February 26, 2017 Eighth Sunday-Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners:" Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?" No, indeed we can't. But evidence does suggest that worrying can subtract time from our life span! Clearly, we are not meant to worry. It's not healthy and it's not useful. But for many of us, it's quite difficult not to be anxious and concerned about matters that are important to us. So what is the secret to letting go of this unnecessary anxiety? Jesus gives us an answer in today's Gospel. "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides." In other words, our focus should be on being faithful followers of God. When we put our trust in the providence of the One who "clothes the grass of the field," and stop trying to rely on our own (meager) powers, then things will be taken care of: "Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all." Part of the secret here, of course, is coming to accept God's will for us, even when it doesn't perfectly match what we may have been envisioning. There is a kind of surrender involved that puts God's plan first. Instead of getting worked up that things aren't going our way, this kind of reliance upon God enables us to relax and accept the way things are going. The great spiritual writer, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, put in well in his work, Abandonment to Divine Providence, when he said, "To escape the distress caused by regret for the past or fear about the future, this is the rule to follow: leave the past to the infinite mercy of God, the future to His good Providence, give the present wholly to His love by being faithful to His grace." God takes care of the birds, the flowers, even the grass! He will also take care of us. Yours in Christ Father Brian 2017 Charity and Development Appeal Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offenses, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. Pope Francis The annual Charity and Development Appeal plays an important role in supporting and nurturing the faith of all those in our Diocese. The CDA is love and faith in action. A gift of $120 or $12 per month can help feed a family of 4 for a week and provide an expectant mother a first look at her baby through an ultrasound. The impact of your gift can reach more people through CDA. Help support the more than 70 programs and organizations across the Diocese. With your gift to the CDA, you heed the Pope s call to be an instrument of God s mercy. More information can be found at dphx.org/cda. Thank you for your support Faith Formation News Page 3 This Wednesday, March 1st, is Ash Wednesday. We will have a prayer service with the distribution of ashes to all children and their families attending classes that day. It will begin at 5pm in the Church. Masses are at 8:30am and 6:00pm. Sacrament classes are closed for the 2016/17 school year. This includes 2nd, 3rd, Confirmation and Heritage. All other classes, Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth and Fifth Grades remain open all year. Please make sure your children are in class on time and picked up on time. Confirmation and First Communion for all third graders and above that are not being baptized at the Easter Vigil will be on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 2pm. All third grade and Heritage parents should have picked up their packets concerning the sacraments, rehearsal schedules, dress code, etc. during your child s class last week. There are a few left. We will not send these home with the child as the information is too important. Please have an adult sign for them. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation please contact me at kstine@diocesephoenix.org or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661- 9843, Ext.309. God s Blessings, Kathie ASH WEDNESDAY March 1st, 2017 Mass times will be 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Lenten Questions & Answers: Q. I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I m not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products? A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods, such as gelatin butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted. Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts? A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full meatless meal. Some food can be taken at other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.
