Grand Knights Corner My brother Knights, During this Lenten Season it is exciting and gracious to share the suffering and passion of Christ our King together. I was totally happy to see how we all came together for Valentine s Family Dinner. There was love in the air and wonderful eating and sharing. This 2017 Lenten season we will be making big strides, especially with the upcoming election on our certificate of deposit. God has selected us to be servants and leaders of our families and community. During this cold weather season we have held strong and done our duty. We have had good participation and involvement. Lets work hard on selling our state tickets so we may show a high volume and win, Best in the State! we can win up to $1000 dollars for our council. God Bless Council #804! CULTURE OF LIFE Pro-Life Director: Ralph Padilla Lenten Pro-life Prayer Father of all mercy, We thank you for this season of grace and light. We know that sin has blinded us. Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance. Since you, O God, are light itself, Give all your people a clearer understanding Of what is sin, and what is virtue. Grant in particular that we may see, as never before, The profound dignity of every human life, Including the vulnerable unborn children. Give us grace to defend Our brothers and sisters in the womb By our prayers, our words, And our self-sacrificing actions. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen FAMILY NIGHT! St. Patricks Day Buffet! Blessed Sacrament Chapel (OLOS) M- F 1pm-5pm/ 1 st Sat. 9am-5pm The Foundations of Lent The Foundations of Lent. What is Lent? Lent is a season of the Christian Year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting in order to grow closer to God. When is Lent? It's the forty days before Easter.Lent begins with Ash The Foundations of Lent (cont.) Wednesday. This year it's from March 1(Ash Wednesday) to April 16 (Easter), 2017.The beginning of Lent is Ash Wednesday? Yes. Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras, usually begins with a service where we recognize our mortality, repent of our sins, and return to our loving God. We may make resolutions and commit to change our lives over the next forty days so that we might be more like Christ. In an Ash Wednesday service, usually a minister or priest marks the sign of the cross on a person's forehead with ashes. Why ashes? In Jewish and Christian history, ashes are a sign of mortality and repentance. Mortality, because when we die, our bodies eventually decompose and we become dust/dirt/ash/whatever. While the ashes remind us of our mortality and sin, the cross reminds us of Jesus' resurrection (life after death) and forgiveness. As told in Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was sent into the wilderness by the Spirit, Where he fasted and prayed for 40 days. During his time there he was tempted by Satan and found clarity and strength to resist temptation. Catholics have traditionally expressed sorrow for sins and the desire to live as disciples of Christ through the three traditional Lenten disciples of fasting, almsgiving and prayer which help us to turn toward Christ. From daily mass to the rosary to the stations of the cross to Eucharist adoration the church encourages a wealth of prayerful practices. Just as we fast without starving ourselves, so we give alms without jeopardizing our security or that of our family.fasting and Abstinence.Ages 18-59 are required to fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Holy Friday and all Fridays during lent. Abstinence from meat is required of anyone 14 or older.
