the 4th day newsletter May 12, 2015 A MESSAGE FROM WALK #170 LAY DIRECTOR Hello! My name is Truman Hornsby and I have been asked to be the Lay Director for Walk # 170. To give you some background on me. I was originally on Walk # 37. Sometimes I get confused and say Walk # 38, which causes a lot of giggles because that was a Woman s walk. So it is important to know your Walk number. When I went on Walk # 37, I have to say it was because of a woman. I wanted to see what made Emmaus so special to this person. I knew that she shared something with others that I had not shared and she was so very happy with who she was in Christ, so she asked me about the Walk to Emmaus and I wanted to go. I had been a Christian for many years and thought that there was not much for me to learn, but I was surprised. I learned so much in just three (3) short days. I felt as though I were walking with Jesus himself. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit and was able to make peace with a past that I did not know I needed to make peace with. I learned more about myself and my spiritual journey in three (3) days than I could have learned in a lifetime. I have to say that it was a journey special for me because I found a new fire in my gut for serving the Lord. I also found friends that I could share this life s journey with in my fellow Emmaus Brothers. Some of these brothers and I share in a Reunion Group which helps me maintain my focus. I also found other areas of service to the Lord that took me out of my comfort zone but showed me that God still had plans for me. The lady who sponsored me often quoted Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, to provide you a hope and a future and not to harm you This too has become my special verse to help me when I am not sure where the future leads. The person who sponsored me became my wife and she has shared the Emmaus experience many times with me and others. If it had not been for the Emmaus Walk, I may have never been able to face some of the things that have happened to me and to know that whatever happens, there is a community of faithful people there for you that show you Agape love. My hope for these pilgrims for Walk # 170 is that they get as much from their walks as I did from mine and that the Holy Spirit walks with them during these three days. That they see the face of Jesus from the time they enter the Camp on Wednesday until they leave on Saturday. Because the face of Jesus is in each of you who come back and serve at Emmaus! De Colores! A MESSAGE FROM WALK #170 SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR 2015 Walk Dates I enjoy the mountains. I have seen the tree covered mountains of the Smokies, the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have enjoyed the snow covered Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming and Canada. I have been filled with wonder and awe at the splendor of Mt. McKinley and Mt. Ranier. Life is full of mountain and valley experiences. I have heard it said that everyone is either heading into a valley, is in the valley, or is coming out of a valley. As we mature as Christians, we continue to have mountain top experiences but the valleys aren t as deep. I know that Walk 170 will be a mountain top experience for the pilgrims and also for all of us participating in the conference room and background support. My God use this experience to draw all of us closer to Him and encourage through our Fourth days as we travel the hills and valleys with Him. Blessings! Neil Epler Spiritual Director Walk 170 I love this time of year! The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing. Spring is here! 1 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that in Christ we are new creations! The Walk to Emmaus reminds us of this too doesn t it? We come on the walk as new pilgrims and leave renewed and refreshed ready to go back to our churches and serve the body of Christ. As you know, the purpose of Emmaus is to develop leaders in the local church. I am so encouraged when I hear from new pilgrims about how they have gone back to their churches and are working in ministry, teaching Sunday School classes, leading outreach projects, etc. We are in need of pilgrim applications especially for the Men s walks. Is there a leader or potential leader in your church that you would prayerfully consider sponsoring on a Walk? If so, I would encourage you to do so. Also, we are in need of workers to come back and assist in the Support Team areas on the upcoming walks. If you haven t been back and worked in a while, I encourage you to do come back and help. I look forward to seeing you soon!
