ATTENTION LECTORS...You are asked to stop at the Parish Office and pick up your 2017 liturgical year lector workbook. St Charles Thanksgiving Day Mass is a fortyyear parish tradition. Our word Eucharist is the Greek word for thanksgiving. What could be more fitting than to begin our national holiday of giving thanks than to attend Holy Mass the greatest prayer of thanksgiving? In the early years of the Church, gifts of clothing, food, and money were brought forward, along with the gifts of bread and wine. That demonstrated the close connection that must exist between our worship and our service to others. That s also where the practice of the priest washing his hands at Mass began; his hands were soiled after accepting those many gifts. At our Thanksgiving Day Mass, we follow the ancient practice and ask the congregation to bring forward canned goods. That also concludes our November Canned Food Drive. (Please check the Canned Food Drive article in this bulletin for most-needed items.) Plan now to attend St Charles Thanksgiving Day Mass, Thursday, November 24, at 9:30am. The Catholic Parishes of Parma and Parma Heights will sponsor their Second Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner, November 24, at St John Bosco Bell Tower Hall. This meal is for those who would otherwise be alone or those who are in need. We offer two seatings: 12Noon or 1:00pm. Check the article in this bulletin for details and share this information with those who might benefit. Please call our Parish Office (440-884-3030) with the number attending by this Monday, November 14. This year Advent is as long as it possibly can be: a full four weeks. There have been Christmas items in some stores since late August and Christmas commercials are popping up on television. As you plan your shopping, please remember to use St Charles Gift Certificates. We carry dozens of gift cards for retail, discount, groceries, restaurants, fast foods, entertainment, and services. Just stop by the Parish Office. We make a few cents on the dollar, but that quickly adds up if everyone helps out. Do your shopping with our gift certificates and give them as gifts. All proceeds benefit the children of St Charles Parish. A few weeks back, I mentioned planting several trees along Wilber Avenue including the area around our new Mercy Shrine. After consultation with landscapers, we selected twenty trees: Ivory Silk Lilacs and single stem columnar Serviceberries. Those trees were planted last week. The cost per tree was $375. Each tree is six to seven feet tall. All I ve heard are compliments and just wait till spring 2017! We still have a few trees not spoken for. If you would like to donate a tree in memory of a loved one or in a living person s name -- please call the Parish Office this week at 440-884-3030. We would like to have all the details tidied up by the end of the month. The Mercy Shrine Dedication is scheduled for dedication next Sunday, November 20. Looking for a special gift? Check the article in this bulletin about St Charles Spiritwear: jackets, polos, rugby, blankets, bags, etc. are all available. Yep, even in my sizes! Thank you to those who were so generous last month in donating greeting cards to our new Dismas Ministry. Thousands of cards were received. Those in jail and in prison were grateful for the kind words. When you care for the confined, you care for me, says the Lord.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 13, 2016 The Mercy Shrine Article 2 of 2 In the bulletin last week there was an article on the historical roots of the Cross that will adorn the new shrine, as well as some of the factors that led to a St. Charles Mercy Shrine. In this article I hope to provide two very short meditations on the central piece of art: The Unity Cross of Jesus and Mary. 1) One of the many titles for Mary is, Model of the Church. This means that each member of the Church should imitate Mary s way of relating to God. So how did Mary relate to God? The Unity Cross depicts this beautifully. Mary doesn't attempt to earn God s love through hard work or hiding her needs. Mary also does not grasp at His love and grace as if she could get it if she just tried harder. Instead, Mary, our model, puts herself in a position of trustfilled receptivity to the love and grace of God poured out at the Cross of Jesus. In a culture that more and more defines the human person based upon productivity or ability, Mary stubbornly reveals that man s greatest ability is to receive the gift of God, to allow that gift of divine life to grow in us, and then to give that gift generously to the world. May Mary s witness at the foot of the Cross, the place of God s love poured out, remind us that we must be receptive to God, if we are to bear great fruit (Jn 15). 2) The location of this Shrine is very intentional. While things like personal prayer and devotion to the Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy are necessary for growth in the Christian life, these private devotions are meant to draw us to Jesus in the sacraments. The sacraments are the heart of the Church. The sacraments are where Jesus, in 2016, is alive and active.

St. Charles Borromeo Church November 13, 2016 The greatest of the sacraments is the Eucharist, which we celebrate and receive every Sunday. Through the sacraments the life and love that is in Jesus enters into our life. Therefore, this shrine is meant to remind you that in the Church building you are about to enter, God is alive and active, in the sacraments. Then, as you leave the Church and face the world, the shrine is meant to remind you of Jesus attitude towards the world, an attitude of merciful love. I hope these brief reflections fill you with gratitude for this Year of Mercy, and above all help you receive God s mercy for you. One brief reminder about the dedication of the shrine - on Sunday, November 20 th at the 12:00 pm Mass, the shrine will be blessed. That Sunday is the celebration of Christ the King, and the closing of the Year of Mercy. We hope to see you and your families at the shrine to celebrate with us. May the Lord s mercy set you free. The FEST is partnering with Alpha in a Catholic Contest to provide this great Advent Night of worship and reflection for our region!
