St. Teresa of Avila Church Page 2 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 22, 2009 It is I, I, who wipe out,for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. Isaiah 43:25 FORGIVEN The people of Israel, even in New Testament times, thought of God in a very personal, intimate, and relationship-oriented manner. In our modern times, we have inherited categories about God from Greek philosophy: God as all-knowing, all-powerful, all-present. Not that God isn t these things, but if we think of God primarily that way, when we get to the end of Isaiah today ( your sins I remember no more ), we are a bit confounded. How can an allknowing God forget anything? Isaiah s listeners would have been more inclined to rejoice at what a wonderful, loving relationship God had with them. God who had the power to forgive their sins forgave sins, and then completely forgot them! Jesus, in today s Gospel, is also more interested in the paralyzed man knowing that wonderful, loving, healing presence of God than he is in satisfying the scribes pre-conceived notions about God. How often it is we, not God, who remain paralyzed by our past sinfulness, even when we have been forgiven by God and reconciled with others. Let us, instead, give God glory by picking ourselves up from our paralyzed past, and journey on as disciples of Jesus. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time Page 3 Dear Fellow Parishioners: On Ash Wednesday the Sacred Liturgy proclaims gather the assembly and at the same time go to your room and pray in private. As Catholics we are called to public and private prayer. On behalf of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community, I am inviting you to celebrate this spiritual journey towards Easter with Christ. In our Catholic faith, we have Lenten traditions that have been handed down from one generation to another. These traditions have always brought us closer to God and to our Church. After 9/11 in 2001, I can remember leaving the Church doors open from early morning until late in the evenings. People kept dropping by in great numbers and they appreciated the Church being left open. In these tough times it is my hope and prayer that, for Lent and beyond, we can drop by our parish Church for a special visit with the Lord. Lent is our desert experience for forty days with Christ. When anyone is joined to Christ, He is a new being; The old is gone, the new has come (2 Cor 5:17) Give yourself to the Lord; Trust in Him, and He will help you. (Psalm 37:5) Daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, Fast and Abstinence are my earliest memories of Lent. Besides our own parish programs, the Ecumenical Services are always part of St. Teresa s tradition. Let us join our fellow Christians in prayer and song for Lent. God Bless, Fr. Mike SOME OF OUR CATHOLIC TRADITIONS ARE: A) Mass, and ashes distributed on Ash Wednesday B) Daily Mass for all the days of Lent C) Special study and reading of the Bible D) Family & private recitation of the Rosary E) A Lenten retreat at a retreat house or a private retreat at a quiet location of ones choice F) Greater fasting and alms giving G) Giving up something we like to increase self discipline, becoming less selfish H) Go to confession and be reconciled with God, family, friends and neighbors I) Become a volunteer - make a new beginning J) Attend Holy Week ceremonies
