Kindergarten-2nd June 27-28, 2015 Genesis 12-21; Philippians 4:6 Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Abraham and Sarah God planned a rescue We re talking about how God started a family with Abraham and Sarah, so ask kids who s in their family. Be careful not to make any assumptions, though: their family might be blood relations or people they live with or care about. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, encourage them to show their parents their night/sand pictures. Today s story is all about how God started a family with a couple named Abraham and Sarah. It was part of his grand rescue plan and it s a family that everyone can now be a part of.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. FIND-YOUR-FAMILY GAME *This should be played in a Large Group. You can break kids into small groups to debrief after the relay. Before you begin, set markers at each table. Gather all the kids in one area of the room. Give each kid a cardstock image; tell them not to look at the image yet. Explain the rules of the Find-Your-Family game: o When you say Go find your family! they should look at the image. o Their job is to find all the other kids with same picture (there are 6 pictures). o When everybody has a group, they ve found their family! They should link arms and go to one of the boxes of markers at the table. o With arms linked, they all need to color their picture as fast as they can. (This is to make it extra challenging and silly, but you can just have kids color on their own if that s easier.) o Then return to the area where they re currently gathered, and sit. When kids have finished and are seated, combine families as necessary to create the correct number of small groups. Debrief: o Share names. o What is a family? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that God planned a rescue and (2) recognize that God started a family for the rescuer Why? Kids may not yet realize that God has a plan that s bigger than us. But we hope that as they get older, they ll learn to recognize that all the events in the Bible are connected. Tip: While kids color or create their night sky/sand pictures, talk to them about hearing from God. If they ve never heard from God, talk to them about how you hear from him. If they have, ask them what they do after he speaks to them. REVIEW THE STORY 1. How many kids did Abraham and Sarah have when God promised them a big family? 2. Do you think that would be hard to believe that God would keep his promise? Why or why not? 3. How did God keep his promise? 4. Why did God start a family? 5. How can we be part of Abraham and Sarah s family? (Hint: that s the same as being part of God s family!) DIG DEEPER ASK: Which two pictures did God show Abraham to help him understand God s plan? (sand/dust and stars) Give each kid a piece of black construction paper. Have them fold it in half. On one half, have them poke holes with a toothpick. Hold it above your head and look at the light coming through like stars. On the other half, let kids use gluesticks to add a strip of sandpaper. As kids work, ask: Has God ever shown you a picture or told you something? What was it? *Pray together, thanking God that he planned a rescue and that it includes us! Give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, practice the verse using the motions from Large Group (on the following page):

2 Philippians 4:6 (hold up 4 fingers; hold up 6 fingers) Don t worry about anything; (shake your head and your finger back and forth) instead, pray about everything. (fold hands in prayer) Tell God what you need, (point up) and thank him for all he has done. (spread your hands wide)

1 While we re focusing on God s plan, one really cool part of today s story is about how God showed Abraham and Sarah pictures to demonstrate his plan. Make sure to leave time at the end for kids to ask God to speak to them, too! You have the option of doing hand motions with the verse today if you have time. Choose the option that s best for your group! *Click to play intro music Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you here. The game you guys played looked really fun. I want to hear about it! What kind of groups were you guys getting into? (Let a kid respond.) Yes, into families. The other people who had the same picture as you were in your family, weren t they? And who can tell me what a family is? (Let a couple kids respond.) Yes, it s a group of people who are maybe related by blood or maybe they live together. Maybe they just love each other a lot and stick up for each other! And just like you guys were grouped into families, the world full of people is grouped into families too. SCIENCE INTRO You know, it s a little like today s science experiment. Raise your hand if you know what happens if you drop Mentos mints into a bottle of diet coke. (Let kids respond.) Yep, it explodes (click to play the slow motion video but continue talking). Soda goes everywhere! But we re going to watch some guys turn an exploding bottle of soda into delicious drinks. As you watch, see if you can figure out how they did it. Video: Soda Dispenser How d they keep the soda from exploding? (Let kids respond.) That s right! They had a PLAN for it. They showed the soda where to go by putting pipes on the bottle of Diet Coke. GOD HAD A PLAN Well, remember how God made the world perfect? But then, the first two people, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. With that wrong choice, all the wrong things in the world began. It

