WELCOME LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR Members of the Little Sisters of the Poor will be at St. Mary this weekend, August 23-24. Founded by St. Jean Jugan in France, the sisters work with the elderly poor, including a home in Chicago and one in Palatine. There will be a second collection at the weekend Masses in support of their work. Please note that there is not an envelope for this collection in your packet. Please join me in supporting the Little Sisters of The Poor. FATHER BRENDAN GUILFOIL As the pace of parish life increases as we move toward September, I am reminding people that Father Brendan Guilfoil is now serving full-time at our parish. His responsibilities include the RCIA program, working with the school and religious education program, and facilitating requests for weddings at St. Mary. Father Brendan will continue our practice of a priest from St. Mary offering Mass monthly at three local residences: Westmoreland and Lake Forest Place in Lake Forest and Claridge in Lake Bluff. I encourage parishioners to contact Father Brendan for spiritual and sacramental assistance. Father Brendan can be reached at the parish telephone number 847.234.0205 or at: bguilfoil@churchofstmary.org. FATHER RON STAKE Since the beginning of July, Father Ron Stake has been at St. Mary acting as a part-time Associate Pastor (He works for the Archdiocese of Chicago Monday through Wednesday and at St. Mary Thursday through Sunday). I encourage you to read his letter of introduction in this week's bulletin. He has an interesting background as a civil lawyer, canon lawyer and chaplain in the United States Navy. In addition to the usual ministry of a priest at St. Mary, Father Stake will also develop ministries with Catholic attorneys and members of the armed services. Father Stake will also reach out to Catholics who would benefit from pursuing a declaration of nullity for a previous marriage that ended in divorce. This could open a path for Catholics who married outside the Catholic Church to have their marriages blessed. Please see Father Stake's letter for more information. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL The School of St. Mary begins classes on Monday, August 25. We have approximately 560 students registered for the new academic year. Please be careful when driving on the campus when school is in session; there are many children here for activities before and after school, so please be very careful when entering or exiting the parking lots. Thank you. NEW EMAIL ADDRESS The Archdiocese of Chicago is directing all priests and staff to refrain from using any personal accounts for communication with parishioners. Rather, we are to use either a parish account or our account with the Archdiocese of Chicago. So I am asking parishioners to contact me from now on at the following address: mmcgovern@archchicago.org. Thank you. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern@archchicago.org Pastor s Notes

MY STAKE IN THINGS Reverend Ronald P. Stake Our pastor, Father McGovern, introduced me to the parish in the bulletin published the weekend of June 29, and at Masses celebrated the next weekend as we observed the 4th of July. This short piece allows me the opportunity to say something about myself and to share some ideas I have for the scope of my ministry as an associate pastor at St. Mary s. I am a native of the Southside of Chicago, the second of six children born to my late parents and now the oldest living member of my family except for one uncle, my Dad s youngest brother. I graduated from Leo High School and attended college, graduate school, and law school at DePaul University. Leaving that fine place of learning, I was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1976, and, with time out for the study of comparative law at the University of Cambridge, I practiced law as law clerk to a justice of the Appellate Court of Illinois and as an assistant State s attorney of Cook County. I left law practice behind in 1982 and attended the University of St. Mary of the Lake-Mundelein Seminary. I was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1985. My previous parochial assignments have been St. Mary of Celle (Berwyn), St. Barnabas, St. Germaine (Oak Lawn), St. Ferdinand, and Infant Jesus of Prague (Flossmoor). In 1996 I received a commission in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. I then served on active duty with sailors and Marines in eight separate duty stations around the world, the most recent being U.S. Naval Central Command (Fifth Fleet), U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain, and U.S Naval Station, Rota, Spain. I was retired from the Navy in 2011. When I returned to pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2011, I was asked to study canon law in order to work in the Office for Canonical Services, where I am now serving on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays each week as Associate Vicar for Canonical Services. In addition to the regular priestly ministry of the parish, I would like to offer three areas of special expertise for your consideration and support. The first is animating fellow lawyers in the practice of their faith and in combining faith with the practice of their profession. As a first move in this direction I want to place all lawyers of the parish on notice that the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago will gather for the annual Red Mass this year on Tuesday evening, October 7, at Holy Name Cathedral. A reception will follow at the Loyola Law School. Through this ancient celebration marking the start of the new court year (October Term), Catholic lawyers give a public and corporate witness of their identity and seek God s aid in their work for justice. The second area concerns my identification with and hope for the well-being of veterans of the uniformed services, both those now serving on active duty or in the reserves or National Guard and those who have served and are now discharged or retired. Soon we will have the occasion to once again celebrate Veterans Day, and this year I hope our parish can do so with some intention and attention. The Archdiocese of Chicago has a well-established ministry to veterans and I am hoping we can not only hear and appreciate what they have to offer, but also assist them in reaching the many veterans and active service members who live in our parish or nearby. Finally, as a canonist I have a special expertise to offer indirect service to those among us who might live in marriages not recognized by the Catholic Church or may be contemplating entering such a marriage, perhaps following a marriage that ended in civil divorce. The ministry of the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Chicago may be able to assist in bringing about a recognition of such marriages. I am proposing to offer a weekend workshop on the Church s marriage law and the procedures for petitioning for a declaration of invalidity of a prior marriage. I am happy to be with you at St. Mary s, and I pray our time together is blessed by our acceptance of the many graces our Lord has to offer.

Who has known the mind of the Lord? Through prayer our minds become better aligned with the mind of Christ and His will for us. If the Spirit is prompting you to know Christ as a priest, contact Fr. Francis Bitterman, fbitterman@archchicago.org or at 312-534-8298, or go to www.chicagopriest.com. For information on religious life, contact the Office for Religious/CAVA, cava@archchicago.org, 312.534.5240, and for the Permanent Diaconate program please contact Deacon Bob Puhala at 847-837-4564 or bpuhala@usml.edu. Religious Education Program Hello Everyone! My name is Peter Lesniewski and I am the new Director of Religious Education here at St. Mary s. I would like to extend a personal welcome to all of the parents and children of the Religious Education program. I am very excited to be serving the families of St. Mary s parish and to begin this academic school year. This year has been chosen by our Archbishop Cardinal Francis George to be a year that is dedicated to the seven Sacraments given to us by Jesus Christ himself. Following the request of Cardinal George, the Religious Education program at St. Mary s will strive to give your children an authentic understanding of the Sacraments as the life-giving nourishment that gives them real union with Christ and the grace to know and love Our Lord more intimately. I would also like to extend a personal invitation to all families who have not yet signed up for Religious Education this year. We welcome your children to become involved in Religious Education where they will be able to create friendships with other children in the parish and dive into the beautiful mystery of our Catholic faith. I look forward to meeting you all this year! In Christ, Mr. Peter Lesniewski Registration is still open and forms are available in the Religious Education Office or online http:// religiouseducation.churchofstmary.org/registration/ Reminder: Classes start the week of September 14th!
