Interview of the Month: Deacon John Deacon John Amlag and wife, Mina Mark: Deacon John, please give us a quick biographical sketch of yourself, when you first settled in Bremerton, your marriage and your family, and your travels from Bremerton to the Big City side of things (and your ordination as Deacon), and back. Deacon John: Bremerton became a home for my family after a 4-year assignment in Olongapo City serving in the naval service in the enlisted ranks. My family came to Bremerton in August of 1986 leaving behind a somewhat tumultuous but peaceful transition of the Philippine government from the dictatorship of then president Marcos to the election of Corazon Aquino as the new Philippine President. We were housed at the old WWII housing in East Bremerton which is now the YMCA before we were transferred to the Navy housing at Jackson Park. While assisting the military chaplain Fr. Brown at Bangor Submarine base, his advice was to find a local parish that would assist with the growing needs of a family. We bought a house in East Bremerton in 1992 and started attending mass at Holy Trinity and registered as parishioners as well. I retired from the Navy in 1994 and became really active in the different ministries of Holy Trinity while working in the Shipyard. In 2003 the question was asked by then Deacon Bob Rupno if anyone was interested in knowing about the Diaconate and if there was any interest in becoming a deacon. I was wondering what a deacon was and encouraged by Fr Jack I started going to the initial interviews for the diaconate and was admitted to the diaconate class in the fall of 2003. The following years were dynamic years of movement because our eldest daughter, Chera, was off to college at the University of Washington, and our second daughter, Joanne, was not far behind from entering college and so were our twin boys, Nick and Aaron. Mina and I decided our family would be better off with all of the family under one roof and we found a house in Bothell. I continued my diaconate formation at the Palisades retreat house while working in the shipyard and assisting with ministries at the St Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Bothell. I finally was ordained a deacon in May of 2009, assisting with outreach ministries and assisting in the RCIA program. I was reassigned to St Pius Parish at Mountlake Terrace in July of 2013 serving the needs of the parish as the Faith Formation Director. When the tenants of our Bremerton house moved out in December of 2016, and with needed repairs of the house, we requested reassignment to Holy Trinity. The transfer request was approved in November of 2017. Mark: How long have you been a Knight, what caused you to want to become one, and what have you enjoyed most, or found most rewarding, about being a Knight? Deacon John: When I was attending college in the University of the Philippines, I was a in a fraternity and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow college students. The Knights offered a nobler purpose and when I joined at St Pius I was only able to go to limited functions because of my hectic schedule with Faith Formation and the daily commute to work from Mountlake Terrace to the Shipyard. With the assistance of the Knights and other Ministries, the online resource Formed.org became a part of the Faith Formation in the Parish, along with the Knights providing the bibles and Catechism for the adult RCIA. 6
Mark: Since returning to the Parish, you ve reestablished your main vocational interest is in Faith Formation. What led you to that ministry and what are some of your hopes and plans in that area? Deacon John: One of my outreach ministries as a Deacon in St Elizabeth Ann Seton in Bothell was doing bible studies as a prison ministry in the City of Everett jail. In the five years of doing jail ministry, I found that the those who attended my bible studies were mostly Christians of other denominations. In over three years of doing the RCIA program and Baptismal Preparation in Mountlake Terrace, most of the sponsors had a lot of misunderstanding about Catholic doctrine. With the advent of online resources, my hope is for parishioners to avail themselves of the richness of the Catholic Faith. Mark: Finally, if you don t mind showing favorites, is there a Saint, or a Christian life, you are particularly inspired by, and why? Deacon John: All the saints are an inspiration to me because each saint in his or her own way, made something very ordinary in their life and transformed that event, thing, or process, to one which is extraordinary and how they did it is very inspiring. Thank you Deacon John, and it s terrific having Mina and you back at Holy Trinity (where, as Father Jack says), you belong. Please join us for the monthly Men s Breakfast on the first Saturday of the month. Deacon John has been giving inspiring presentations afterwards. And if you haven t done so yet, it s time you checked out the FORMED.org website. Holy Trinity has paid for a year s subscription for the whole Parish. (Access Code: PWYKTH) It s an incredible resource for Catholic audio and video materials. Especially during Lent, you might commit yourself to spending some time with it. The subscription runs to September of this year get some use out of it while there s time! From the Formed.org website. Holy Trinity Pilgrimage in October! Deepen your faith by joining Holy Trinity parishioners on a pilgrimage to Italy and/or the Holy Land in October, 2018. Our parishioners Connie and Art Asentista of Bayani Travel have arranged two special pilgrimages for us to enrich our spiritual life and help Holy Trinity Parish in its renovation project. Proceeds from the pilgrimages are being donated to the Capital Campaign Fund. Our pilgrimages will be led by Father Anthony Bernas, aka Father Gege, Chaplain of Naval Base Kitsap and Presider at our Sunday Spanish Mass, who will celebrate Mass each day. Expert guides will help us understand the countries, the history and the features of all the beautiful churches and sites we will visit. In Italy, we will venture to Rome for a visit to St. Peter's Basilica and an audience with Pope Francis. After visiting Rome's four major basilicas, we will travel to the churches dedicated to our beloved saints and where Saints Benedict, Catherine, Francis and Padre Pio lived and prayed. In addition to Rome, we will visit Florence, Assisi, Siena, Lanciano, Monte Sant'Angelo, and San Giovanni Rotondo. You can conclude your pilgrimage in Italy or continue onto the Holy Land to walk where Jesus, Mary and the apostles lived. Pray where Jesus was born, Cana - the site of his first miracle, the Jordan River to renew our Baptismal promises, the site of the Transfiguration, the Mount of Olives, a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, the holy city of Jerusalem and the Old Testament sites of the Jericho, Masada and Qumran where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. Please see the flyers below for more details.
