R E A D I N G C O M P R E H E N S I O N Read the article below. here are two (2) exercises (on the next page) to do after you read. BUDDHISM Strictly speaking Buddhism is not a religion since it is not centred on a god but is rather a system of philosophy and a code of morality. It covers a wide range of interpretations of the basic beliefs that started with the enlightenment of the Buddha in North India around 2500 years ago. Siddartha Gutama, born a prince, is said to be the most recent Buddha, or Enlightened One, and is not expected to be the last. he most recent Buddha was born into the Sakya clan in Kushinagara, on the border of Nepal and India, around 563 B.C. During his lifetime a political revolution was underway. ribal clans with collective governments were replaced with monarchies. Legend tells that he was a prince, but the Buddhist sculptures also portray him as a displaced clan member unhappy with the loss of liberty under autocratic monarchs. He joined the ranks of homeless ascetic sages, who included the followers of Mahavira, founder of the Jain monastic order, who believed that following austerities (e.g. fasting, meditating) purified the soul. In his lifetime, the Buddha gained enlightenment, and gained many followers. He didn t write down his dharma (for Buddhists this means teachings ), but organised a community of celibate monks, the Sangha, to memorise and spread his teachings as well as work towards their own enlightenment. While the Jains went for complete asceticism isolation, rigorous self-denial, nakedness the Buddha organised the Sangha along communal lines. he patronage of kings was vital to the dominance of Buddhism in India for more than 1000 years. hough the Sangha continued the traditions of the wandering hermit monks of the Buddha s age, it gave moral sanction to monarchies. Ashoka, the great Indian emperor, was a devout Buddhist. He sent missions to all the known world, and according to the legend his son Mahinda brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. It took a stronghold almost immediately, and the relationship between Sri Lanka s kings and the Buddhist clergy made it a kind of Buddhist theocracy. Sri Lanka has since been looked upon as a centre for Buddhist culture and teaching. Starting around the time of Ashoka, a schism developed in the Buddhist world, so that today there are two major schools of Buddhism, heravada and Mahayana. he heravada (thera means a learned elder) uses the Pali Canon of scriptures, written down around the time of Christ in Pali, a language related to the Buddha s native tongue. Mahayana (large vehicle) sees heravada as too dry and academic, and attributes many miraculous powers to Buddha. here are also differences in art and in the language of the scriptures Mahayana scriptures are in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language of philosophy and religion, not Pali. he Mahayana school has not rejected the heravada teachings but claims that it has extended them; the heravada school, though, sees the Mahayana as a corruption of the Buddha s teachings.
