Knights in Action Newsletter March 2017 Volume 2, Issue 3 Knights of Columbus Pope John Paul the Great Council 13784 LOVE GOD AND SERVE YOUR NEIGHBOR ASH WEDNESDAY (March 1st) OUR PRINCIPLES Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism What's the purpose of Ash Wednesday? It marks first day of the 40 days of Lent, a roughly six-week period (not including Sundays) dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter. It ends on Holy Thursday, the fifth day of Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter) that marks the Last Supper. In addition to certain rules about foods and fasting, many Christians (and even non-christians) abstain from additional foods, luxury or material goods or certain activities and habits. Where do the ashes some people put on their face come from? They're obtained from the burning of the palms of the previous Palm Sunday, which occurs on the Sunday before Easter, and applied during services. Palm Sunday marks Jesus' return to Jerusalem, when people waved palm branches to celebrate his arrival. The ashes are typically mixed with Holy Water or oil. What do the ashes mean? The ashes, applied in the shape of a cross, are a symbol of penance, mourning and mortality. Centuries ago, participants used to sprinkle themselves with ashes and repent much more publicly, but the practice fell away sometime between the 8th-10th century before evolving into what it is today. There aren't any particular rules about how long the ashes should be worn, but most people wear them throughout the day as a public expression of their faith and penance. What else do Catholics have to do? On Ash Wednesday, Catholic adults must observe a fast eating only one large meal or two small meals. Those meals must not contain any meat. In fact, Catholics 14 and older must refrain from eating meat on every Friday from Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. In accordance with Lent as a time of abstinence, many Catholics choose to give something up or change an ingrained habit during the 40-day period. The Church also encourages the faithful to give more time to prayer and charity before the celebration of Easter. There you grew in age, wisdom and grace as you prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer. We entrust our family to you. O Blessed Mary, you are the Mother of our Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus and nurtured him in the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you. O Saint Joseph, You provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you. Holy Family, We consecrate ourselves and our family to you. May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life. Help us grow in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer, diligent in our work, and generous toward those in need. May our home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! As you may have heard, the Appeal has changed timing from the fall to the spring and all 145 parishes are once again conducting it at the same time. This year s theme is inspired by two sources. The first source is Galatians 6:10.: So, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially to those who are of the household of faith. The second source is from Pope Pius XII. In his Encyclical Mystici Corporis he says that there can be no discontinuity between the inward and outward graces of the Church in all its members (Cf. DS 3808 ff.), indicating that the gifts to the Church are to radiate outward, a theme repeated in Gaudium et Spes regarding the wider creation. With an overall goal of nearly $2.7 million, the 2017 Appeal will provide critical funding to nineteen diverse and impactful ministries that affect the lives of thousands of people in our Diocese. We look forward to sharing with you more about the Appeal and its impact in the very near future. 4

GRAND KNIGHT S NOTE Worthy Brothers, we are now past the halfway point in this Fraternal Year, and although we have been doing great so far there is always room to do more. Starting membership and insurance numbers for Star Council was 7 new members and 3 new insurances, and as of this writing we are at 6 new members and 3 new insurances, so we only need 1 new member to meet the numbers part of the Star Council Program. I truly believe that we can make these numbers, and even more, with your continued hard work. This is a team effort and we only have a few months to make it happen as June 30 th will be upon us faster than we think. With the new Fraternal Year coming quickly, it is time to think about the new Council Officers and upcoming elections. I will step down as Grand Knight so someone will need to step up and run the Council. I am hoping that some of you will consider volunteering for a Council position as many of the current officers have held their positions for longer than a year and need a break. Here is a list of Officers we will be casting votes for in May/June. OUR SHINING STARS FOR FRATERNAL YEAR 2015-2016 KNIGHT OF THE YEAR SK Christian Brousseau FAMILY OF THE YEAR The Fritz Family YOUNG MAN OF THE YEAR Nestor Guardado YOUNG WOMAN OF THE YEAR Maria Meza OUR POPES OF PAST Saint Adrian III (884-885): Born in Rome, he was elected Pope in May of the year 884. He refused to give in to Emperor Basilius of the East, who pressured him for the annulment of Fozio s excommunication. Adrian established that, imperial confirmation was unnecessary to consecrate the Pope. While he was on his way to France, invited by Emperor Charles the Fat to participate at the Diet of Worms, he died in route and was buried in the Abbey of Nonantolo, near Modena. He was proclaimed Saint, but the nomination was challenged until June of 1891 when he became a Saint. 7
