St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 29, 2013, 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Variations on If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee Georg Böhm Welcome and Call to Worship *Hymn 473 For the Beauty of the Earth dix x *Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson Confession of Sin God, you call us to service in your realm on earth, but we are slow to say Here I am Lord, send me. We want others to serve in our place, and, if we do serve, we prefer the easy jobs. Forgive us, Lord, for the ways in which we attempt to move you to the margins of our lives and for the ways that we consider service in your realm to be of little consequence. Help us to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. (silent confession) Kyrie (Hymnal No. 565) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Words of Forgiveness Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Summary of the Law *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclaiming God s Word David Strutton First Scripture Reading Job 38:1-24 Old Testament, page 458 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Children s Sermon Children ages three years through kindergarten are invited to go to the Children s Chapel at this time. Older children are invited to remain in the sanctuary with their parents.

Anthem How Firm a Foundation arr. Dan Forrest Text: Hymn 361 Second Scripture Reading Job 38:25-41 Old Testament, page 459 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Sermon No Easy Answers Steve Plunkett Responding to God s Word *Affirmation of Faith (unison) from A Declaration of Faith The church is founded on Jesus Christ. Gathered around the Word and sacraments, those who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, together with their children, have formed a corporate, visible body in pilgrimage with God across the centuries. The church has sought to order its life and ministry in obedience to the teaching of the first apostles. It has attempted to carry out Christ s commission in various institutional forms and structures that demonstrate both continuity and change. We acknowledge that Christ chooses to be known in the world through this community of ordinary people, therefore we dare not despise or abandon the church. Christ is the head of the church, therefore we are responsible to Christ when we make policy and decisions in the church. Christ is the foundation of the church, therefore it will not fall despite our weakness. We are confident that the Lord of the church will judge and defeat our sinful intentions and actions, help us in our weakness and blindness, and use the church to accomplish his purposes. Amen. *Hymn 282 If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee wer nur den lieben gott Commissioning of Stephen Leaders Moment for Stephen Ministry David Strutton Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Organ Offertory O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go Robert J. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *Hymn 384 O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go st. margaret *Benediction *Postlude If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee J. S. We are delighted that you have joined us for worship today and pray that you experience the presence of Jesus Christ in our midst. October 6 Is World Communion Sunday The Peacemaking Offering will be received during the 10:50am morning worship service on October 6. The offering envelopes are in the pew racks today and your gift will be used to further peacemaking efforts in Denton, as well as at Grace Presbytery, the Synod of the Sun, and the General Assembly Mission Council levels of the PC(USA). Thank you for giving generously! Children s offering banks are in the Narthex. Visit our Facebook page to see a video of the peacemaking efforts of the PC(USA). Children s Rooms are being Redesigned The dust is flying as the dedicated space for the new children s rooms is under construction. These rooms have been long anticipated, and we re very grateful for the memorial money and anonymous gift that have made the construction possible. Thank you for the generosity of our adults for setting aside this space for the needs of our ministry to children. Rooms under construction are 201, 202, 203 and the library. We invite you to watch the progress as it takes place on the 2nd floor of the educational wing.
