Fifth Sunday-Ordinary Time Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Faith Formation News Page 3 Dear Parishioners: "You are the light of the world." Speaking to his followers, Jesus tells them of the influence they are meant to have. Like the seasoning that gives food its flavor, they are to be "the salt of the earth" and like a lamp on a lampstand that "gives light to all in the house." Clearly, their influence on the people around them is meant to be positive and substantial. But what is the source of this irreplaceable influence? Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus declares that HE is "the light of the world" (cf. Jn 8:12). So when he tells his disciples that "your light must shine before others," he is speaking about the light that comes from following him, from believing in him, from living their lives for him and with him. The light of Christ brightens the world, showing us the truth and meaning of our existence. And to the extent that we have that light in our hearts, it naturally spreads out to impact those around us. So, today we must ask ourselves whether or not we are shining the way we are meant to as Christians. Do we brighten up our families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our parishes? Are people encouraged, inspired, edified, and supported by our presence? Do we bring the kind of flavor that enriches life with a taste of the authentic truth, beauty, and goodness that comes from God alone? Or have we become a bit bland, like salt that "loses its taste" or light that is hidden "under a bushel basket"? It's important to be on guard against any tendency to let our faith be reduced to a mere routine or ritual. Rather, when we nurture our faith to be a living force that defines us and our actions, it will be a source of joy and renewal not only for us, but for the whole world. Yours in Christ Father Brian 2017 Charity and Development Appeal Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offenses, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. Pope Francis Next weekend is the annual Charity and Development Appeal. The CDA plays an important role in supporting and nurturing the faith of all those in our Diocese. The CDA is love and faith in action. A gift of $120 or $12 per month can help feed a family of 4 for a week and provide an expectant mother a first look at her baby through an ultrasound. The impact of your gift can reach more people through CDA. Help support the more than 70 programs and organizations across the Diocese. With your gift to the CDA, you heed the Pope s call to be an instrument of God s mercy. More information can be found at dphx.org/cda. Thank you for your support Sacrament classes are closed for the 2016/17 school year. This includes 2nd, 3rd, Confirmation and Heritage. All other classes, Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth and Fifth Grades remain open all year. Please make sure your children are in class on time and picked up on time. Confirmation and First Communion for all third graders and above that are not being baptized at the Easter Vigil will be on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 2pm. The Confirmation/ First Communion Retreat for Heritage and all third graders will be Saturday, February, 25th. All third grade and Heritage parents will be asked to come in and pick up and sign out your Confirmation/ First Communion packet with important information concerning the sacraments, rehearsal schedules, dress code, etc. during your child s class this week. We will not send these home with the child as the information is too important. Please have an adult sign for them. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation please contact me at kstine@diocesephoenix.org or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God s Blessings, Kathie Adult Confirmation Anyone 18 years and older and out of High School are invited to join us for an evening of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 6:30-9:00pm in rooms 201 and 202 in the Parish Center. Please contact Kathie Stine at 480-661-9843 ext. 309 or kstine@diocesephoenix.org to register. Confirmation is an important and powerful sacrament of initiation in the Catholic Church, but so many missed this sacrament at the younger ages. You cannot be a sponsor or godparent without Confirmation. If you are a Baptized practicing Catholic who has received first Communion but missed the reception of Confirmation and would like to be confirmed at our liturgy on April 30, 2017 at 2pm please register and bring a copy of your baptismal certificate to the meeting. I am looking forward to helping you complete your initiation into the Catholic Church. High School Teens! Come and join us for the following Life Teen Events: 2/5 - "Say What?" Come to "That Man Is You" this Spring for a new video series: "The Bible and the Sacraments" This program examines the sacraments of the Catholic faith, not simply looking at the basic teaching of the Church as to their meaning and origin, it investigates the deeper mysteries they contain as illuminated by scripture. The Bible and the Sacraments looks at each sacrament individually, seeking to understand where they come from, what they mean, and why they are so important and foundational to our faith. Finding their institution in Christ and their origin in salvation history, they are God s gift of life to His children. Hope to see you Friday mornings. Kent Campbell
