Training Opportunities for Food Service Sanitation Managers Certification Brother Knight Ralph Maue has made arrangements with Mr. Tim O Connell of O Connell s Food Service to provide training courses at our Breese KC Hall for those wishing to obtain the Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification. The course provides training on food safety and handling, as well as a better understanding of why these things are important and the consequences that can occur. The training is open to anyone in the food service business wishing to obtain the FSSMC Certificate. The arrangement would allow Breese Council members to attend the 15 hour training course approved by the IL Dept. of Public Health, and take the certification exam with no tuition cost to member or council, (as long as other non-council tuition paying students attend the class as well). (The IL Dept. of Public Health requires a $35 certificate fee after passing the certification exam). Classes will run 2 days from 9 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute break for lunch. Refresher course training required for renewal of the FSSMC Certificate runs from 9 AM to approx. 3:30 PM on the first of the 2 days of training. The first training opportunity is scheduled for Mon, February 25 th and Wed. Feb 27 th from 9 AM to 5:30 PM both days, with a 30 minute break for lunch. Additional dates scheduled are April 14 & 16, July 14 & 16 and Oct. 13&15. Page 4 Papal Visit - April 15th-20th The following is an excerpt of a letter from our Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson: It is with joy and hope-filled anticipation that the Knights of Columbus awaits the first pastoral journey of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the United States, April 15-20, 2008. For several years we have proudly proclaimed ourselves to be In Solidarity With Our Priests and Bishops. That solidarity is manifested in a preeminent way through our fidelity to the Supreme Pontiff. Therefore, in preparation for Pope Benedict XVI s visit, the Supreme Council has developed several ways for Knights to express our being In Solidarity With Our Holy Father. The first of these avenues is to join in prayer for the success of the Holy Father s visit. To this end, papal visit prayer cards are available and are being distributed in every country in which our Order is present, in the hope that brother Knights around the world can join in prayer as the Holy Father comes to the United States. Knights are also encouraged to visit www.kofc.org and add their names to the Spiritual E-Bouquet of prayers for the papal visit. The second way to celebrate the Holy Father s visit is to strengthen our Order by adding many more members to our ranks. Each time I have had the honor of meeting with Pope Benedict, the Holy Father has clearly expressed his great appreciation for the Knights of Columbus and our unparalleled service to the Church, not only to the Vatican but particularly at the local parish level. We do so much now with 1.7 million members, but we must ask ourselves how much more we could do with 2 million or 3 million members just imagine if your council had twice as many members as it does today! This potential to increase our charitable and volunteer works should drive and inspire our recruitment efforts. Therefore, we are conducting a special papal visit membership campaign in honor of the Holy Father, to build up our Order so that we might be an even stronger right arm of the Church and our parish priests. As part of this membership campaign, every First Degree until June 30 should be held in honor of Pope Benedict XVI. Special new member certificates will follow under separate cover for distribution to Knights initiated at these degrees. Additionally, through June 30, proposers of new members will receive a special recruiter commemorative coin, the design of which is shown at the top of this memorandum. Finally, the names of all new members added through June 30 will be inscribed in a tribute book that will be presented to the Holy Father as a sign of our growth in his honor and of our increased ability to be of service to the Church. Thank you in advance for engaging your council in these programs. Let us also join together in fervent prayer for the intercession of our beloved founder, the Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney, for the success of these initiatives and of the Holy Father s visit to the United States. Papal visit prayer cards will be available for those attending our February 14 th Family Mass and regular council meeting and we hope to have a supply to include in the March newsletter mailing. Papal Visit Prayer Almighty Father, who pours forth blessings in abundance upon us, we humbly pray that you will inspire, guide and protect Pope Benedict XVI on his pastoral visit to the United States. Lord God, bless our Holy Father who comes as a messenger of peace and charity to all people of faith and good will. May his presence in the United States serve to build up the bonds that unite us who are each made in your image and likeness, and may his teaching and witness strengthen the faith of the People of God. Father, we lovingly entrust Pope Benedict s visit to the care of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Queen of the Americas. Through her prayers may he be preserved from all harm, and may he shine forth with the truth of the Gospel that he proclaims, and may his presence among us foster a renewal of the Church in our country. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
