TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION N ot un l the thirteenth century do we find a men on of a locked tabernacle. There s some evidence for eucharis c towers also, but o en these were in an obscure corner of the church, or even in the off limits sacristy. Many of us grew up making visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, but it s clear this would raise some medieval eyebrows in confusion! To the present day, the Eucharist is always reserved only in a side chapel in many cathedrals. The principal focus in a cathedral is always on the altar, symbol of Christ, and on the cathedra, symbol of the pastoral ministry of the bishop. In your parish church there is probably a sanctuary lamp, a permanently lit candle or oil lamp indica ng the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Some mes it s in a red glass, not for any par cular reason except that it s easy to find. There is a story of a bishop missioned to Papua New Guinea who was distressed to find no sanctuary lamps burning in his new diocese. The people pa ently explained that their churches were woven of grass, and that they decided to place a chief s standard, a trident, in front of the tabernacle. That was a sign in their culture that the chief was at home, like raising the flag over Buckingham Palace. The bishop, an Irish import, didn t appreciate the Bri sh reference, so he ordered the candles back. The first church to burn to the ground was the cathedral, and a er two more, the chief s tridents returned. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

It is very important that we cover these Masses, which will be heavily a ended, and it is important that we have the schedule in place well in advance (for Father Adrian s peace of mind). Please sign up online, or call Suzanne at the office if you are not online. We don t schedule Easter and Christmas Masses automa cally to give you some flexibility, but we do need to have a filled scheduled in order to con nue that prac ce. Thank you! Rosary for Peace Every Second Sunday You are welcome to join us Rosary for Peace at 10:00 am on the second Sunday of each month. We will meet in the church by the statue of Mary next to the organ. The next Rosary will be next Sunday, April 9, at 10:00 am. If you have any ques ons please contact Kerry Jambon. Ride to Mass Needed (esp. Easter Sunday) I received a call this week from a woman who would really like a ride to Mass. She is in her mid to late eigh es, and is ambulatory, but uses a cane. I think she is on oxygen, too, but I am not sure if that is full me. She can walk, but she does need the cane. She lives on North Rugby Road in Hendersonville. And yes, Immaculate Concep on is closer, but she says she goes to our church. It sounds like she would like a somewhat regular ride, and is not picky about which Mass, but she expressed special interest in Easter Sunday. Can someone help her out with a ride?
