Blessing and Grand Opening We will be blessing the parish convent house for the Sisters next Saturday, September 1st, after the 5 p.m. Mass, followed by a Knights of Columbussponsored barbeque dinner. Although we are deeply saddened by the reports of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury and the cases involving Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the retired archbishop of Washington, D.C., we have reasons to rejoice and be grateful to God here at St. Francis Parish. It has been an incredible journey for us, where God has surprised us every step of the way, and now we are realizing another one of our dreams. Your generosity has been amazing in furnishing the convent house, and the Sisters are already working hard in the classrooms, getting them ready for the new school year. I never imagined all these things could happen so quickly. It was less than a year ago that Bishop Liam and I started our search for a few nuns who would come to help us in our school in educating our young people. In the meantime, our debt came down from $2.6 million to under $500,000. Once the Sisters confirmed their intention to join our efforts, we looked at building a house for them. We then broke ground on May 27th and, ever since, the construction moved ahead quickly under the amazing leadership of Dennis Murphy of Hayden Homes. His generosity in sharing his time, talents, and resources have brought us to where we are today in providing a house for the nuns. Huge thanks go to Dennis Murphy, Steve Klingman, Parr Lumber, the House Construction Committee, and all those who have assisted us in fulfilling another dream. I hope as many of you as possible will join us for the blessing and grand opening of the house on Saturday, September 1st. Back to School... and Mary sat at the Lord s feet listening to what He said (Lk. 10:39). I ll be taking some time away from parish activities to sit at the feet of the Lord and listen. Members of the clergy who have worked in the diocese for 10 years are encouraged to take three months away for continuing education. With the approval of our bishop, I will be spending an entire month at the North American College in Rome, starting September 2nd. I am very excited about this opportunity and looking forward to it. I will be attending the one-month course offered by North American College on Saint Paul, with one week of my course spent making his missionary journey in Cyprus. My course will also include celebrating Masses at St. Peter s and St. Paul s and a general audience with Pope Francis. I promise to remember each of you while I am celebrating the Masses there, and I ask for your prayers while I m away. You will be in my thoughts and daily prayers. I will also be going to St. Mary s University in Baltimore for two weeks in November as part of my continuing education. A Spanish immersion in Mexico next year will complete three months of my continuing education program. Thanks for your understanding and patience while I am away. I m sure you will all behave, and the church will still be standing when I return. I expect to be back October 5th. Fr. Victor will take care of all necessary things in my absence. And while he is away on vacation the second part of September, Fr. Joseph Pallithazath one of my cousins will be here. I am sure you will be nice to him. Fr. Jose Thomas

To be listed in this Parish Bulle n, call before 1 p.m. on Fridays eight (8) days prior to the next publica on. Beginning this Monday, August 27th, the 7 a.m. Mass on weekdays (Monday through Friday) will be in the St. Clare Chapel at the 27th St. Church. It will be followed by Adora on in the Chapel un l noon. The 12:15 p.m. Mass on all weekdays will s ll be at the Historic Church, followed by Adora on un l 6 p.m. This change is to provide an opportunity to school students and parents to a end Mass before school starts and to make it easier for the Sisters to go to Mass and then get to their classrooms in me. Moreover, I believe there is a great need for Mass and Adora on every day at both churches. Having Adora on every day where the school is located is hugely important to what we are trying to accomplish for the school, and it is going to bring many blessings upon the school staff, students, and parents. Thanks for your understanding and for being a blessing to St. Francis.

Bible Study Starts Tuesday September 11th For this fall, we have two comprehensive Bible Studies to be held at three different times! The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation, starts over from the beginning, as many of you requested. This acclaimed study by Jeff Cavins helps you learn the overarching story of God s plan of salvation, and gives you an understanding of how people, places, events, and themes of Scripture fit together. This course is perfect for those who have never studied the Bible, recent converts to Catholicism, and Bible-study veterans. The focus is on 14 narrative books of the Bible. Format: Read Bible at home; 50-minute DVD in class; brief discussion. Term: Eight (8) consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th through October 30th. Time: Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in the RCIA Room across from the St. Clare Chapel (facilitated by Diana Stein & Vergie Ries). OR: Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (facilitated by Ken Magnan). Attend one or the other. Registration: Simply show up for class on September 11th! Materials Required: Same text for three seasonal, eight-session courses. Call Ascension Press at 1-800-376-0520, Ext. 1341, and ask for The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation Study Set (for participants/facilitators; contains timeline) $34.95. Questions? Call Vergie Ries at (541) 797-6322. New Study: Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance. This study, facilitated by Molly Valenti, is a natural complement to Bible Timeline. A great inheritance awaits us as sons and daughters, adopted fully into the family of God. Paul s letter to the Ephesians reveals many remarkable gifts we Christians receive through the Church. It conveys the nature of the Church a body, a household, a mystery, a communion, a bride, an army. It reveals how God s great love can transform our lives if we choose. Time: Tuesday afternoons 1 to 2:30 p.m., in the RCIA Room across from the St. Clare Chapel. Format, Term, Registration, Questions: Same as above. Materials Recommended: Call Ascension Press at 1-800-376-0520, Ext. 1341; ask for Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance (for participants/facilitators) $20.

ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Convent House Blessing Latin Mass All are invited to join us for the blessing of the new convent house on Saturday, September 1st, after the 5 p.m. Mass. Jose Thomas Pray for Vocations Join us for the next Holy Hour on Tuesday, September 4th, at 11 a.m., at the St. Clare Chapel, to pray for Vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We have an amazing group of people who make this Holy Hour for vocations on the 1st Tuesday of every month. The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. (Lk. 10:2) RCIA Registration Is Under Way Do you know someone who s never been baptized? Baptized in another religion? Baptized Catholic and never confirmed? Just curious? We meet every Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning on September 6th. For more information, please contact Daniel Beougher at rcia@stfrancisbend.org. Attention Liturgical Ministers! Please plan to attend one of the two REQUIRED Training and Update sessions listed below for Liturgical Ministers (acolytes, extraordinary ministers of Communion, lectors and sacristans). There are important changes you need to know about. This training will be a quick review of changes and a time to answer questions. There will also be a spiritual component.
