Greetings Friends, Grace and peace to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our March calendar convinces me that it will be a spiritfilled month as we prepare ourselves for Easter hope and new life. This year during Lent, we will meet at 6 pm every Thursday evening from February 22 until April 5 for a soup supper and Lenten study with the book 24 Hours that Changed the World, by the Rev. Adam Hamilton. Since the book s last chapter is a celebration of resurrection, our last session will fall on the first Thursday after Easter. The study includes a DVD which will take us back to the last days of Jesus in the world. In addition, please mark your calendars now and plan to be here on March 29 for our Maundy Thursday service at 5 pm, and at -7 pm on March 30 for our Good Friday service. At 7 am on April 1, join us for an Easter Sunrise Service as well as our Easter Service at 11 am that day. During the 11 am service, we will celebrate a baptism and welcome six new members to our church! As they begin their faith journey as members of the church, please keep them in your prayers and nurture them with your love. Blessings upon you as you continue to reflect, repent, and renew your commitment to follow our Lord on the journey to Easter hope and new life! In Grace, Rev. Sixty Plus Fellowship We started our time together, joining hands, as Bob Denham led us in prayer. He prayed for all those who are ill and for the Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Birthday people for the month of February are Del Schmidt, David Center and Pastor Hee Jung Yu. The luncheon was good as usual. Our guest speaker was Tina Smith, program director for Family Services. She spoke of the many holiday baskets that were collected for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. She told of one little boy who looked at the Easter basket filled with food and games. He told his Mom that he wanted the marshmallows that were in the basket. He wanted to know if he could take it home because he really wanted the marshmallows. Rachel Wintergerst made a lovely carrot cake for the birthday people. The cake for March will be furnished by Hazel Cook. Bob Denham will be our speaker for March 14 on the 360 program. Come and hear and be blessed. Thank you to all that brought food for the food pantry for Family Services. See you next month. Eleanor Johnson and Elaine Thorpe Attention Movie Lovers The Movie Lovers will meet on the usual third Tuesday this month. You are invited to join the group at the movies on Tuesday, February 20. We ll see the first showing of the chosen film, hopefully starting between 10 and 11 a.m. Our discussion after the film will be at either Las Fuentes or Farmer Boys. Which movie we see, and which theater we go to, depends on what s showing that week, and that will be announced in worship the Sunday before the gathering. Summary of February 25 Church Council CONSIDERATION OF MUSIC DIRECTOR POSITION: Chair Bob Denham distributed the Proposed Music Director Position for UUMC. It is hoped the music leaders encouragement of children in music will also increase community participation in our worship services. The position will be offered first to Leslie Kowalski, currently music leader at Emmanuel UMC. BUSINESS REPORTS (brief): Trustee Chair, Gary Wintergerst, is having the roof on one of the Stillman rentals inspected for an repair estimate. United Methodist Women The UMW Esther-Lydia Circle met on at Elaine Thorpe s home on February 22, focusing on the vulnerability of women and children with an initial study of Naomi and Ruth. Naomi returned to Jerusalem without husband or sons and asked the women there to call her Mara, as her life had become bitter. We shared changes in our lives which have left us empty or bitter. Naomi was so consumed with grief, she didn t initially see the blessings God gave to her in returning with Ruth during the barley harvest season. God provided a kinsman-redeemer for them, affirming the amazing faith Ruth claimed for their unknown future. Second chances abound with God and Jesus intent on redeeming us. We reflected on ways we have stepped into a second-chance future or have given support to others. Combining individual efforts in our church and UMW strengthens our help to others. We looked at current efforts of UMW to support and protect women from our district through world mission levels. Hostess Doris Washom offered carrot cake to complete our lunches. All are welcome March 22 nd at 10:30 am in the Wesley Lounge. If you wish to extend the fellowship of dessert and drink, Bring a light lunch if you wish to extend the fellowship of dessert and drink to a noon meal. Our Sunday child care attendant will represent the Young Women of the East District, along with two or three other members who are also a part of the Young Women, Limitless of the East District UMW, at the United Methodist Women s Assembly, to be held in Columbus, Ohio May 18 through the 20 th. Mikhayla has a scholarship which paid registration fees, but needs to fund an air flight to Ohio, three nights of housing, and meals. Gifts may be made through the end of April; if you use a check, make it out to UUMC and be certain to add UMW Assembly on the note line so the money can be forwarded to her.
