June 17, 2018 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Parish News Q. How are we ever going to pay off the $500,000.00 debt for the re-building of the Church and Academy? A. I have great faith in God, great devotion to St. Joseph (into whose hands we have placed this project) and great admiration for the people of St. Kevin parish and the Academy parents. You love your parish and your Academy. That has been demonstrated for over 90 years! So it will be through a combination of things that we will do what we need to do: 1) Finish our pledges to Generations of Faith ; 2) Finish our pledges to Rebuilding St. Kevin ; 3) Seek new donations (large or small); 4) Continuous Fund Raising Projects (with the leadership of the Fundraising Committee); 5) Lots of prayer, faith and trust! Thank you for all you have done and continue to do! Father Jose Diaz Mass and Dinner Reception Father Jose Diaz will be ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop DiMarzio on Saturday, June 30th, at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Brooklyn. Vocation Awareness Vocation Thought We walk by faith and not by sight. Faithfulness to one s vocation is essential to holiness. Is your vocation calling you to be a priest, deacon, sister or brother? If the Lord is truly calling you, what is needed is trust. To help in your discernment, you are invited to call the rectory (718-357-8888) and speak with one of the parish priests or you can call the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454. A Word from Father Robert Mema Last Sunday in my homily I referenced the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin s Guide for the Assembly. Many parishioners have asked for more informa on regarding this work. Cardinal Bernardin wrote this guide while he was the Archbishop of Chicago. With the central theme of my homily being par cipa on, Cardinal Bernardin clearly lays out his understanding that the Catholic llturgy is the spirit and the force of the Chris an life. He gives us an insight as to how our par cipa on at Mass can influence our missionary efforts. This guide is not only helpful to parish staff, liturgical commi ees, ministries, organiza ons, but also for the parishioners. When we let the liturgy shape us - from the ashes of Lent and the waters of bap sm to the broken bread and poured-out cup at every Sunday s Mass - then we shall find what it is to put on Christ, ( Guide for the Assembly, pg. 4).

June 17, 2018 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 8 Important Announcements For those leaders of organizations who have submitted their space and time request forms, your requests have been received, entered into the parish calendar, and an email has been sent confirming your requests. To those who have not submitted the request forms, please make sure they are in no later than MONDAY, JUNE 18. The parish and academy staff will be meeting to prepare for the upcoming pastoral and academic year. Thank you, Fr. Robert Mema Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of God s kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christ s disciples has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout the world. Good stewards go about God s business of planting seeds among all those whom they encounter. What will we do this week to add to God s kingdom? Proper Summer Attire Summer is here and with it, hot weather. This usually means a different form of dress. Casual and light is the order of the day. However, we ask everyone to consider what exactly is appropriate for Sunday Mass. Sunday Mass is a sacred event. We gather in a special place (air conditioned), in the presence of God and one another, to do the most sacred thing we can do offer the Sacrifice of Christ to the Father. Certainly, such an event calls for the greatest degree of reverence and our attitude, shown in our dress, should be one of profound respect. How would you go to a family member s July wedding? Sunday Mass is far more significant. Shorts, cut-off jeans, tank tops, athletic shirts/shorts and the like are not appropriate. Please, before setting out to church, ask yourself: does what I am wearing show respect for where I am going and tell everyone how I feel about this sacred action?
