Thoughts from Pastor Janice Dear friends, Consider this: what is the spiritual environment of our congregation? How do strangers [visitors] perceive us? What matters to us, not according to what we say, but according to how we actually behave? What does Jesus think should matter to us [i.e., what matters to him]? Questions from a Visitor s Perspective how would a visitor to our church answer the following questions? Can I sense the presence of God? Is this church others-centered? Do you use understandable terminology? Are there people who look like me? Does the church handle problems in a healthy manner? Is the church accessible? Is there a sense of expectancy? CONSIDER: 1. Can I sense the presence of God? People expect God to come to church. Experiencing the supernatural is a high priority in today s culture. 2. Is this church others-centered? An others-centered church is immediately interested in new people, what they need, and how the church can help. The others-centered church talks little about its programs or its people unless that is truly helpful to the newcomer. 3. Do you use understandable terminology? Healthy churches tend to speak in terms everyone can understand. They make an effort to translate religious terminology into everyday language. 4. Are there people who look like me? As soon as most of us enter a room, we look around to see what everyone looks like. Our level of comfort can be high or low depending on how quickly we find someone else who looks like us. In a room full of women, a man thinks, I m in the wrong place. In a church where all the people up front are men, women wonder if they are welcome. 5. Does the church handle problems in a healthy manner? You can often tell more about a church by the way it handles problems than by the way it handles success. 6. Is the church accessible? Wheelchair ramps and parking stalls are only the beginning of accessibility. Is there clear and easy access to getting questions answered, meeting new people, talking to church leaders, joining the membership, becoming part of a small group, resolving complaints, and signing up to serve? 7. Is there a sense of expectancy? Listen to hallway conversations about the church, and you can decide if the primary verb tense is (continued on Page 3) 2 Council/Elder Meeting, July 17, 2018 Members Present: Pastor Janice Kuder, Kelly Zillmer, Jackie Baldwin, Kris Zillmer, Pete Fannin, Brian Knight, Tina Schultz, Jen Reinke Absent: Sarah Blashe Meeting was called to order by Pete Fannin at 5:50 p.m. Kris Zillmer arrived late to the meeting. VBS Quilt The quilt below was made by the 5-9 grade VBS students and sewn together by Sue Miller. It will be auctioned off at a later date. Two more squares were available and are being made into throw pillows to go with the quilt. Stay tuned for date and time! 10 (Continued from Page 2) past, present, or future. Most healthy churches are permeated with high expectations of God s blessing for the future. CONSIDER: Which of these questions can our church answer well? What is one concrete way we can improve one answer? The apostle Paul prayed that believers would be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. When has our church been filled with the fullness of God? CONSIDER: John 13:12-17: After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, "Do you understand what I was doing? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because it is true. And since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. How true it is that a servant is not greater than the master. Nor are messengers more important than the one who sends them. You know these things now do them! That is the path of blessing. SERVICE: Meeting the needs of others is the path of blessing Ephesians 2:19-22: So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also joined together as part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit. WELCOME THE STRANGER: People we think of as strangers and outsiders belong in the Body of Christ just as much as we do! Yours in Christ, Pastor Janice Welcome Team / Hospitality Captain The Elders are seeking an individual to serve our congregation as Hospitality Captain, to oversee the various tasks of hospitality and welcoming and would recruit others to be part of a Welcoming Team. This isn t meant to be a committee that holds meetings but a team that serves by showing hospitality to both members of our congregation and visitors to worship or other events hosted by St. Peter s. The Welcoming Team would include ushers and greeters and others. Is this description piquing your interest? Is God perhaps calling you up to take on this role? If you d like to see a complete job description or have any other questions, let Pr. Janice or one of the Elders know: Nancy Heiman, Faye Miller, David Schmidt, and Shawn Peebles. Please pray about who God might be raising up to be our Hospitality Captain. 3
