Retired Members Club 2nd & 4th Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Editor: Jamie Jewer Publisher: John Nguyen Grand Knight s message As this is my second time around as your Grand Knight, I sincerely welcome all our new Executive Members we have a lot of work to do and I believe we all have the passion to carry it out. My first task is to thank our new Past Grand Knight Rick Collins and his Executives for a job well done during their time in office. Rick exemplified all that is good, in the Knights, as his honesty and integrity shone brightly all throughout his term. He is now our Past Grand Knight and has accepted roles in the kitchen and behind the bar, and also is a great help to me. With a new Executive, there will be, new committee chairpersons, and on that note I would like to thank Brother Dev Bhagwat, who was our Social Committee chair for his time and efforts, he has one more event and that is the December 5 th, St. Louis Choir recital, at our. A list of committees and their respective chairperson will be forthcoming to all soon. A list of all events scheduled between now and December 2014 will be listed in the Facility and Marketing Manager s report, on our website and in the Councillor Calendar. This issue covers the months of October, November, December, and January, so I wish all my Brother Knights and their families a Merry and Spiritual Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year. Spiritual Director s Message Dear Knights and friends, A test was done recently feeding cheesecake to rats. They loved it. Later the cheesecake was exchanged with good healthy rat food. The rats sniffed it, ignored it, and starved to death. The cheesecake is an image of our worldly pleasures and distractions: bodily appetites, possessions, technology, etc.. The average Canadian spends 8 hours a day on texting, cell phone, TV, computer, etc. They do not have 3 minutes a day to pray, or an hour a week to worship God on Sundays, because they are too focused on their cheesecake, and have no desire for any spiritual values right now. They are spiritually dead, like the dead rats. So the point is, to get them off of cheesecake, choose the Bread of Life, the Risen Christ, as their Lord and Saviour. the only thing available, the Bible and the Lives of the Saints. This changed his life. He would now start a new Army for Christ, the Jesuits, who were the main missionaries accompanying the explorers to the new world, America. Fr. Ray Reitzel, C.R. Chaplain That is why we have the Knights of Columbus, Cursillo weekend retreats, the Serrans who pray for Vocations, and many other groups, to keep us focused on Jesus, the Bread of Life, and to renew ourselves in Jesus Christ. Pope Francis is a breath of fresh air. With his example, and our example, and God s grace, we strive to get people off the cheese cake, to the Bread of Life. There is always hope. It took St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, 30 years of prayer, before he opened himself up to the light of Christ in his life. He became baptized, ordained a priest, and a Bishop. He wrote volumes on Philosophy and Theology. He prayed, Lord, why did I wait so long? and Lord, you have made me for Yourself. My heart is restless until it has found rest in You! Also St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, after a serious wound as a soldier in battle, spent months recuperating in a Catholic hospital. It was boring with no TV, ipad, etc., so he read 145 Dearborn Place, Waterloo, Ontario N2J 4N5 2 www.waterlooknightsofcolumbus.com

Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because Brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: Dev S. Bhagwat our insurance program. Fraternal Advisor This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good that our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. Fraternally yours, Dev S. Bhagwat Fraternal Advisior Phone:519-888-0869 Email:dev.bhagwat@kofc.org 145 Dearborn Place, Waterloo, Ontario N2J 4N5 4 www.waterlooknightsofcolumbus.com

Columbian Squires DO YOU KNOW A YOUNG MAN INTERESTED IN AN EPIC EXPLORATION? Someone who believes in having fun with good friends, and making a difference in the community? This is what the Columbian Squires is about. Providing the youth with an opportunity to achieve great things. We have a Squires Circle affiliated with our Council. WE ARE LOOKING TO GET OUR SQUIRES CIRCLE ACTIVE AGAIN! Our Worthy District Deputy (and PGK of our Council) Chris Kleisath has challenged us to make this happen. We have at least two young gentlemen that want to join our Circle and get it active. So, what s Involved in a Squires Circle? The Circle will meet once a month, on the first Monday, and the Circle has it s own Executive, with the guidance of at least two adults at all times. At their meetings, they will plan and participate in fun activities, learn about lots of different interesting topics (including their faith), and plan their activity schedule. Activities can include camping trips, volunteer efforts, educational outings, and more really, it s up to them and their Advisors (the Knights). So, the real question is: DO YOU KNOW A YOUNG MAN AGED 10 to 18 who may be interested? If so, we d like to talk to them and their parents about the program. Please have them call me at 519-884-6010 or email me at jamie[at]jewer.ca. (substitute the @ symbol) I m glad you asked Squires is a way for young Catholic men aged 10 to 18 to develop strong relationships with their peers, learn about leadership, volunteering, their faith, and so much more! 145 Dearborn Place, Waterloo, Ontario N2J 4N5 5 www.waterlooknightsofcolumbus.com
