FROM FATHER DOUG S DESK Goat for Dinner On Monday, the Animal Protective League came to check on the Zoe, the goat. A woman called to say that the goat was outside in the cold and was being mistreated. Actually, this was the fourth time that the woman had called the APL to complain. The first was on or around December 21. As I recall the high was 64 degrees that day. On that day she said the goat was being neglected by not being fed or given water. Of course, this was completely untrue. When the APL came out the first time, they saw the goat and the care she was getting. They agreed that Zoe was being taken care of very well. A week later, a policeman appeared at the rectory and said the first district had received a complaint about the goat being neglected. Again we showed him the goat and all was well. Apparently this woman called the APL a third time while I was on retreat to accuse the parish of goat neglect. This could have been handled easily just by calling and asking if the goat was being cared for. I admit, I was jealous of the goat! That was the fattest goat I have ever seen. I think she gained five pounds while I was gone. On weekends at Mass people would ask, How is the goat? not how are you, Fr. Doug? David Velcio has done a fine job caring for the goat. When I googled do goats like the cold weather, the answer was yes. Their fur grows very thick in the winter and they are warm in temperatures up to 15 degrees below zero. And that is outside, without a shelter. This brings us back to last Monday. The APL showed up again for a fourth time, this time with WOIO TV cameras. Perhaps you saw the story on the news at 9pm. The same woman had called to complain. The TV story said the goat was living in a dog type cage. Then they showed Zoe the goat poking her head through the chain-linked fenced gate to the community garden. It was not a picture of her goat house. The report continued with innuendo and misinformation. At the end of the story, the reporter calls Zoe, Billie Jean instead of Zoe. The woman is shown giving the goat a hug. Even shoddy reporting would have gone through the 5 W s: Who owns the goat? Why is it there? What care is it getting? When did it come and when is the goat fed and watered? What is its name? Where is it housed? The lesson here for us all is twofold; not to make judgements and probably not to watch WOIO19 news ever again. This reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw recently. It said, Welcome to America. Learn to speak English. The assumption was that people who come to America don t want to learn English. That is a judgement that is so untrue. Every immigrant knows that if you want to make it here, you have to learn English. It s the American way. So be careful when people try to cloud your opinions with misleading statements. On an unrelated yet related lighter note, a young couple invited their aging pastor over for dinner. While the couple were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their young son what they were having for dinner. Goat replied the boy. Goat? questioned the startled cleric. Are you sure about that? Yep said the youngster. I heard my dad say to my mom, Might as well have the old goat for dinner today as any other day. Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers. Can you volunteer 1 hour, 1 day a week? Call Georgann at 216-251-6255 if you can help. PASTORALTEAM 2166715890 Rev.
