Worship Service -- Lent ELW Holy Communion Setting Four PRELUDE ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. CHILDREN S CHURCH Children follow the leader for children s church. CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP 11 AM CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:8-9) Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. GATHERING SONG GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE See Announcement Page or Hymn Board

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray.

WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. FIRST READING: The word of the Lord. The assembly responds: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL The holy gospel according to: Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY See Announcement Page or Hymn Board

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION let us pray. Have mercy, O God. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

OFFERING Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. God our provider, you have not fed us with bread alone, but with words of grace and life. Bless us and these your gifts, which we receive from your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. WORDS OF INSTITUTION LORD S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Jesus is Lord and All are Welcome! Shepherd of the Sea s Seven Basic Premises Adopted by Church Council September 2011 Basic Premise #1 - The Church exists for those who are not yet members. Basic Premise #2 We welcome and accept people wherever they are in their faith journey, and trust God to take them where He wants them to be, and on His timetable. Basic Premise #3 - People want relationships, not religion. a. Authentic Christianity is a relationship, not a religion. b. They don t care what you know until they know that you care. c. Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they re always glad you came. Basic Premise #4 Positioning: We play to our strengths. We aren t interested in trying to be another church. We learn from others, but adapt what we like to our situation. There isn t one single way that works, or one size that fits all. Basic Premise #5 - Just because we ve always done things in a certain way is not, in and of itself, a sufficient reason for continuing to do it that way. God loves us just the way we are, but He doesn t expect us to stay that way. Basic Premise #6 God pays for what God orders. Basic Premise #7 With God, nothing is impossible. Together we are: Serving our Savior and Caring for All!

REFLECT ON THE CROSS AND ITS MEANING. He endured the cross for us. This preparation time is the season to focus on that meaning. Consider wearing a cross. As you put it on each day, remember that this is the price that Jesus paid for your sins. As you remove it each evening, be thankful for His sacrifice.
