November 29, 2015 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 From the Administrator... I hope and pray that you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with family and friends. The holiday season is truly here, and the final weeks of 2015 will pass very quickly. We celebrate the First Sunday of Advent this weekend, and we will hear messages from Isaiah and John the Baptist that will encourage us as we prepare the way of the Lord. Try not to get so caught up in the materialism and consumerism of the season that you forget that the celebration of the Birth of Jesus is what these days are all about! Carve out time for prayer in your busy schedule. Send religious Christmas cards and use religious Christmas stamps. Pray for your family as you purchase gifts and send Christmas greetings. As you bake, remember a lonely neighbor by bringing over a plate of cookies. Call someone instead of sending a text or posting on Facebook. Sometimes these small gestures help us to keep the focus on the Incarnation the Word made Flesh for our salvation. The Giving Trees are up in the church corridors. Once again, we will provide simple Christmas gifts to the residents of Ozanam Nursing Home. The young people from the Ablaze Youth Group have taken on this project again this year. Please take an ornament from one of the trees and be sure to attach the ornament to the gift when you return it and place it under the tree. The Academy is sponsoring a Toys for Tots collection again this year. If you would like to participate, please place new, unwrapped toys in the boxes provided at the doors to the church by December 13 th. In this season of giving, it is important to remember the less fortunate. Blessed Mother Teresa used to remind her sisters to see Christ in the poor whom they served. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Pope Francis announced a special Jubilee Year of Mercy, which begins on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 th. In the weeks ahead, we will announce initiatives in the diocese, in the parish, and even in the Universal Church, that will take place during this special year. Over the past few years, the local dioceses worked together to provide Reconciliation Monday during Holy Week, where priests are available in every church on Long Island, in our diocese, and in the Archdiocese of New York to hear confessions for an extended period on that specific day. This year, we will all join together to provide a similar opportunity during Advent. On Monday, December 14 th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, priests will be available for confessions in virtually every church in all three dioceses. Here at St. Kevin, we will expose the Blessed Sacrament during those hours for private prayer and devotion before the Eucharist, praying for God s mercy for all of us. Giving Trees The Ablaze Youth Ministry invites the parish of St. Kevin to join them for the second year of their Giving Tree outreach for our friends and neighbors at Ozanam Hall. Please visit the Giving Trees that are located in all of the vestibules of the Church and select an ornament with a suggested gift needed by one of the residents. We ask that you bring your wrapped gift, with the ornament attached, to church by the weekend of December 19th and 20th. We hope to share our Christmas joy with the residents of Ozanam Hall and give them a sense of belonging to our faith community. IF you go out of your way to put a strong focus on waiting and preparing for Jesus and spend extra time in prayer with Him. IF you can possibly keep your Christmas décor down to a minimum until the actual Christmas season as your way of joining in the fast before the feast of Christmas.**** IF you have regular family discussions about the importance of waiting and the good that can come from patience and preparing. IF you receive the healing sacrament of Penance before Christmas. IF you seek ways to give to the poor and less fortunate. IF you remember the words from the Gospel of Matthew on the first day of Advent when Jesus tells us to be prepared, for at the hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Let that be your motivation for preparation. IF instead of saying oh man, we ve got 20 more days of Advent to go, you say, Eek! We only have 20 days to get ready! Come on, let s not waste a single day of it! IF you pray the joyful mysteries often, especially the first three joyful mysteries (the Annunciation, the Visitation and the Nativity). ***Please note that we will follow suggestion #2 as we keep our Church decorations to a minimum until the actual Christmas season. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Stewardship Thought On this first Sunday of Advent, Jesus warns His disciples about the end-time. He urges them to pray, be vigilant, spiritually awake, avoid selfindulgence, spiritual malaise and a preoccupation with anxiety. Jesus advises against a lifestyle of earthly pleasures and worry. These will not matter when the Lord asks for an account of our stewardship. Stewards realize their lives are not just about the here and now. They know themselves to be reflections of God s active presence in the world and witnesses of the Lord s promises. As we begin this season of hope, let us reflect on the practical effect of having every waking moment in our lives dedicated to the Lord. VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE PROGRAM The Vocation Prayer Chalice Program continues here at St. Kevin. This program encourages families or households to pray regularly for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Each week a family/household will receive the Vocation Chalice at Mass and take it home with a promise to pray for vocations during that week. The family/household/single parishioner places the chalice in a prominent place in the home and gathers as a family or invites friends together each day to pray around the chalice, asking God to help raise awareness for vocations in the Church and from our parish. Resources will be given with a different prayer for each day. At the end of the week, the family brings the chalice back to the parish so the next family can take it home. We hope that through prayer, our parish will become a source of vocations to serve the diocese and the Church. If you are interested, please see the signup sheet in the vestibule as you exit the church by the elevator.
