Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Erected in 1936, the entire structure reflects the architectural style developed by missionaries, combining the building patterns of the Pueblo Indians with Spanish-Colonial design. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We re reading St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and selfindulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. Thank You! Whole Community Faith Sharing Reflection: Mark's gospel describes the work that Jesus does. His day begins and ends by taking care of others and their needs. He heals, drives out demons and comforts the oppressed and discouraged. Crowds follow him wherever he goes, even when he tries to disappear for some time alone to pray and renew himself. Jesus obviously desired some time to himself, but without complaint he returns to his mission and continues to heal, preach, and comfort. This is truly remarkable when we think of times when we feel too busy, tired, or overwhelmed. Question: Jesus knew that his mission was for everyone, not just one village or group. How can I reach out to others (those outside my friends and family) and offer them hope and Good News? Faith Response: When I hear of people who are sick, lonely, and discouraged I will follow the example of Jesus and respond with all the gifts that God has given me...even though I may be exhausted.

Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel There is a tradition which may not be historica that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel s call to prayer and penance a call that Mary models in a splendid way. Hope for Troubled Marriages Retrouvaille (REH-tro-v-eye) is a peer marriage ministry program that has helped thousands of married couples who are experiencing disillusion or misery in their marriage, even separated or divorced, rediscover a loving marriage relationship.
