GRAND KNIGHT S CORNER The adage "Time flies when you're having fun" is so true. This year that I have served as Grand Knight has gone by very fast. As this will be my last newsletter, it is the time to thank those who have made my term so easy. There are two brother Knights who are in that category. The first is my Deputy Grand Knight, Joe Keaney who has endured countless meetings with me trying to solve the month to month problems that we encountered. The second person is Pete Karculias who undertook the monumental task of doing the monthly newsletter. Thank you both for the many hours you put in to make things happen in our Council. Thanks also go out to my fellow officers and Brother Knights and their wives who also gave of their time. This last year was one of accomplishment. We had many good times, but also did a lot of hard work. We could have done much more if more Brother Knights had helped. We EXIST as a Knights of Columbus Council to help our 2
Brother Knights, our church and our community. Please consider becoming more ACTIVE in your council. We need both your physical help and your ideas. The installation of new officers for the coming year will be held on June 8th following the 5 p.m. Mass. A dinner will follow in the Arizona Room. All brother Knights and their families are encouraged to attend, but I need to know if you will be coming so that there will be enough food. Please call me @ 733-0995 and let me know how many will be in attendance. Fraternally yours, Jerry Hennelly Grand Knight 520-733-0995 Email: mailto:ezmh@flash.net The installation of council officers for the 2002-3 Fraternal Year will take place June 8. We will begin with Mass at 5 PM followed by the installation ceremony in the church. Following the ceremony, we will have a dinner in the Arizona room. Everyone is asked to attend. Please call Jerry Hennelly at 733-0995 to let him know so we can plan the meal. LADIES APPRECIATION NIGHT We held our Ladies Appreciation Night May 9 in lieu of our regular business meeting. We went to the Gas Light theater and saw Pirates of the Caribbean (or Corn for a Buccaneer). It was a blast! Everyone I talked to seemed to agree that this was one of the most fun-filled activities in a while. We are thinking about another Gas Light outing in early December. Stay tuned!. Hey, don t miss out on these things! CONGRATULATIONS Knight of the Month for April Terry Klaum Family of the Month for April Nick and Joan Romano OFFICER INSTALLATION 2002 STATE COVENTION The convention was held May 24-26 right here in Tucson at the Doubletree Reid Park on Alvernon. The event was a great success. I attended as an alternate and I would like to make a few remarks. First, one of the best parts of a convention is the chance to hear what a great difference the Knights make to the lives of so many people. The list of service program events and charitable monies raised is so long, the reports had to be abbreviated this year and only the highlights presented. Second, we got to hear some great speakers. Most notable was Ron Gay, past state deputy from Texas and currently Supreme Representative. Ron is a terrific speaker and an accomplished story teller. But what most moved me was his report on the Heroes Fund. Some facts: On Sep 11, the terrorists attacked. On the morning of Sep 12, Supreme Knight Carl 3
Anderson pledged $1 Million dollars to aid the families of the fire, police and emergency workers who lost their lives at the World Trade Center. On Sep 13, field agents of the K of C delivered the first $3,000 checks to affected families scarcely more than 48 hours after the WTC collapse. Donations were made regardless of religious affiliation. Among them were a Baptist and a Jew. When a field agent delivered a check to one family, a small girl asked him if the Knights of Columbus was a large organization. Why, yes he said, We are. Then will you please ask them to look for my Daddy and bring him home? she asked. You should have been there. SERVICE PROGRAMS CHOOSE LIFE You can save lives by helping to prevent an abortion. Each month we will print several suggestions that YOU can do to help. Do at least one of them today. Here are the next in the series. 39) Establish a memorial stone to the preborn in a local cemetery or on Church grounds. Church Activities (Len Rother) A special thanks to all who serve the church in the various ministries the Knights are wellrepresented. We are planning another Communion breakfast possibly at the Viscount. Vocations (Carl Christiansen) No report. Community (Terry Langen) Another blood drive will be held July 7 in the Arizona Room. Donors will receive a ticket entitling them to a free pancake breakfast when we resume serving them in the fall. Youth (Andy Lehman) We have sponsored a young man to attend St. Joseph s Youth Camp Council (Bill Bailey) The annual golf tournament will be Sep 14 this year at the 49ers Country Club. 40) Seriously consider doing pro-life work on a full-time basis. Training is available on how to raise your own support. Call Scott Klusendorf at 310-539-3932. 41) Do not use the terms going to be a mother (or father), expecting a child or a child on the way when speaking of pregnancy. The child is already there in the womb! This information was obtained from Priests For Life (www.priestsforlife.org). If you go to God with a thimble, you can only bring back a thimbleful. INSURANCE NIGHT The insurance night is scheduled for June 27 th. Art Cordova, our new Field Agent will be on hand to discuss the KC Insurance programs and answer any questions. 4
