PRELUDE Trio HOPE CHURCH ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER August 9, 2015 ~ 10:00 AM THE APPROACH TO GOD F. Mendelssohn WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Red #535 The Lord Be with You DOMINUS VOBISCUM VOTUM AND SENTENCES Our help is in the name of the LORD who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8 Amen. Let us be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven us. Therefore let us be imitators of God, as beloved children and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us. Ephesians 4:32; 5:1 *PROCESSIONAL HYMN Red #534 All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly *SALUTATION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy) Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison, Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison, Kyrie Eleison with these people, in these moments, Gentle God, because we hope our self-righteous anger might become passionate justice for others. with these people, in these moments, Christ our Bread, because we hope our complacency with half-lies might become a hunger for your truth. *Congregation standing as able Bold type indicates congregational response 3 HOLY MANNA BRUMM

with these people, in these moments, Gifting Spirit, because we hope our fumbling, faltering words might be transfigured into good news to others. with these people, in these moments, God, Christ, and Spirit, confessing to you the ways we need to be changed so that we can become more like you. repeat Kyrie as on previous page WORDS OF ASSURANCE AND GOD S GUIDE TO GRATEFUL LIVING *RESPONSE Red #728 People of the Lord JENNY VANTSCHEGG *THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. WORD WITH THE CHILDREN Children ages 3 through grade 2 leave for Summer Church School THE WORD OF GOD IN PROCLAMATION AND SACRAMENT PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a p. 248 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 130 4

In deep despair I cry to you Lord, hear my voice, my prayer. If you should mark iniquities, who would stand guiltless there? But, Lord, with you forgiveness dwells and love beyond compare. The soundless whisper of your voice, your hovering presence near, for these my longing spirit waits as for the morning clear, as those who watch throughout the night till morning shall appear. Because your love is steadfast, Lord, on you our hope relies; You will redeem your Israel from all iniquities and turn to songs of thanks and praise our sorrow and our sighs. THE EPISTLE LESSON Ephesians 4:1-16 p. 951 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL LESSON John 6:24-35 p. 867 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Toward a Fierce Commitment PRAYER FOR BLESSING ~ silent meditation *CONFESSION OF FAITH from the Belhar Confession 1986, South Africa We believe in the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who gathers, protects and cares for the Church by Word and Spirit, as God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in one holy, universal Christian Church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe that God has entrusted to the Church the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ; that the Church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world; that the Church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker; that the Church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells. We believe that the Church must witness against and strive against any form of injustice, so that justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Jesus is Lord. To the one and only God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be the honor and the glory for ever and ever. 5

LIFE OF HOPE OFFERING Please sign and pass the Fellowship Pad, and pass it back. Offertory Anthem Speak, O Lord Speak, O Lord, as we come to You To receive the food of Your Holy Word. Take Your truth, plant it deep in us; Shape and fashion us in Your likeness, That the light of Christ might be seen today In our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us All Your purposes for Your glory. Keith Getty Teach us, Lord, full obedience, Holy reverence, true humility; Test our thoughts and our attitudes In the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see Your majestic love and authority. Words of pow'r that can never fail- Let their truth prevail over unbelief. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us- Truths unchanged from the dawn of time That will echo down through eternity. And by grace we'll stand on Your promises, And by faith we'll walk as You walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built And the earth is filled with Your glory. *Doxology Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; *Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost, Amen. *or praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread of life, broken to reach and heal the wounds of human pain. Where we divide your people you are waiting there on bended knee to wash our feet with endless care. Lord Jesus Christ, you are the wine of peace, poured into hearts once broken and where dryness sleeps. Where we are tired and weary you are waiting there to be the way which beckons us beyond despair. Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to your feast, at which the rich and powerful have become the least. Where we survive on others in our human greed you walk among us begging for your every need. Words and music by Bernadette Farrell 1990, 2000. OCP.
