Spanish American War), md Rilla (Willams) Anderson, d. 21 July 1945, age 73 yrs. The funeral services for Robert A Anderson, a Spanish American War veteran, were conducted by his war comrade, Edgar Nunally, at the home of his son, Dover Anderson, in Silver Point, Thursday afternoon, Feb 20 and his body was laid to rest in the Christian Cemetery at that place. He was born near Silver Point, Putnam County, TN on August 7, 1871, and died at the Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Texas on Saturday, Feb 15, 1930 of paralysis brought on by high blood pressure. He was found stricken in Highland Park and was never able to speak afterwards. He was the son of Tom Anderson, deceased, a veteran of the Union Army of the Civil War. He was married to Miss Rillar Williams in young manhood. To them, four children were born. All survive, with their mother. The daughters are Mrs. Hattie Moore of Dallas, TX; Mrs. Nettie Burrow of Trenton, TX; and Mrs Pauline Moore of Cochran, TX. He had one son, Dover Anderson, of Silver Point. All of his children were present at the funeral. When the war with Spain was declared, he volunteered his services and joined Company F, First Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. Captain A C Gilliam was his company commander until he was succeeded by Captain James K Polk. The company was mustered into the United States service on May 15, 1898, having previously enrolled in the National Guard. He was enrolled in the National Guard on April 26, 1898. He was discharged when the regiment was mustered out at San Francisco November 23, 1899. He made a good record as a soldier. He fought in the battle at Manila, Paco district, February 5, 6, taking of Iloile, Feb 11, expedition to Oton April 8, 1899, skirmishes at La Paz Aug 15 1899, same place Sept 15, battle of Cebu mountains on Cebu Island, Sept 21, 1899, besides many similar skirmishes. After the war he returned to his native state where he engaged in farming. He had spent the past two years in Texas where he hoped to regain his health. He took special treatment at Hot Springs, Ark., and thought he was greatly improved. NEGLECTED CEMETERY FOR VETERANS TO BE RESTORED by Amye Wright Herald Citizen, Cookeville, TN 19 September 2011 SILVER POINT Inside of a wrought iron gate, under a large grove of trees lies the Christian Cemetery also known as Pine Grove Cemetery. That cemetery has been neglected for some time and some locals are planning to do something about it on Oct. 15. Through her research, local genealogist Joyce Maynard was able to trace her husband's great grandfather and great great grandfather to the cemetery. When they visited the site they were shocked by what they saw. Limbs are scattered all over the site and the property is overgrown. (Ed Butler, 1st Lt. of the Dillard Judd Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, discusses plans to clean up the longneglected Christian Cemetery with Joyce Maynard, Ronald Maynard Jr. and Ronald Maynard Sr. Herald Citizen Photo/Ty Kernea) "The place is just a mess," Maynard said. She's unsure of what happened to the original caretakers of the cemetery but she is sure of one thing the cemetery will be cleaned up. Of the graves that are marked, many are simply sandstone slabs with no inscription. Other graves are identifiable only by sunken areas the size and shape of a burial plot. Marked graves reveal that at least four Confederate veterans, one veteran of the Spanish American War and one World War II veteran are buried there. Other marked graves include the family names of Anderson, Austin, Bandy, Bennet, Bussell, Christian, Hamilton, Maynard, Prentice, Smith, Whitehead and Williams. The small group is attempting to reach out to the descendants of those interred. "It really needs to be cleaned up because it's just terrible," Maynard said. Ed Butler, 1st Lt. of the Dillard Judd Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, will be leading the cleanup efforts along with the SCV. "I just hate to see a cemetery grow up," Butler said. At one point, cows were able to enter the cemetery where they knocked over headstones. An old barbed wire fence surrounds the property but Butler believes that the cows were able to break through to gain access to the cemetery.

"That's just wrong," Butler said. The clean up group is planning to make repairs to some of the toppled markers but some are so damaged by the elements that the inscriptions are nearly impossible to decipher. The group is also in need of a few volunteers experienced with the operation of chain saws and weed eaters with saw blades. To get to the cemetery, take I 40 west to Silver Point exit. Turn left on Highway 56 toward Smithville. After crossing the railroad tracks, turn left on Old Baxter Road and travel approximately one half mile to a double brick entryway with wrought iron gates with a white fence on either side. The cemetery is located in a large grove of trees approximately 25 yards inside the entrance. For more information about the cemetery or the individuals interred there contact Joyce Maynard at 526 1558 or 979 5257. Anyone interested in helping clean up the cemetery or memorial services at the cemetery can contact Ed Butler at 544 2002 for more information. The clean up will take place Oct. 15. "The SCV is always ready, willing and able... to clean up old cemeteries," Butler said. Herald Citizen, Cookeville, TN: 18 September 2011
