I remember as a young child hearing a comedian talk about all the exercise Catholics got at Mass. It s true! However, done with the right disposition each gesture and posture reveals something about our relationship with the Risen Lord. Over the coming weeks, we ll look at them all. First, the Sign of the Cross. This is a very old prayer, and gesture said to be given by the apostles themselves. A confession of faith, a mark of discipleship and acceptance of suffering are all things the sign of the cross reveals. Making the sign of the cross with Holy Water reminds us of our baptismal promises. Roman Catholics make the sign of the cross by first touching their forehead (In the name of the Father), then their belly (and the Son) then their left shoulder and finally their right shoulder (and the Holy Spirit, Amen). As we make the cross, and recite the prayer it confirms our Trinitarian belief. The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God, but yet there are not three Gods but one God. We make the sign of the cross often, but always to begin and close our prayers. As the Mass is one long prayer, we do this at the beginning after Father greets us, and at the end before Father sends us forth. This is the first in a series of articles on Liturgy Literacy. Holy Family at Catholic Schools Week Mass Holy Family School kicked off Catholic Schools Week at Basilica St. Joseph Cathedral. Mass was attended by our Student council members. During Catholic Schools Week, our school celebrated our Catholic education by recognizing our students, our community, our teachers/staff and our Parish.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, ARISE is back again! Those who have participated with ARISE have found tremendous spiritual uplifting in God s love and have been eager to sign up again. This season of ARISE will help participants to go deeper into God s mercy and forgiveness. Perhaps, forgiveness is much easier said than done; yet one knows well that forgiveness is the key to embracing hope and serenity. Through the participation in this coming ARISE season, it is very hopeful that one will become more willing to forgive in order to fully live in peace and grace. Besides, ARISE is a most effective mechanisms in building fellowship and community. I invite everyone to sign up according to your group s interest. Small groups will begin meeting the week of February 26 th. Please sign-up after Mass, online, or in the parish office. I would like to express my gratitude to our speakers: Yacoub Moussa, Joe Maloof, Gail D Silva, Mimi Bini and Jean Thuc who gave their testimony as to how ARISE has benefitted them. Their testimonies and efforts are greatly appreciated. In regards to our 5-projects, the City of San Jose has finally granted us the permit to build our new main walkway and to install a 18-foot Cross on top of our vestibule main entrance. We also had multiple bids from different diocesan approved contractors. We accepted Hough Construction with the strong belief that Hough is the best contractor that matches our needs. The total cost for our walkway and Cross will be $109,300. This amount surpassed what we anticipated (~$80,000) at first, but thanks be to God and to you all; we've raised enough money to cover the increase. This project is expected to be completed around Easter time. Finally, we kicked off our Annual Diocesan Appeal Proclaiming God s Love, Together in Christ last weekend. It is my hope that we meet our goal of $205,000 as soon as possible. The Annual Diocesan Appeal helps extend the love of Christ throughout the diocese. If you haven t made a gift or a pledge, please prayerfully consider it and share your gifts in building Christ s Church on earth. No gift is too small and each one makes an impact. My ultimate goal is to have 100% participation in any shape or form in accordance to one s ability. Thank you for your ongoing support. May our loving God continue to bless our community and help us to fully embrace the true meaning of sharing our time, talent and treasure as a way to respond to God s love in thanksgiving. Catholic Apologist Karlo Broussard will be at Holy Family on February 25 from 10 11:30am in the Community Center Karlo addresses the modern myths that constitute skepticism toward Jesus. For example, he responds to claims such as, "Jesus never really existed; he s just a myth, and Jesus never claimed to be God; that was just an exaggerated claim of the early church." Karlo sets out to dispel such myths by providing the historical evidence for Jesus' explicit and implicit claims to divinity and why it s reasonable to believe such claims. Karlo will also be at other churches in the bay area, check out his schedule on our website, Facebook page or parish app. The Parish Office will be closed Monday, February 20th in observance of Presidents Day. They're an excellent choice as reusable containers. They come in various sizes to meet your left-overs needs and are safe to use in the freezer. They're nice because you can see inside (in case you forget to label them), and their shape means that they take up less room than plastic bowls. Toss them into the dishwasher for cleaning (thorough and won't melt like plastic). They're sturdy and will last far longer than plastic containers. Plus, they're people-friendly (contain no BPA). So, don't feel guilty about your FTC (Failure to Can) syndrome. Instead, feel good about helping the Earth by reusing something that will last and is not made from petroleum products. What is Children s Liturgy of the Word? Children s Liturgy of the Word is for kids (3-7 years old) to participate in the Mass at an age appropriate level. During the 9:30am Mass, children are invited to the chapel to listen to the Word at their level, reflect on the readings, and pray the prayers of the faithful just like the assembly! Children s Liturgy of the Word is not a class session or a teaching time but a time for children to fully and actively participate in the liturgy. Please pray for Children s Liturgy of the Word prayer leaders, and all of the young disciples of our parish! Children s Liturgy of the Word Prayer Leaders Needed Do you love children and helping them learn how to worship God in the Mass? Consider being a prayer leader for Children s Liturgy of the Word! Prayer leaders assist children to participate in the Mass at an age appropriate level, and prepare them to be a part of the community.
