From Our Pastor, Fr. Jim... The Energy of Children Last Wednesday we had a beautiful celebration of the Feast of Mary s Assumption into Heaven with a special addition of making it our first back to school Mass as well. It was a great success since so many parents made the effort to bring the children and youth for the feast day, as our St. Clare School children merged with our PSR students from other schools along with many of our high school students as well. For those who were not there, when I had the students gather up front for their blessing, I had them look up at the Crucifix and make a quiet prayer to Jesus asking for his help in the new school year. Then I had everyone turn to our statue of St. Mary and pray for her motherly help in the new year as well. We all need the help and prayers of Jesus and Mary, but especially our parents and grandparents who are trying their best to raise their children as Disciples of Jesus. I want to truly thank our parents who make it a priority to have their children at Mass each weekend. And I always ask the parents who are here each Sunday to go out of their way to invite and encourage the inactive parents to come join us and share with them how much the Eucharist helps their family life. I also want to ask our other parishioners to go out of your way to help, encourage and support the young families around us in the pews. Introduce yourself to one another before or after Mass, ask if they need help with an upset child, and/or encourage them with a story of your own raising of children in the faith. And let us all be especially patient with parents who have a child with a disability who is extra challenging for them at Mass. May God bless our children and our parents and grandparents who are making it a priority to teach their children how to be disciples of Jesus. Fr. Jim Deiters P.S. I will be on vacation August 27 Sept 7. I know I was just off for six weeks of sick leave, but I had this vacation planned a year ago, (and the time off for my back was no vacation!) so, thanks for your support and prayers! Oktoberfest is Saturday, September 29 Whether you ve been a member of our parish for days or decades, know that you ve got a part to play in St. Clare s 18th Annual Oktoberfest! Because this is a major fundraiser that helps pay down our building debt, Oktoberfest benefits us all! We re counting on EVERY parish household to get involved by working a shift, donating prizes, buying and selling raffle tickets, and spreading the word about our fun event to neighbors, friends and co-workers. Learn what you can do to help after Masses this weekend, August 25-26, when we kick off our countdown to the best of the Fests St. Clare s Oktoberfest!! Start now to help in a small way: Our popular I Dood It Game needs lots of $5 and $10 gift cards to any store or restaurant. Donate them by placing them in an envelope marked "Oktoberfest I Dood It." Just put the envelope in the collection basket anytime before September 17. Do you have a small business or civic-minded employer? By being a sponsor or donor, you ll promote our parish AND promote your business, and it s tax-deductible, too! RESPECT LIFE CORNER Child and Youth Protection: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (usccb.org) offers many educational resources that address creating safe environments for children, as well as tips for identifying cases of potential child abuse. With children returning to school, they will be introduced to new relationships with adults and caregivers. Educate your children on what an appropriate relationship looks like, encourage them to trust their gut, and, as parents, be accepting and open to hearing and believing them if they ever tell you of a situation that made them feel uncomfortable. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray:. Together, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Protector of Children, our prayers can help to create awareness and opportunities for healing for those who have been abused. Each month, the Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection offers a rosary for the healing of those who have been sexually abused and for the protection of minors. The next rosary will be prayed on Monday, August 27 th at 3pm EST. Consider taking the time out of your day to pray and join in spirit with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Today the prophet Joshua calls for the tribes of Israel to make a decision follow the god of your fathers or the god of the Amorites. Joshua gives us a well-known, often-quoted phrase: As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Can we say that about our household? Do we foster the faith at our dinner tables? Do we encourage our children to pray fervently? Do we call ourselves to serve the God of our fathers? The vocation of every Catholic is a call to holiness. Encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life so our next generation will have leaders to call them to serve the Lord.. The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal using your gifts to serve one another Griffin Center, an agency that receives funding from The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal, provides after-school and summer programs free of charge to 550+ children who live in public housing.
