our goal it is one Goal to make this the best year ever. It has been a great year; the District is up over 50% of our goal in membership. Three councils are very close to STAR this year. We have three months left with Admissions degree scheduled in the District every month: May 9-Sheen in Eldersburg June 19-Westminster again 6
Let s make the push. There will also be a Formation Degree May 10 and Knighthood Degree May 11 at Archbishop Fulton Sheen in Eldersburg. Let s help these men become better Knights and get them to the lessons the degrees teach. March 24 th, we had a Patriotic Degree Exemplification in Ocean City, 7 members of our District took the Degree, so I want to congratulate them all for taking the last Step. Congratulations Sir Knights. Most important was the fraternity these men saw at the exemplification and subsequent hospitality rooms in the evening. This, as during the convention, is a great time to meet new men and wives from around the State and build new friendships. There are only three months left in my term as your District Deputy. It has been a great two years; you have made me feel as a member of your councils. Thank you, but as I said three months, I am going to push to make this the best year ever, please join me and we can finish strong. Vivat Jesus Bill Adams-DD 21 "If It seems to goo to be true..." From the Desk of the Benefits Advisor If you are like me, you listen to the sports talk radio stations. And on weekend mornings they switch to paid programming featuring investment advisors talking about "retirement plans with a guaranteed rate on income". Actually, they are talking about annuities although they rarely if ever mention the word "annuity". Does it sound too good to be true? As they say, "the Devil is in the details". Annuities can be wonderful financial tools, but you have to know what you are doing to avoid pitfalls... (high fees, commissions, excessive penalties and penalty periods, and market investment risk). Generally speaking, the word "investment" and the word "guaranteed" are not legally compatible. As your Knights of Columbus Benefits Advisor, I am a licensed, trained professional who knows the ropes. I am here to help you make a good financial decision as a Brother Knight...giving you the same advice I would want you to give me if we traded places. Knights of Columbus annuities are very special because they are backed by the impeccable financial credentials of The Knights of Columbus. An annuity is only as good as the company writing it as we learned in the recent financial crisis. And with a KofC annuity, your principle and interest is indeed guaranteed against market loss, and 100% of your money goes to work for you right away with NO administrative fees or costs. Knights of Columbus annuities can be used as an IRA (including ROTHs) or a non-ira. This means you can open a pre tax or post tax annuity. Many families have both. This also means you can transfer or rollover your 401K. TSP, 403B, 457, IRA or any form of pension or profit sharing into a KofC annuity. Of course you can also have a KofC annuity with just regular savings funds. And remember, if you have a current KofC annuity, you can, in most cases, continue to contribute to it by liquidating an under-performing asset like a bank CD. Please call my cell 410-913-7835 or email me at michael.hurley@kofc.org so we can discuss all this further. Vivat Jesus 7
