October 2017 News From Lt Fred L. Kent VFW Post 7907 Poway, CA From the Commander Comrades, In this Issue From the Commander 1 From the Auxiliary President 2 From the Post Chaplain 2 Happy 242 nd Birthday Well summer is over and we are getting ready to celebrate the 60 th Anniversary of Post 7907. That s right, 60 years!!! On 12 October, a Thursday, we will observe the anniversary of the founding of our Post. Bill Kimble is trying to get a couple of food trucks for Friday 13 October for the evening and Karen is trying to get a band for the continuation of our celebration and membership drive. We will have a cake and a membership drive. Come on out and help us celebrate and invite any prospective members. Comrades, the Post Canteen really needs your support. On Monday nights there is a chef who prepares a variety of bar food for the football game. We are open to suggestions for events, meals or anything to attract members to come out and support OUR Canteen. Finally a special THANK YOU to Jim Chiefer Forrest, Bill Kimble and Robert Fenter for their quick response in fixing the leak in our main water line. Without that repair, we would have had to shut down. Again, Thank you. October 13, 2017 I hope to see ALL of you at the Post soon. From the Auxiliary President Hello Everyone, The VFW hosted its first Poway Chamber Mixer on September 28 th to promote the VFW and veteran organizations to local businesses in the community. A big thank you to the Auxiliary & VFW members for preparing the food and organizing the event with the Chamber and Post. Another thank you is owed to VFW members Red, Ed Lapating, Bill Kimble, Dave Grosch and Auxiliary members Jim Gordon, Karen Kimble, Robert Fenter for their hard work on Saturday power washing the Post and cleaning up the leaves & trash around the property, awesome job. Also the VFW main water line broke and was repaired at no cost to the Post by Robert Fenter of All Weather Heating & Plumbing and Bill Kimble of Kimble Heating & Air Conditioning, so please thank them and keep them in mind if you ever need work at your home. Last but certainly not least, there is an upcoming event at the VFW on Friday October 13 th ; the Kimble s 60 th Anniversary Celebration is happening in the evening with food, music and good company. Please stop by to enjoy the festivities. Thanks again to all the volunteers at the Post, Alex Grosch Join us at the Post for the 2017-2018 Football Season Monday Nights will include a delicious variety of munchies for a $5.00 donation. Menu will be posted in the Canteen each week. "Happy Hour" prices during the games. Aztec Football included Come on over and enjoy some good grub and great friends to party with. From the Post Chaplain Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the instruction of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And besides, there were added to them many similar words. Jeremiah 36:32 Judgment came against Jehoiakim not simply because he acted foolishly in burning the Scriptures but because of the condition of heart which that action revealed. This is given to us in one flaming sentence in verse 24: Yet neither the king, nor any of his servants who heard all these words, was afraid, nor did they rend their garments. These men had lost the fear of God. And when a nation or a people or an individual loses the fear of God, they are on their way to destruction. For the fear of God is based upon the sovereign power which he exercises in life. God rules in the affairs of men. Napoleon, at the height of his career, once very boldly said, God is on the side that has the heaviest artillery his cynical answer to someone who asked if God was on the side of France. Then came the Battle of Waterloo, where he lost both the battle and his empire. Years later, in exile on the island of St. Helena, chastened and humbled, Napoleon said, Man proposes; God disposes. Our Father, these words sober me. I pray that I will not point the finger of self-righteousness at others, but rather will acknowledge the times I have not shown You the fear worthy of Your name. Amen. Semper Fi, Gunner This month's dinner winners are Flo Larson and Skip & Petra. 2 The Patriot October 2017

We were Supported VFW Ship 1774 with their retirement of 150 flags at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. The Honor Guards assigned were SrA Sam LaManna, and Gunner Vaineharrison. Mike, Sam s brother, joined us as well. Additionally, we conducted our quarterly meeting at the Post and conducted a flag history, POW/MIA Remembrance and etiquette class for Trail life. Honor Guards assigned were SrA Sam LaManna, and Gunner Vaineharrison. The Joint Honor Guard (JHG) is an all-volunteer group composed of Veterans and Citizens in Poway. Our primary mission is to honor the Veterans of the community of Poway by providing, when able, a rifle salute during their final honors. The Joint Honor Guard is still looking for volunteers. If you feel this is something you are called to do, please contact the Joint Honor Guard Adjutant at JHG7907@aol.com. Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you. They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God. 3 John 1:5-6 The Patriot October 2017 3

Joining the Detail where 58 volunteers including VFW Commander Bob Parks, VFW Members Mike Medberry, Dave Rangel, Gilbert Ramirez, VFW Auxiliary Member Robert Fenter, VFW Auxiliary Ship 1774 President Jerrie Thompson, Cadets from Paloma Valley NJROTC and Cadets from Westview NJROTC. American Legion Breakfast Sunday, October 15th 17 th Anniversary of Attack on USS Cole (DDG-67) Location: VFW Building 12342 Old Pomerado Road Poway, CA 92064 Time: 9:00 11:00 AM Donations: $9.00 Menu: Tri-tip Eggs Toast Hash Browns OJ & Coffee Youth Activities All around the globe, in every time zone, students gathered on 27 September at their flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, families, churches, and communities. For over 25 years, See You at the Pole (SYATP) has been about one simple act - prayer - students uniting themselves in prayer before God interceding for their generation. On 12 October 2000, Cole was the target of a terrorist attack carried out by Al-Qaeda in the Yemeni port of Aden, when two suicide bombers detonated their small boat near the warship, killing 17 sailors, including San Diego High School graduate, Lakiba Nicole Palmer, injuring 39 others, and damaging the ship. Lakiba was one of two women to become the first ever killed in an attack on a U.S. warship since women began serving aboard combat vessels. On Thursday, October 12, 2017, 10:00 am, at Mount Hope Cemetery on Market Street, the 1st District will conduct the Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony to honor her sacrifice. The VFW and American Legion joined Trail Life Troop CA-37:23 around the flag pole in prayer at Poway s Veteran Park. Seaman Lakiba Nicole Palmer All Gave Some. Some Gave All.
