Twelve Confirmation Prep sessions are required for Eighth graders who wish to receive the Sacrament. CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The process where those inquiring about becoming a Roman Catholic are invited to journey with Church members in sharing their faith, while discerning God s call to conversion. Please contact the Parish Office for further information. Parish Membership New members need to contact the Parish Office to register for an Evening of Welcome at which time the process of formally becoming a parishioner will be initiated. We receive many requests for certificates of sponsorship for Baptism and Confirmation. Certificates can only be given to registered members of the parish who have actively practiced their faith for at least three months. Members are those who regularly attend Mass and participate in and support the life of the Church. Sacraments Prayer Opportunities BAPTISM The Rite of Baptism is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month following the 11:00 am Mass and the third Sunday of the month at the 11:00 am liturgy, except during Lent. Parents must attend an obligatory preparation session prior to the child s birth. Arrangements for a Baptismal date are made at that session. MATRIMONY In accordance with Diocesan policy, couples wishing to be married at OLL must participate in a one-year preparation program, which includes FOCCUS, Pre-Cana, God s Plan for a Faith-Filled Marriage, and required paperwork. Please confirm the date with the Church prior to making other plans. Marriages take place on Fridays and Saturdays no Sunday weddings. Page 3

A Note From Fr. Len Earthquakes, hurricanes and shootings some believe that these are signs of the end of time. Historically, incidents like this have happened before, numerous times, and as a people united we have moved beyond them. The big question is how do we get beyond these times? It is through a vision that anything is possible if we trust, believe, and have hope. In my homily last weekend, I referenced a number of individuals in our parish that have initiated programs to address those in need in our community and area. Their actions echo our Stewardship theme, What We Do Together, Makes a Difference. However, these projects could not become a reality if the aforementioned individuals were not already involved and connected to the life of our parish. My call for this weekend is for all to prayerfully consider getting involved in the life of the parish. With a strong base we can do so much more. At the present time there are three ministries that need our assistance. The Pre-Baptism Program meets parents that have recently been blessed with a child and offers them the tools needed to present the child for the sacrament. Assistance is needed at the session to support the coordinator. This finetuned machine just needs a few assistants. No special training is needed, just a love of children and our faith. The program is offered four times a year for one hour. The second ministry is Pre-Cana. Requirements are simple a couple must be married and practicing their faith. The team meets once prior to the annual Pre-Cana Program on the first Saturday of March. The coordinators are seeking additional couples so that our parish can address the needs of those preparing for the sacrament. Finally, the Liturgical Decorating Committee assures our community that when we worship, the Sanctuary reflects the season. There are two major sessions (prior to Christmas and Easter) that a majority of the work is done, however a little help throughout the year assures that plants are watered and the environment is pleasing year round. To receive more information or to join any of these ministries, please contact me at either pastor@ollwhs.org or 534-2319 ext. 11 and I will direct you to the person in charge. Over the next few weeks I will invite you to consider a few more ministries that need our assistance. When our home base is strong, we can address more issues. Then we will see that neither earthquakes nor hurricanes nor shootings can hinder us from the mission of proclaiming the Good News. Monday 9 Tuesday 10 Wednesday 11 Jon 1:1--2:2, 11/Jon 2:3-5, 8/Lk 10:25-37 Celeste Mascola r/b Valerie and Daniel Ficula The Parish Office is closed in observance of Columbus Day. No Youth Faith Formation Music Ministry Chamber Orchestra The instrumentalists in our Chamber Orchestra enhance our liturgies in a musically rich way. If you play an orchestral instrument at the high school level or above, there is a spot for you in our ensemble. The Chamber Orchestra accompanies our Adult Choir and congregation, usually at the 11:00 am Mass about twice a month. Orchestra members improve their musical abilities and make lasting friendships. Rehearsals take place on an as-needed basis. Other instrumentalists, such as guitarists, are also encouraged to play at Mass. This can be on a flexible schedule, based on the player s availability. Interested? Or want more information? Email Jim Cole at music@ollwhs.org. What We Do Together, Makes a Difference 3.4% and Still Counting! Last week we received responses from 3.4% of our parishioners. This has resulted in an increase over our usual collection of close to $221.00. Full participation will benefit everyone in the parish. We hope to hear from you next week! Calling All Sewers and Needle Pointers! The Baptismal Garment Ministry is a very special and important ministry at OLL. This ministry constructs and needlepoints the garments given to all children being baptized. It is a great way to be a part of a ministry yet work from your own home when you are available. If you can sew or needlepoint (patterns are provided) and would like to be part of this great ministry, contact Paula Fasano at bapgarment@ollwhs.org. If you do not use email, contact Bridget at 534-2319 x 14. All types of nonperishable food items are welcome; however, we are especially in need of juices, pancake mix and syrup, spaghetti sauce, and paper goods. Please do not donate food items beyond their "Use by" date. Thank you for your continued generosity. Faith Formation Our Parish Youth Needs Volunteers & Mentors Since the parish no longer has a Youth Minister, we are in need of adult volunteers to help lead some of the youth events we have offered in the past. This year we will need leaders for Teen Stations of the Cross and the Easter Egg Hunt which is also supported by the Knights of Columbus. Both events are already well planned out. Please consider supporting these events and our youth with your time and talent. For more information, contact Nina Forestiere at 534-2319 x 17. Adult Faith Formation Join Joline and explore Bishop Barron's new film and study program, David the King. Bishop Barron helps us experience how the whole New Testament opens up once we see it through the person of David. This six-week program starts Tuesday, October 17 at 10:00 am in Old Church Hall. Visit ollwhs.org to view a preview of David the King. Faith Formation Aide Needed We are in need of an assistant for the catechist teaching the 4 th grade class on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:45 pm. There is no experience necessary; just a desire to share our wonderful Catholic faith in a creative, caring environment. Please contact Nina Forestiere at faithformation@ollwhs.org or 534-2319 x 17 to volunteer. Communion Class Reminders: The First Penance Parent Meeting will be held on October 11 at 6:30 pm in Community Hall The Communion Retreat is Saturday, October 21 from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. Attendance is mandatory for all children making their First Penance and First Communion and one parent. Confirmation Retreat The Confirmation Retreat is Saturday, October 21. Lunch will be served at 1:00 pm and the retreat is from 1:45 to 6:30 pm. Mandatory attendance for all candidates making their Confirmation and either their Sponsor (must be over 18 years old) or a parent. Inspiration for the Week How often do we find ourselves wanting what is not ours? Greed, envy, and even gluttony lead us to a bad end. We live in a world that feels very entitled. Many people believe that wants and needs ought to be provided or simply given to them, without any work or effort. It is easy to feel that we have received the short end of the stick or less than what we deserve. However, feeling shortchanged makes it is impossible to walk with gratitude in our hearts and feel a sense of responsibility, the two essential elements of the spiritual life. Are we grateful?
