For the past few decades the U.S. Catholic Bishops have been concerned with the need for our church to continue challenging its membership to fuller participation through the use of their time, talent and treasure. This approach to church support is called Stewardship and, although it has been around since biblical times, for many of our Catholics it is still a new concept. We have emerged from a largely immigrant church. The early Catholics who founded our parishes and schools worked very hard to provide these beautiful structures for us. They often gave of their own time and talent to build them and a large proportion of their income, meager though it may have been, went to support their church. With the passage of time, and the many improvements we have seen in the quality of life in this great country, many Catholics - the descendants of these generous people - have directed their lives and resources in other ways. Many no longer support the church in any way, or others only occasionally. For many years the church has relied on raffles, bingo, social events, penny socials, etc. to raise extra cash when needed. This is fine, but we know something is wrong when we have to rely on these events to meet our day to day operating expenses because our regular revenue no longer meets our growing needs. We here at St. Bernard s, for instance have had to cope with an average increase of 4% to 6% in our expenses each year for the past few years because of having to heat and maintain our church as well as our obligation to pay on the debt still existing on the church. Now we have added to our operating expenses when we opened our new Parish Center. Our ordinary revenue, however, has not increased, and in fact, for the past year, has actually decreased. It is not hard to see where we are headed unless we begin to see things a little differently. Ten years ago Fr. Dennis Reardon and the Finance Council introduced Stewardship to the parish. It was their hope that this new approach to fund-raising would help us increase our income, but more importantly, bring to all our parishioners a greater awareness of their role in the life and future of the parish. Stewardship asks us to put God s priorities before our own. Good stewards give the first portion of their gifts of time, talent and treasure to the Lord s work in gratitude for His many blessings. This is truly sacrificial giving which brings blessings and benefits to those who choose to give this way. Stewardship is not just a program for increased giving, however, it is a life-long process. The message of stewardship reminds us to put God first in our lives, being detached from material possessions and sharing our gifts of time, talent, and treasure with the church and the poor in gratitude for all that God has given us. Christian stewardship is not an option for Catholics - it is how we express our membership in the Body of Christ. Look for more information in coming weeks as we prepare to release our Annual Financial Report and join me in thanking God for the many blessings He has bestowed on our parish through your generosity. Fr. Jack ST. BERNARD PASTORAL COUNCIL Over the last few weeks we have been announcing the formation of our New Pastoral Council, a Board that will meet 4 times each year and whose membership will help us to plan for the pastoral needs of the Parish. We are looking for 2 At-Large members who would like to serve for a 2 year term. If you are interested, simply call the parish office (295-0387) and give your name. At the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday, October 1 the two names will be drawn by lottery to determine the 2 new members. (for a full description of the new Council and its membership, go to our web site, www.stbernardnk.org and look for the Parish Bulletin of September 10 th. 2

Evans as the main celebrant. The Red Mass is held annually for those who work in judiciary and other areas of public service in Rhode Island. Father John Connaughton, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Bridgeport, will be the guest homilist. During the Mass, the Bishop requests guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek justice, and offers the opportunity to reflect on what Catholics believe is the God-given power and responsibility of all in the legal profession.
