October 28, 2018 4 From the Pastor s Desk Take courage get up, He is calling you (Mk 10:46-52) The story of Bartimaeus takes place in Jericho, a city of trade and of palm trees. When Bartimaeus, a blind beggar sitting at the roadside heard that Jesus was passing by, he cried a prayer for help: Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. He was rebuked by many, but he persisted. Jesus stopped and said, Call him. He threw off his cloak and ran to Jesus to state his need. His faith was immediately rewarded. He received the gift of sight, both physical and spiritual. He then followed Jesus on the way. Bartimaeus, son of honor, had lost his dignity Bartimaeus means son of Timaeus. The word Timaeus comes from the Greek word tima, which means honor, reverence. Thus, his name means one who is honored, revered. In his present miserable condition, i.e., sitting in the dust by the roadside, begging, this son of honor was aware that he was not living up to his name. He therefore struggled to move from the darkness of his life to the bright light of Christ. The day of his greatest opportunity When Bartimaeus heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by, he decided to act. This shortest sermon of seven words prompted him to ask for Jesus help. He had waited for years for this day. This might be a once in a lifetime, golden opportunity and he was determined not to miss it! The cry of faith for deliverance The crowd around Bartimaeus didn t have any compassion for him as he cried Jesus, son of David, have pity on me (Mk 10:47). They ordered him instead to shut up. That didn t stop Bartimaeus. He needed something from Jesus and was determined to get it. When Jesus heard the cry of this beggar, He stopped in the middle of the road and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. What a glorious moment that must have been for this blind beggar. His faith was acknowledged and he received the healing he sought from Jesus, and more! The Lord is never too busy to hear your voice We are at different stages in our spiritual journey. Some may still be sitting by the roadside, unable to see where they are going. Some may be discouraged for various reasons, and sometimes by their own culture, not to call for Jesus help. Others, on the other hand, are fortunate to have friends and a Church community who encourage them in seeking and eventually meeting Jesus. Bartimaeus teaches us to be persistent in prayer and to have a strong faith in the healing power of Jesus. He also encourages us to throw our cloaks behind and follow Him, the Living Light. Jesus is passing by He is waiting for your call. Will you make use of this golden opportunity? God bless you, Fr. John Francis Thank you to all who organized and took part in our parish s activities the past two Sundays: the Health Fair and the Ministry Fair. We are all grateful to God that He has blessed our parish family with members who joyfully and lovingly serve others for His honor and glory!

These sessions in Spanish are given every Monday at 10:00 am and repeated at 7:00 pm in the Faith Formation Center. Please call Sister Alice for any further details. This Sunday is National Priestly Sunday, a day in which we give thanks for all of your priests. We thank them for their selfless dedication and commitment to serving God and His people. Here at St. Nicholas of Tolentine we are indeed blessed with our wonderful priests. Because Father John Francis would not be here today, last Sunday we prayed and blessed him at the 10:45Mass. Then in the early afternoon the Parish Vocation Committee served all of our priests a lovely lunch as a small way to express our gratitude for their having said "yes" to God's call to their priestly vocation. At each Mass this weekend we will be praying in a special way for the celebrant. They too are with all of us who are trying to live up to our call for sanctity. In a special way today may each of our priests feel our appreciation and gratitude. Last Sunday though it was quite windy and cold, our Faith Formation children surrounded Blessed Mother at the Grotto and prayed the rosary for peace, for our families, and for our priests. Unfortunately the pictures came out too dark to publish here. Next Sunday the Faith Formation children will be celebrating All Saints Day, A great number of them will be dressed as specific saints and process around the interior of the Church at the entrance. We especially invite all of their parents, grandparents, godparents and extended members of the family to be present for this Mass. Our children need our example and support. Thank you to those who came to the Ministry Fair last Sunday, Especially those who signed up to offer their services in Faith Formation. If there is anyone else who feels they can help in anyway please call Sr. Alice at.718-591-6536. God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Directora de Formación de Fe
