Archdiocese of Detroit St. John s Deaf Center Our Lady of Loretto West Detroit Catholic Deaf Catholic Deaf Newsletter Volume 38 Issue 1 www.sjdc-oll.org January 2019 Dear Friends, Happy New Year! I hope you had a nice Christmas with your loved ones. I pray that 2019 will bring many of God s blessings to you and your family. Many thanks to all for helping us celebrate Christmas well. The Christmas party at Holy Innocents was wonderful, and people enjoyed their Christmas tea party at Our Lady of Loretto. Cindy Landino did a good job collecting money for Christmas flowers at Holy Innocents. OLL volunteers did a nice job decorating the Christmas tree and the chapel. St. John s Deaf Center volunteers did Christmas decorations and prepared a delicious meal for Senior Citizens on December 18 th. The readers practiced well for the readings on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Why did we do all these things? We did this out of our love for Jesus Christ whose birthday was Christmas Day! I am sure Jesus says Thank you! to all of you who volunteered in different ways to make this holy season a special one! From January 10 to 14, Annmarie and I will be in Fort Worth, Texas, for the National Catholic Office for the Deaf s Pastoral Week. It has been a while since I last went there, and I look forward to going again. Why? For a few reasons: 1. To learn more about how we can serve the Deaf Catholics; 2. to see old friends who work with Deaf Catholics in this country and Canada; 3. to make new friends! I also like going to the Pastoral Week because that gives me an opportunity to figure out who we could invite to lead a retreat for our community. As mentioned in the past few newsletters, we will have Sr. Maureen Langton giving us a retreat on March 22-24 at De Sales Center. Sr. Maureen is the ONLY DEAF sister in the United States! There are no other Deaf sisters in this country, except her! She was the founder of Ministry Formation Program in Chicago where Michelle Kulpa, Beth Ann Aylesworth, John Snook, and Dan Gibbs were students. As a Deaf person herself, she understands many issues and experiences facing Deaf Catholics. I hope you will go to this retreat! You will learn much about God and our Catholic faith from her. For more information, please see me or Annmarie. We have several members of our Catholic Deaf community who are in the nursing home or assistive centers. They will be thrilled to get a card from you. Jesus teaches that whatever we do to other people, we are doing to Him. Why? Jesus is in each person. If you need an address for you to send a card to someone who is in nursing or assistive home, please see me or Annmarie. Once again, I wish you all the best in 2019 with God s blessings, Yours in Christ, Fr. MD Fr. Michael A. Depcik, OSFS www.fmd.org Fr. Michael Depcik

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (January 4th) Talk to Us In every disappointment, let your heart fly directly to your dear Savior. Jesus will never leave you or forsake (turn away from) you Fiat! Reflection Peace be with you! As the Christmas season ends and Ordinary Time returns, there are several feast days in the Church that help us remember how wonderful LIFE is. On January 1st, we celebrate the truth: Mary is the Mother of God! Jesus is Mary s Son, and Jesus is God! Jesus, the little baby we celebrated at Christmas is God! Each human LIFE is a gift from God. On January 13th, we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. In Baptism, God forgives our sins. Jesus is perfect. He had no sin. But, Jesus is humble and shows us how to come before God the Father and receive mercy. When you and I were baptized, each time a tiny child is baptized, God adopts us into His family. We become children of God. Each human LIFE is destined to be a child of God and live with God forever! On January 22nd, the Catholic Church in the United States has a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Fortysix years ago on January 22nd, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that abortion was legal. As Catholic Christians, we believe that God creates each and every human LIFE. As Catholic Christians, we believe that each human LIFE is holy, and we need to protect and cherish each human LIFE. nd Around the country close to January 22, people will be supporting LIFE by public displays: marches, presentations, prayers, and signs. I encourage you to join and pray for all human LIFE to be protected. Jesus came as a tiny baby. Each human LIFE is holy! Each human LIFE is meant for LOVE with God forever! Catholic 101 Class by Fr. Mike Depcik OLL-WDCD adoration is at 5:45pm and class is at 7pm on Tuesday, January 15th. SJDC adoration is at 5:45pm and class is at 7pm on Wednesday, January 16th DTE Energy Program Winter is coming and are you warm? DTE offer several programs to help customers with paying their energy bills. If you are behind on your bill, please call 800-477-4747 before your service shut off. There are several programs but two programs are important. 1. Shut off Protection Plan (SPP):This is a payment program to help low income customers year round and senior citizens during the space heating season. The plan helps eligible customers manage the outstanding balance on their account and provides protection from a shut off if monthly payments are made regularly. You must pay a down payment to enroll. You have the flexibility in making your monthly payments on any date of your choice, as long as it s paid by the next bill. 2. Winter Protection Plan (WPP): This program help prevent service shut off and high utility payments during heating season (Nov 1March 31) every year for low income customers and seniors (age 62 and up) regardless of income. During this period, customers must pay a budgeted amount. Senior who have had service shut off for non-payment before applying for WPP will have their services restored without any payments. Although no specific payments are required during the heating season, seniors are encouraged to pay something to avoid large payments when the protection period ends. I will be happy to help answer questions. Contact me at 586-200-1172 or see me in Tuesday s at St John Deaf Center. Annmarie Kowalczyk Liturgy of the Word for Children on Sunday, January 20th and 27th at 11:30am in Holy Innocents Church. Peace, Kathleen Mitchell Kathleen Mitchell
