Please stop in the Parish Office and pick up a registration form. Merici Chapel Two years ago I received a book at Christmas and now it is a treasured gift Real People, Real Presence, Ordinary Catholics on the Extraordinary Power of the Eucharist, written by Cardinal William H. Keeler, published by The Word Among Us Press. This year, consider giving someone this meaningful gift on Christmas. ~ Regina *Stop in the Parish Office for a copy of "A Walk Through the Mass." This is the First Sunday of Advent, the number one day of a New Year in the Church s liturgical life. During this 2017 Advent season, we will pay special attention to the Mass itself. There is an insert in this bulletin entitled A Walk Through the Mass. * It gives us some background on the Mass, its history and meaning, and some suggestions to help us understand a little better what it is we do here from week-to-week. The author reflects on the importance of ritual in our lives; he tells us that, in the Mass, we touch upon the very heart of the Paschal Mystery (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday); and that every Mass, like every significant meal, consists of gathering, storytelling, meal sharing, and commissioning. Please take that insert home with you, read it over, and discuss it. Perhaps you could hand it on to family or to friends who might benefit. This Friday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and a holyday of obligation. For your convenience, there will be two Vigil Masses on Thursday, December 7, at 4:00 and 7:00pm. Masses on the Friday, December 8, holyday will be at 7:00am, 8:30am, and 7:00pm. Under the title of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Mother is patroness of the United States. The first ceiling saint on the left, nearest the sanctuary, is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. And what are the colors of that painting? Why, red, white, and blue of course! This Wednesday, December 6, St Nicholas Day, our day school junior high students will have a field trip to St Mary Seminary, our diocesan school of theology for priesthood students. St Charles parishioner Ian Kelly is in his first year of theology studies there and St Charles parishioner Jason Keller is a third year student at Borromeo Seminary attending classes at John Carroll University. I am sure that there are other St Charles parishioners who have considered the priesthood. If you are one of them, have a chat with one of us parish priests. Next Saturday, December 9, our PCRF and day school second graders will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. They have been well-prepared for this day. How long has it been since you made a good confession? There are five confessionals/reconciliation rooms in our church; each one has the option for the penitent to choose anonymous or face-to-face. The two side-by-side confessionals facing Wilber Avenue have recently been renovated and upgraded, thanks to the generosity of St Charles Ladies Guild. Please remember to purchase your weekly gas and groceries and do your holiday shopping with St Charles Gift Cards. Just stop by the Parish Office. There was a wealth of information in last week s bulletin about our 2017 Advent Giving Tree. That information can also be found on the church bulletin boards. This year we are helping the Open Door Re-entry Program (for those recently released from confinement), Providence House (emergency shelter for children, newborn to age five), West Side Catholic Center (caring for those in need of food, clothing, and shelter), and Malachi House (hospice for the dying homeless). Check the Wish Lists. Select your gift and place it before the BVM or Holy Family Shrines in church. All gifts will be collected, sorted, and delivered at 1:00pm on Sunday, December 17.
