They make great stocking stuffers or Christmas gifts. Calendars are available in the parish office and in the gathering area, and watch for them to be sold after Masses and during other parish events. Please return your completed ticket stubs with $20 per entry in an envelope marked Calendar Raffle. (Ticket stubs will not be accepted without payment.) Entries can be returned to the parish office or dropped in the collection basket no later than December 31. A winning ticket will be picked each day. There will be 363 chances to win $20 and two chances to win $100. Winning names will be re-entered for additional chances to win. Archdiocese celebrating 175 years On Sunday, November 25, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will begin a yearlong celebration of its 175th anniversary, beginning with an Opening Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at 2:00PM. All Catholics are invited to this Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jerome Listecki, Auxiliary Bishop Jeffrey Haines, and Auxiliary Bishop James Schuerman, along with priests of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Immediately afterwards, a reception will follow at the Pfister Hotel (414 East Wisconsin Avenue). Mass and reception are expected to be at full capacity so please plan to arrive early. Shattered: A Poverty Simulation Shattered: A Poverty Simulation presented by Just Ministries November 17, 9:00AM-12:00PM, St. Catherine School Gym Adults and teens invited to participate. Shattered is a unique, interactive experience designed to help communities understand poverty. The simulation allows for individuals to experience what it is like to live below the poverty line. Participants will confront the choices and challenges people in poverty face on a daily basis and will be given an opportunity to reflect on the harsh realities of poverty. Most importantly, it encourages people to make a difference. Milwaukee 53206 film follow-up On May 23, the NMCP Christian Formation and Human Concerns Committees sponsored a viewing of the documentary film Milwaukee 53206, which deals with the high incarceration rates of black men living in the 53206 zip code. For all those who attended the screening of this film, we wanted to share an update on Baron Walker, the husband of Beverly Walker, whose life and family were highlighted in the film. He was released from prison after 22 years of incarceration. The article about his case was published on August 16, 2018, reported by Bruce Vielmetti. St. Catherine columbarium garden Saint Catherine of Alexandria Parish announces its new columbarium garden. This structure for urns holding a deceased s cremated remains will be installed in spring or early summer of 2019. Pre-construction prices are available at this time and you do not need to be a parishioner of St. Catherine to purchase a niche. The garden will be located directly south of their current cemetery at the parish. Most of us when asked for something whether it be our time, our talent, or our treasure assess whether we can afford to fulfill the request and still preserve our own needs. Have we ever given the last bit of what we had knowing that we will have to do without so that someone else can benefit? We all tend to be a little covetous of our time, talent, and treasure. There are people throughout history who have given everything away only to find that they have received much more in return. Saint Francis of Assisi is a prime witness. The Scriptures today bring us two widows who do the same. Do we see in people such as this examples of foolishness or wisdom, inspiration, and hope? Annual Report St. Vincent de Paul St. Bernadette Conference Who Are We? Our membership consists of eight active and eight associate members. We serve in a geographic area determined by the Milwaukee Council of St. Vincent de Paul, welcoming people of all religious beliefs. What Do We Do? We try to follow in the footsteps of our founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, in seeing to the dignity of the human person. Through home visits, we assess the needs of those who come to us. Most are living at poverty level or are having temporary difficulty in providing for their families. We try to meet their needs directly or by referrals to other community resources. Why Do We Do It? We share a desire to live out our religious convictions, to go out and love and serve each other as taught and lived by Jesus Christ, the greatest servant of all time. Where Do We Get Our Funding and Support? Most of our funding comes from the parishioners of St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Good Hope through poor box donations and mail-in donations. Our food pantry is stocked through weekly donations of food from parishioners. Father Greg has designated the Thanksgiving and Holy Thursday offertory collections for our use. We accept donations of used furniture and appliances. Our Sharing Tree at Christmas generates approximately $3,000 in gifts. Gifts of bedding are given throughout the year as needed. Who Did We Serve This Last Year? We served 868 brothers and sisters in need with food, furniture, or other help. We made 168 home visits in our ministry this past year. Goods and services given to those in need totaled approximately $24,799, representing 1,212 hours of service. Would You Like To Join Our Society? Sharing Tree This Advent, our St. Vincent de Paul conference will again sponsor the Sharing Tree, which will be located in the gathering area of church. As in the past, we will be combining our ministry with two others, the Parish Health Ministry and Human Concerns Ministry. Along with our usual ornaments of gift requests for the needy families our conference serves, we will have additional ornaments in the shapes of poinsettias and Christmas trees. The ornaments will represent the following gift requests: A donation of $10.00 toward plants for our homebound parishioners Men s underwear (M, L), white under-shirts (XL), white crew socks (package of 6), washcloths, bath-sized towels, large bottles of body wash, and double-edged disposable razors (blue handles) for the visitors of Guest House Clothing, toys, and bedding for the families served by our St. V.D.P. conference Each ornament will be marked with a specific gift item. Gift ornaments can be taken from the tree the weekend of November 24th and 25th. Gifts need to be brought back by December 16th for sorting and delivery. Please wrap the St. VdP gifts. Be sure to tape your gift ornament on the package so we know what item it is. The tag will be removed before delivery. When you bring in your gift, you may place it under the tree and then choose a bow from a nearby basket to hang on the tree to represent your gift. Please do not wrap the Guest House items or bedding items. These gifts will be used throughout the year as needed. If you are unable to shop, but would like to be a part of this ministry, please mail in or drop your donation in an envelope marked Sharing Tree in the collection basket.
