A note from Father Richard: THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST: Over the past two Sundays, we have celebrated the solemnities of Pentecost and the Most Holy Trinity. Today we celebrate a third solemnity: the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. These three Sundays serve as a bridge between the end of the Easter season and the long stretch of ordinary time that runs throughout the summer and fall to the close of the church year. The readings for today offer some insights into the mystery of how the body and blood of Christ offer salvation to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, we are able to unite our entire being body and soul to Christ. Unlike other prophets, Jesus made very bold claims about reaching spiritual fulfillment, and one of them involved receiving him in the Eucharist: I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. We thus have a choice to make. Will we eat this living bread? Will we really allow Jesus to become part of us? If we answer yes, then we partake of true Communion we enter into a profound union with the Lord. May God grant us the faith to recognize the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. THE MASS: It has gone by many names over the centuries: the Breaking of the Bread, the Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy, the Unbloodied Sacrifice, the Mystical Supper of the Lamb, and many more. Any title falls short of capturing what is the source and summit of Christian faith. And yet, every title contributes to deepening our entry into this greatest Mystery of our faith. The Mass: this simplest title most likely derives from the sending forth in Latin: Ite MISSA est ( Go forth, the Mass is ended ; or, more literally, Go, She (the Church) has been sent ). The Mass is our greatest prayer because it is the prayer of Christ in his Paschal Mystery, in his supreme response to the Father, which includes his own going forth to the right hand of God. The ritual that clothes the Mass both invites and disposes the baptized to join in Christ s response of offering, sacrifice, blessing and praise. From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops THE EUCHARISTIC LITURGY: from The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, D.C. The Eucharist is the sign and cause of our communion with God and our unity as the People of God. In the Eucharist, we unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and with one another. Together transformed, we are then sent forth to fulfill God s will in our daily lives (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], nos. 1325-26, 1332). In this way, the Eucharistic Liturgy is social in nature. It is the celebration through which God draws us into communion with himself and with others, forming and transforming us to live as the Body of Christ in the world. GATHERING: The gathering for worship and the Introductory Rites emphasize our coming together as a community. From our individual lives and situations, we gather as one family. At the entrance song, we raise our voices in a united chorus. The ordained minister leads us in the Sign of the Cross, which recalls the Trinity s divine communion of persons and to which we respond with one communal voice. As we make the Sign of the Cross, we turn to God, opening ourselves to his transforming presence. PENITENTIAL ACT : During the Penitential Act, we acknowledge the sin that affects our relationship with God, ourselves, others, and the world around us. We seek Christ s healing love and forgiveness in order that we might be transformed both as individuals and as a community, into a people of love. During the Confiteor, we ask the members of our heavenly community, blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and our brothers and sisters around us to pray for us, and we for them. LITURGY OF THE WORD: At this time, we hear a proclamation of God s wonderful works in the history of salvation (Pope Paul VI, Sacrosanctum Concilium [Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy], no. 35). Through the Scriptures, we also receive teaching, correction, and training in righteousness (2 Tm 3:16). We are guided and instructed in faith and in how to live in right relationship with God, others, ourselves, and creation. UNIVERSAL PRAYER OR PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL: As Pope St. John Paul II wrote, The Prayer of the Faithful responds not only to the needs of the particular Christian community but also to those of all humanity, and the Church makes her own the joys and hopes, the sorrows and anxieties of people today, especially of the poor and all those who suffer (Dies Domini [On Keeping the Lord s Day Holy], no. 38). RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS: We shall be starting our RCIA program in September. If you know of anyone who would like to become Catholic, who needs the sacraments of Holy Eucharist or Confirmation, please call the Parish Office. PEOPLE ON CHURCH PROPERTY ASKING FOR MONEY: From time to time there are people in the church parking lot asking for money. They have good stories, sometimes some very sad stories. Some of the stories may be true and some may not. We would ask that you do not give them any money. Tell them to see one of the Friars we do have funds that can be used for this purpose. The outreach collection that we have a few times a year is for this purpose. Again, please do not give them any money. Some of these people are known to us, some go from parish to parish. Thank you.
