From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, They say a healthy parish is always under construction. I want you to know of some things that are brewing here, some projects! 1. Our Lady Shrine Our Hispanic Community is leading the effort of building a shrine to the Blessed Mother, taking care of costs and construction. I m very thankful for this. We need an outdoor prayer space, and this will be wonderful!! I can t wait to dedicate the statue on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. 2. Fire Pit An Eagle Scout is starting the process of building us a fire pit! We have the blessing of the city fire marshal to move forward. We will be able to use the fire pit for many things. It will go on the greenspace, not far from the office building. go to our Trunk or Treat, and then go trick or treating in your own neighborhoods?? Double the candy! Children are welcome and encouraged to dress-up as their favor Saint for Mass and Trunk-or-Treat. All Souls Day is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it is a nice chance to pray for our deceased brothers and sisters. Check the Mass schedule. I think we will have some beautiful music at the 6:00 p.m. Mass. All Souls Day is one of my favorite days of the year. Reverse Raffle November 4th. BE THERE!!! My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Children s Mass Card 3. Green Space The green space is so beautiful!! Soon Noah s Ark will be installed, which everyone will love! You already have seen the new swing set. 4. Youth Room The Youth Group is working to convert the basement of the office building into a youth room. We need a space for when it will be cold out. Until now, our weekly meetings have been outside. 5. Bookshelves I need someone to build some shelves by the end of the month. Please talk to me if you can!! This is for our resource library. Dedication of the Cross Dedication of the Cross in St. Joseph School s Gym was celebrated last Sunday in honor of St. Joseph School s beloved secretary and parishioner, Debbi Gallagher. The Gallagher Family gathered to honor their adored wife and mother. 6. St. Vincent de Paul Society Please read Sr. Joan s column today!! We are SOOOOO EXCITED at the prospect of starting a St. Vincent de Paul Society here in Shelbyville. The need is here. Who better to meet the needs of the people than Jesus and his body the Church!?!? Please be a part of this. 7. Open Church Soon, once security systems are in place, our church will be open during the day all day. I pray that, before long, we can have adoration during the day so that someone is always in there praying. More on this later. A good many things going on! That is good. Please remember that All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Why not bring the kids to the 5:00 p.m. anticipation Mass on Halloween,

St. Vincent News Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, The greatest commandment is clear, You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart. The second commandment is also clear, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. What is not clear, perhaps, is what these commandments mean in our own lives. The implication of this Sunday s readings is that loving our neighbor means more than being kind to our friends and relatives, or the person who lives next door. Loving one s neighbor means doing right by any widow or orphan: seeing that the hungry are fed and the homeless sheltered, that the poor have their basic needs met, that the young are educated and the old are cared for. To do less is to fail in our love for neighbor. What I have just written is true, but very daunting. One person or one family cannot do it all alone. Each of us can do something. What I have learned in my 4 years in Shelbyville is that the poor do not have to go hungry. There are several places that help with food. St. Vincent s is one of them. But, in Shelbyville there is no place for the poor to get help with rent, utilities or furniture. Things that St. Vincent de Paul Societies help with. Fr. Mike and I have been wondering if there are people in our parishes that might be interested in becoming a part of such a group. I have done a little research on how to begin a Chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. What I have learned is that it is a Lay Organization for men and women. One of the main purposes is for the sanctification of its members. The other purpose is to help the poor. A person s heart changes when they meet poverty face to face. This week as you pray over this Sunday s readings, talk to Jesus about how you are to love your neighbor as yourself and if a St. Vincent de Paul Society may just be the way God is calling you to be of service to your neighbor. If you are so moved, please let Fr. Mike or me know you are interested in such a group. St. Vincent de Paul All Saints Day Mass All Saints Day Mass will be on November 1st at 6:30 p.m. This will be the only Mass at St. Vincent for this Holy Day of Obligation. Religious Education Classes St. Vincent Religious Education Classes will attend Mass at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1st for All Saints Day. New Ministry Schedules St. Vincent s Ministry Schedules for November through January are now available. Paper copies can be picked up just inside the front doors of St. Vincent Church. Advent Letters The season of Advent is just a few weeks away. We will be mailing our annual letter and calendar of services soon. If you know of someone who has been away from the Church or just might appreciate hearing from us, please contact Pat Barley at 765-265-7195 and we will add their name to our list. Praying the Rosary Please join us to pray the Rosary at St. Vincent Church on Wednesday, November 1st at 5:30 p.m. Sr. Joan Miller We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community. ---- St. Vincent Purpose Statement October 22, 2017 Sunday Collection: $ 4,455.00 Children Collection: $ 5.25 World Mission Sunday Collection: $ 581.00

St. Vincent News November Newsletter The November Newsletter is in the rack at each Church door. Please take one and pass one on to a friend or you may view it online at www.svdpcc.com. Thanksgiving Food Drive St. Vincent s Thanksgiving Food Drive will be Sunday, November 19th. Please share your blessings with those who have struggled this past year. One can of vegetables or a box of stuffing will go a long way. Helping your neighbor is a great way to thank God for his bounty. God bless all who have been so generous. Balance Today s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Today s Readings First Reading You shall not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in Egypt (Exodus 22:20-26). Psalm I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading You became imitators of the Lord, so that you became a model for all Believers (1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10). Gospel You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40). St. Joseph/St. Vincent News St. Joseph and St. Vincent Rite of Christian Initiation The next RCIA class will be on Monday, October 30th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent in the School Building.
