Monthly Pilgrimage to shrine St. Joseph The Worker 7/16/2017 My Brothers In Christ, I invite you to join myself and the Catholic Men of St, Padre Pio as we make our monthly pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Joseph the Worker in Lowell Massachusetts this Saturday, July 15, 2017. This is a great chance to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, preparing you to approach the Lord through the Sacrament of the Eucharist without the stain of serious sin on your soul. Remember that all men sin and that none of us are worthy on our own to approach the Body and Blood. This is why He has given us the Sacraments in order that we might be saved. ORDO: 9:00AM Carpool Concord area and North IHM parkling lot, 180 Loudon Rd., Conocrd 9:30AM (optional): Breakfast at Theo's Restaurant in Manchester for all interested. 10:30AM: Depart Theo's for the Shrine (we encourage car pooling) 11:00AM: Arrive at Shrine 101:00AM - 12:00PM: Opportunity to make a good Sacramental Confession. The OMI Father's who run the shrine provide 2 confessors at a time from 9AM - 1PM every Saturday. It is their proper mission to the people of the area and they are very good at what they do. You can make your confession face-toface or at a traditional screen. 11:40AM: A group rosary is recited in the main church 12:00PM: Mass 12:45PM: Depart for Manchester 1:15PM: Arrive at Theo's Any particular questions are welcome. Just email me. Jim Preisendorfer bassaholic47@gmail.com ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sound the Alarm Save a Life Red Cross Program 7/17/17 Brothers The Red Cross has a new program to help save lives in our community. This is an ongoing year round program. They are having a national publicity push this fall and targeted events in cities around the country. In NH Manchester was selected. The goal is to prevent the loss of life by installing smoke detectors and helping families with fire evacuation plans if they ever fall victim to a fire. What can your council do? Ask for volunteers to be trained to install the smoke detectors and educate residents on evacuation plans. The Red Cross will supply the smoke detectors. Then promote the program in your parish and your town. You can also if you choose run a fundraiser to increase awareness and help the Red Cross fund the on going costs. This is a great way to increase visibility of your council in your town. Possibly even work with the local Fire Department in your efforts. How to get involved, email Brian Gillis the State Blood Drive Chairman for more information. Nhkofc@gmail.com Vivat Jesus Brian Gillis

Protecting the Name of the Order (7/16/2017) Brothers: As with any enterprise that wants to maintain its individuality and personality it is important to protect those signs, names and symbols that set them apart from all others. This is done through the acquisition of a registration mark from the government in which the entity exists. In the US and most of the western world this is referred to as a trademark, marcus registrad or (enlarged for clarity). You may have noticed that the Emblem of our Order, the names K of C and Knights of Columbus all bear this significant mark. The names and the emblem should always be displayed with the mark. The Fourth Degree and Squires Circle Emblems are similarly registered and protected. This is a signal to all that the use is restricted to the holder of the registration. In our instance the holder is the Supreme Council, not the individual Councils nor the State Council. In short O N L Y the Supreme Council can say who can use those registered items. A blanket permissive use by a Council for a Council/Assembly function only (dinner dance, food drive, degree exemplification and the like) has been granted by Supreme. However, or more to the point HOWEVER, the names or the emblem may not be used in a business enterprise without the explicit written permission of Supreme. Gaming operations by a Council are, by New Hampshire law, a not-forprofit business venture and neither the Emblems of the Order, the names K of C or Knights of Columbus are to be used in identifying the operation of such enterprises with the Order. Gaming operations need to be registered with the Secretary of State and received a license/permit from the lottery agency. The volunteer work by Members of a council at such events may be a Council function, but the organization and operation of the enterprise is not a Council function. Thus Council # is supporting a poker night at (where ever) and Members can, and should identify themselves. The Council cannot register themselves as the operator of the gaming night with the Secretary of State, a separate associated entity can. Once registered with the Secretary of State the Council then becomes, even if only for gaming, a business enterprise regulated by the State. We are a fraternity, a 501(c)8, not a standalone charity under IRS law. There are very significant legal ramification for violating this stricture. We are, however, a charity under the very broad definition of a charity under NH law. If your Council has a gaming operation, immediately file a change of name with the Secretary of State that removes the phrase Knights of Columbus or K of C from the name of the registered enterprise. The name of the separate entity can be Council 123456789 NH Bingo (or whatever), just avoid the registered names or the Emblem of the Order. Set up separate books (a requirement of State law anyway), rules, officers (can be the same a Council Officers), etc. as if a Home Association, for the gaming operation. Keep all finances, records of the gaming operation separate from those of the Council. Do not discuss the business of the separate gaming operation during regular business meetings of the Council. Continue to accept donations from that separate business enterprise into your charitable accounts, but treat them as an outside source of revenue the same as you would proceeds from a dinner dance, not as internal Council funds. Yes, this is a bit of extra work, but it protects the Order from any untoward incidents that may arise. Oh yes, while BINGO is often a trademark of the Catholic Church for fund raising, gaming operations are frowned upon by the Church in general and the diocese in particular.

We need to be about our work of helping people, not having state or federal agencies dictating how or what we do as an Order, that is the bottom line. NO COUNCIL SHOULD HAVE ITSELF REGISTERED WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE! If your Council is otherwise registered with the Secretary of State, unregistered immediately. If a bank says that you have to be registered with the Secretary of State, tell them they are misinformed. Your State Officers can assist you in this educational process. If they will not budge, there are several banks in NH that know the Order very well and who are happy to hold council funds Jordan Ulery State Advocate
