Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Rabbi Nisan Andrews According to Rabbinic tradition, the entire episode involving Yaakov (Jacob) and Esav (Esau) found at the beginning of this week's parsha (reading) forms a template or prototype for all future confrontations between Jews and the other nations. The Gemorrah reports that for precisely this reason, Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi (Rabbi Judah the Prince), would study this parsha prior to meeting with the local Roman officials. In fact, we are told, that the one time Rabbi Yehuda neglected his study of Parshat Vayishlach, was the one time he was unsuccessful in defending the Jewish people under the rule of the Roman empire. Rabbi Isaac Berstein (ZTz"L) writes that our recognition of these opening verses as a symbolic pre-enactment of our national history should lead us to read them with higher sensitivity and deeper insight. As Yaakov, returning from Lavan's (Laban) home hears of Esav's approach, sends him presents along with a communication: "Thus says your servant Jacob: I stayed with Laban and remained until now". Rashi remarks: "Another explanation: the word 'garti (I have dwelt)' has the numerical value of 613 - it is as much as to say, Though I have sojourned with Laban, the wicked, I have observed the 613 Divine Commandments, and I have learned nought of his evil ways". Esav was convinced that after 20 years in the house of Lavan, Yaakov would have lost his Judaism and shed his customs and identity. Thus, thought Esav, he and Yaakov could walk hand in hand and face the world jointly. Yaakov, therefore, felt it important to share with his brother that he had in no way surrendered one bit of his religious commitment. This should inform our reality as well. Just as Yaakov in Lavan's home, in the face of adversity, challenge, hardship and opposition, continued to serve Hashem with faith, commitment and joy, so too, must we. We must be able to face Esav at any moment to say "Im Lavan garti v'tariag mitzvot shamarti (I have sojourned with Laban, I have observed the 613 Divine Commandments). Reconciliation and Dialogue Our Parasha presents the fraught reconciliation between Yaakov and Eisav after two decades of separation as he served Laban. Midrashim add another 14 years when he studied Torah in the academy of Shem and Ever. The Parasha opens with Yaakov s apprehension, details the moment they come together with dots over the letters of the word וישקהו (Bereshit 33:4) indicative that the embracing kiss might have been more of a bite, and then Yaakov s rejection of the suggestion that they travel onwards together. Mostly the commentators affirm Yaakov s decision; what Tzaddik in his right mind would partner up with an Eisav? However, Rashi, in his commentary, quotes a Midrash that Yaakov hid his daughter Dinah from Eisav in a chest (Eisav notes the wives and sons but no daughter). Says Rashi, Yaakov might have made a match for her and Eisav (or his sons). There was an opportunity to bring him back to the proper path. Not only was the opportunity missed, but Dinah, too, suffered, was abducted and violated. With all we know of Eisav, Edom, Amalek one wonders at what might have been. Did Rashi really imagine another course? This Wednesday, I was privileged to attend the Chief Rabbi s In Good Faith initiative at Lambeth Palace with the Most Reverend Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The day opened with a keynote address by Rabbi David Rosen, former Chief Rabbi of Ireland and one of the architects of modern interfaith dialogue. He presented the post-shoah transformation of Church attitudes to the Jewish people as one of the most positive aboutturns in human history. Rabbi Rosen stressed that dialogue and bridge building is very much the domain of Jewish Orthodoxy. He cited Rabbi Jacob Emden (The Yaavetz d.1776 Hamburg) who posited that Christianity was a vehicle for the promulgation of Jewish (Noachide) values teaching in the world. Rabbi Rosen was anxious to convey the significance of the established Bilateral Commissions between the Israeli Chief Rabbinate and the Vatican as well as the more recent Bilateral Commission between the Israeli Chief Rabbinate and the Anglican Communion. In 2017 the Israeli Chief Rabbinate, the Conference of European Rabbis and the Rabbinic Council of America published a paper Between Jerusalem and Rome which set out a Jewish position on dialogue and relations with Catholicism in which it notes We call upon the Church to join us in deepening our combat against our generation's new barbarism, namely the radical offshoots of Islam, which endanger our global society and does not spare the very numerous moderate Muslims. It threatens world peace in general and the Christian and Jewish communities in particular. We call on all people of good will to join forces to fight this evil. Despite profound theological differences, Catholics and Jews share common beliefs in the Divine origin of the Torah and in an ultimate redemption, and now, also, in the affirmation that religions must use moral behaviour and religious education not war, coercion, or social pressure to influence and inspire. The highlight of the day was the Chief Rabbi in conversation with the Archbishop, each offering inspiration from a text and a prayer. The Chief Rabbi ה נ ה מ ה- in גם spoke of the (Tehillim.(133 It is often. ט וב, ומ ה-נ ע ים ש ב ת א ח ים ג ם- י ח ד absent in translation Behold, how good and how גם pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity! The means also. When brothers engage, something else is in the room a Presence of Hashem. Or perhaps גם there is another formulation of the equation Only when Hashem is in the room can we sit down to good and pleasant results. Though our journey has seen us as vulnerable and victim, we are in a position to script a new narrative of respect and common interest (without compromising Torah or national integrity). Buber wrote, We share a book and a hope, that is no small thing. The גם is no small thing. It is ability to look past differences and witness in mankind, the Presence of Hashem. Shabbat Shalom R Jeremy Lawrence

THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The Haftorah for Parshat Vayishlach comes to us from the sefer (book) of Ovadyah (Obadiah). Ovdayah is the shortest sefer to be found in Tanach (the Bible), and its one chapter of 21 psukim is read in its entirety this Shabbat. Chaza l (our sages) teach that the prophet Ovadyah was the same Ovadyah mentioned in Sefer Malachim (Book of Kings) who converted to Judaism and served in the court of Achav (Ahab) and Ezevel (Jezebel), the king and queen of Israel. He was born an Edomi (Edomite), a nation descending from Esav (Esau), and his prophecy is mainly concerned with his former people. We are not told explicitly why in his nevua (prophesy) the Edomites would be singled out for this forecasted fate. However, it is presumable that this nation, located south of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), took advantage of an already subjugated nation of Israel. As a result, Ovadyah predicts that the Edomites would suffer significantly in punishment for their cruelty. In several places Ovadyah refers to the forebears of both groups, emphasising that Esav s descendants, the Edomites, will be thoroughly beaten by the Jews who were descendants of Yaakov (Jacob). He says, The House of Jacob shall be fire, And the House of Joseph flame And the House of Esau shall be straw; They shall burn it and devour it, And no survivor shall be left of the House of Esau for the LORD has spoken. (1:18) We in the twenty-first century have not seen the nation of Esav in many years, but, Ovadyah s message applies in many ways to the non-jews of our times. The prophet declares that Jews have a particular role in the world, that of proclaiming God s presence and rule. Esav s and his descendants refusal to accept Yaakov s (and, by extension, the Jews ) exceptionalism and celebration of every time the Jews suffered, leads directly to his eventual destruction. If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello! I can usually be found there during the regular office hours (except Thursday).
