rom the Pastor s Desk; We have little experience in our culture outside of Palm/ F Passion Sunday to welcome the Savior and Redeemer the way our ancestors in faith did. Fourth of July, Memorial Day or Veteran s Day parades do little to prepare us for this great feast. Can we imagine the excitement and anticipation of the people as onlookers waved olive and some palm branches and proclaimed their blessings? Yet on this day the people welcomed their king, yet in a few days that enthusiasm and welcome changed to Crucify Him! The crowd s change of heart illustrates the problem of holding God to our expectations. The crowd expected a liberating leader from the Roman oppression. Jesus instead takes up his cross and invites us to do the same. Through his death and Resurrection he is indeed a liberator, but from death and sin, not from the Roman oppressors. But unable to see past their need, the crowd s disappointment turns into anger and a desire for capital punishment. As we enter into Holy Week, Palm Sunday teaches us to let God be God, and to trust in God s wisdom not only to meet but to shatter our expectations. n Holy Thursday at 7:30 PM we are invited to share in Jesus mandatum and be of service through the O washing of feet, celebrate Eucharist and then stay awake for awhile in reflection and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar of Repose. On Good Friday at 7:30 p.m. we gather in silence listen to John s Passion, pray intercessions for the world, venerate the cross and share in a communion service. On Holy Saturday we reconvene for the Easter Vigil where we will baptize, confirm and offer Eucharist for the First time to four young ladies in our parish. We start with the new fire outside at 8:15 PM, sing the Exsultet, listen to the history of our salvation through several scripture texts and sing God s glorious praises in the Gloria and Alleluia and the Easter Gospel. We prepare for and celebrate the Rites of Initiation and then renew our own baptismal promises before entering into the Eucharist. We sing Alleluia! And then go forth tired to greet the new day, the day of Resurrection on Easter. ay our almsgiving, fasting and prayer help us to celebrate these great holy days. M Lenten Blessings, Father Larry Hendel ADA 2018 We surpassed the Diocese ADA goal! Every dollar that is given to the ADA 2018 going forward is returned to this Parish. 100% of it. What will we do with that?! Create a beautiful outdoor environment under the Oak Tree that will be available for Mass and weddings. If you have not given to the ADA as yet please donate now. The Season of Easter The Easter Season is the 50 days following the Easter Vigil. It begins with Easter Sunday and ends on Pentecost. White is the color for the season, which includes sung Alleluias, Baptismal water blessings and light from the Easter candle. Everyone celebrates the risen Christ! Rites of Initiation In Baptism, we are born as a new creation. Through Confirmation we are strengthened to live out our faith. In the Eucharist, we continue to receive spiritual nourishment week after week. We pray for our Candidates and Catechumen, Amber Rout Kendra Rout Kassandra Santillan Miranda Santillan as they journey toward full initiation into the life of the Catholic faith. Come to Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 31, 8:15 p.m. and be part of this special celebration. Any baptized Catholic adult who has received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation, but not the sacrament of Confirmation is invited to consider celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation at Pentecost. Fr. Larry will begin a five session special preparation class for adults on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Guadalupe meeting room beginning, April 11th. Those who complete the process will be sent to Saint Joseph Cathedral on May 20th at 3:00 p.m. to join other adults who wish to complete their initiation by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Please call the parish office if you are interested (408) 997-4800. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:7-8 Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, one of the most significant moments of the Church year. During this week, we journey with Christ from his triumphant entry into Jerusalem to his final meal with his closest friends and ultimately to his death on the cross. As we walk with Jesus through Holy Week, we call to mind the countless men, women and children who even today carry heavy crosses: crosses of hunger, of homelessness, of a lack of resources or security. In these brothers and sisters we encounter Christ, Christ who continues to walk that long road to Calvary. This final week of Lent is a time, too, to reflect on those words of St. Paul to the Philippians. Jesus emptied himself for us; how might we empty ourselves for others? Our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving have prepared us to wrestle with this question. We must always remember that Holy Week gives way to Easter; the fast turns into a feast. God wins the day. As we prepare to celebrate Easter joy, it is our responsibility as members of God s one human family to share that joy with everyone, near and far. Remember to bring your CRS Rice Bowl or donation checks to church On Holy Thursday and place them in the baskets provided. Thank you! 7th - 8th grade BLAST meets next week April 3rd!
