NOVEMBER 2018 SCHOOL NEWLETTER Escuela John Paul I 5675 38 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6L 2Z1 (780)462-6448 Administrative Team Message Dear Parents/Guardians of Escuela John Paul 1: My plans for you are peace says the Lord. Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle, the strength to be forgiving, the patience to be understanding and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding onto what we believe to be right. May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred. We pray for the vision to see and faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence. We pray for a new world where fear shall no longer lead us to commit injustice. Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace. Praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfill the destiny for which we were all created. The destiny as expressed through your words: Love your enemies. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Luke Ch.6 Ver.31 Wow! It is already November. School life has been moving along very quickly, but thankfully, we ve also found some moments to slow down, reflect and pray. These special times take place each morning, regularly in the classrooms and at our school celebrations. We are so thankful to live in a country as blessed and as free as Canada. We can never take our freedoms, our liberties or our democracy for granted. We are forever indebted to the countless brave men and women who have served in Canada s armed forces, many of whom have lost their life in battle. Today, we also keep in our prayers current members of our nation s military who are serving overseas and who are away from their families. It is important that school children understand the sacrifices military personnel make, the rich history in which their legacy is rooted, and the mission and values under which they serve. This Remembrance Day we remember and honour those who gave their life in war, those who survived, and those who still serve today. We ask our heavenly Father to bless them, hold them, and make his graces known unto them. Yours truly, on behalf of staff, T. Peterson G. Antipán Principal/Directora Assistant Principal/Subdirectora
A Prayer of Remembrance Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day; fulfill in them the purpose of your love, and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Remembrance Day Celebration We invite our families to join us in celebration on Friday, November 9 th at 10:30am in our school gym. We remind you that there will be no school on Monday, November 12 th in honour of Remembrance Day. We re Blogging! We ve jumped aboard the blogging train at JPI, all in the hopes of continuing to broaden the lines of communication between school and home. We are so proud of the work that our students and teachers are always doing, and we aspire to let you know about all these initiatives as they are happening, rather than waiting for a monthly newsletter. In addition, we will explore the necessity of a monthly newsletter now that we have taken the blogging route. The link to access the site is below, and you can set it up to receive alerts whenever something new has been added. We welcome your feedback as we explore this alternative form of communication! https://johnpaulica.wordpress.com/ JPI Day October 17 th marked the birthdate of our namesake, Pope John Paul I. We celebrated by learning about his life and legacy. We also used this opportunity to have our first ever Faith Day at JP1, which we connected to our theme this year: Walking Together in God s Love. All students from 100V-Grade 6 were able to participate in various sessions, with a variety of leaders in our school and religious community.
Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead / All Saints Day Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) was celebrated at JPI on November 1 & 2. We were so honoured to have Mrs. Raquel Aviles and Mr. Abdel Rassi lead our sessions on the meaning of this tradition. In addition, we had McKernan School join us in the festivities! Punctuality & Supervision Ensuring that your child arrives to school on time offers them the best opportunity for success! Supervision of students begins at 8:10 am. Please drop off your children between 8:10 and 8:20 am. This will allow them to arrive by the first bell at 8:25 am and to have the opportunity to settle in with their classmates at the start of the day. Instruction starts at 8:30 am with a school-wide prayer and announcements. Students arriving after 8:30 am are considered late and must sign in at the office before going to class. THANK YOU! JPI School Advisory Council The next meeting will take place on November 14, 2018 @5:30pm. Hope to see you there! November 4 Catholic Education Sunday Edmonton Catholic Schools is proud to have provided outstanding Catholic education to the families of Edmonton for 130 years. Each year, Catholics all over the world set aside a special day of worship to give thanks and to celebrate the gift of Catholic education. We are very blessed to be a part of this 130 year journey! Administration of Medication If your child has a condition requiring medication it is imperative that supporting paperwork be completed. School Board policy requires that the doctor and at least one parent sign a form indicating the nature of the medical condition and drug dispensing requirements for those students taking regular medication at school and for those who may require emergency medications administered.
Transportation / Bus passes A reminder that bussing fees need to be paid during the first week of each month. All bus route information can now be found by logging into PowerSchool. Routes and times can change without notice, so it is a good idea to check this information regularly. Cold weather As it always happens, the cold weather is sneaking up on us very quickly. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing for the weather. In the morning, students are expected to wait outside until the bell rings at 8:21am. As a reminder, supervision of students outside in the mornings begins at 8:06am. During extremely cold days (below - 20 C) or on rainy days students will be asked to come inside the school where they will be supervised in the hallways.