was like the world was out of control, like the Diet Coke bottle that was exploding everywhere. But God loved Adam and Eve and he loves us! WAY too much to leave us in a world full of wrong things. He had a PLAN for us. It would take some time, but it would be a great rescue to save us from all the wrong things in the world. GOD PROMISES TO START A FAMILY God started his plan by building a family. He chose a guy named Abraham and his wife Sarah to be the first two people in this family. He told them they would be the father and mother of many, many people so many people that they wouldn t be able to count them. But when God first promised them this special family, how many kids do you guys think they had? Just 1 or 2? Show me with your fingers how many kids you think they had. (Let kids guess by holding up any number of fingers). Great guesses! Raise your hand if you said, Zero. (Let kids raise hands.) Yep, they had NO kids at all. And they were getting pretty old. So God gave them two pictures to show them his plan for their family. One was a starry sky (click to show picture). We re going to count these stars. Everybody, stand up and gather round! (Let kids stand.) When you re done counting, sit back down. (After a few seconds, continue): OK, go ahead and sit. (Let kids sit.) We d never get done counting, would we?! Well, at least not for awhile. While Abraham was waiting for Isaac, God asked him to look at the night sky, like this. Then God said his family was going to have MORE people than the number of stars. That s a LOT of people. God gave Abraham and Sarah another picture too. (Hold up the container of sand.) Does anyone think they can count this? (Let 1 or 2 kids try.) It s hard, right? And this is just one teeny tiny container. God told Abraham and Sarah that their family would have more people than the pieces of dust on the ground. GOD STARTS A FAMILY So now, we re going to watch a story about what happened. As you watch, see if you can figure out how God kept his promise to give them a special family. Video: KBS / Abraham and Sarah Wow, so how did God keep his promise to Abraham and Sarah? (Let kids respond.) Yes, God gave them a son named Isaac. They were really old when he was born, but Isaac would have kids who had kids who had kids and on and on and on and ON, until the family was huge, just like God promised. Then one day, the rescuer would be born into it! Even though Abraham and Sarah had to wait a LONG time and they never got to meet the rescuer or even see how big the family got God kept his promise to them. And they trusted that he had a plan.

GOD S WANTS ALL OF US TO BE IN HIS FAMILY The good news is, even when Abraham and Sarah didn t understand God s rescue or exactly how it would happen, did they need to worry? (Let kids say: no.) No, because God had a plan! God built a special family, and who was eventually born into it? (Let kids say: the rescuer or Jesus.) Yes, it was the rescuer s family, which means it s God s family. And now, anybody who wants to follow Jesus gets to be part of God s family! You know, Abraham and Sarah could have been really worried when they waited so long for Isaac. And sometimes things happen to us that make us worried or afraid, too. We might wonder if God has a plan or if God can really help us with something. So let s say our verse out loud again: SLIDE: Philippians 4:6 Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Now, we ve got some kids who are going to help us remember it by playing a game called Verse O Dome. In this game, kids get the verse right or get a PIE in the face! As you watch some kids try to remember the verse, see if you can remember it too! Video: Verse O Dome: Philippians 4:6 Awesome! Can you guys say that again, too? (Click to show verse.) Great job! PRAY Great job! Now let s take some time and thank God for his rescue plan. Ask him if there s anything he wants to say to you today or any picture he wants to show you. Or ask him to remind you of one of his promises. (Lead the kids in prayer, but give them about a minute of silence that s between them and God. Then wrap up and thank God for having a plan to rescue us.) WORSHIP Remember, one way we can thank God is by singing to him in worship. Everybody stand up and let s sing two songs to God! One is all about shouting, dancing and singing to God! The next is a reminder of how much Jesus loves us! Song: Dance Shout and Sing Music Video: Jesus Loves Me *Dismiss kids to small groups
