We welcome, serve, and educate.

Dear Parishioners, Jesus restores hearing and speech to the deaf man. He didn't just pat him on the head, as he was asked to do. The poor and the outcasts of society are so used to being patronized that they are often glad even of that. But Jesus took him off by himself away from the crowd not to embarrass him and restored his hearing. Jesus enabled him to know what was going on and he gave him a voice with which to make himself heard. He brought him from beyond the margins into society. This is the work of the church. The work of the church leadership is to accept and bring those who are marginalized back into the society and into the church. For God, there are no outcasts, only people he created out of his infinite love. I am very distraught by what is happening in the US Catholic Church. The demand made to Pope Francis to step down is not to be taken lightly. This issue is taking the church away from the real issues facing the church- lack of accountability, clericalism, sexual abuse and cover up. The church has to continue on the path of renewal and cleansing so that the hierarchy does not go back to their old ways of handling issues in the church. The laity and the clergy have to come together to make this happen. Yours Sincerely, Fr. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION- Our national memory will keep this day holy for generations to come, as we remember the innocent dead. In the first hours of crisis, we stood vigil, we prayed from the heart, and we celebrated the human ability to draw light out of terrible darkness. Stories of that terrible day necessarily drift to tales of heroism, courage, dignity, faith, solidarity, hope, community. The church learned long ago through hard experience that "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Perhaps the victims of 9/11 have gifts to bring that we are only just discovering as believers in a just and loving God. They are teaching us still, and today is a day for lighting candles at the table and being silent for a moment before the abundance of God's gifts. Today reminds us that we are capable of acts of indescribable beauty even in the face of great evil. Fr. John Coleman, S.J. September 12, 7pm St. Anselm s welcomes back Fr. John Coleman, S.J. Fr. Coleman will talk briefly about the radical breakthrough of Laudato Si; namely, that all creatures reflect the glory of God and that their worth is not just for use by humans and that they, too, will be part of the new creation. But the main focus of his talk will be on what parishes in the United States have been doing and what they can do to put Laudato Si into effect. Fr. Coleman s talk coincides with the opening of the Global Climate Action Summit (globalclimateactionsummit.org) taking place in San Francisco on September 12-14, 2018. Jesuit scholar, Fr. John Coleman, is associate pastor at St. Ignatius Church, San Francisco, and former professor of social ethics at Loyola Marymount University. He has written extensively on Catholic social teaching, creation care and eco-justice. St. Anselm s Annual Oktoberfest DATE: Saturday, September 29th TIME: 6:15p (After 5p Mass) to 10 pm PLACE: Centennial Hall and Courtyard Enjoy Beer, Brats, Sauerkraut, Pretzels, AND LIVE MUSIC Tickets prices are: $30 Individual, $75 Family, and $15 Seniors (65 and older) RSVP BY Sept. 21: Sissy -st.anselmoffice@att.net, or 415-453-2342 St. Anselm Church Bible Study LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BIBLE: Come join us in concluding our study of the Gospel of St. Luke and beginning our study of the book of Revelation. MOC Work Rewarded- On Friday, August 31, the tenants of 129 and 137 Canal St. reached a legal agreement with their landlord. Under the agreement, there will be no increase until January 1st, 2019. And then, the $800 rent increase will be implemented in smaller installments. The landlord has also agreed to work proactively with tenants to make all needed repairs. In sum, the agreement saves each family approximately $7,000 over the next two years. "I'm happy with the result. I will have to move eventually, because we can't afford to pay the full amount, but at least it gives us time to make a plan," says Timoteo M., one of the tenants' elected leaders, and a father of three. "Now I'll be able to sleep!" he grinned. Legal Aid believes that the pressure created by MOC's involvement gave the tenants more leverage in their negotiations with the landlord's lawyers. It's joyful and energizing to respond to crises like this one, and we should celebrate this win. And-- we need to keep our eye on the prize. At the end of the day, most of these families are still going to have to move out of Marin-- unless they can absorb an extra $9,600 per year in housing costs. The most impactful thing we can do is still to fight the long, incremental battle to build real protections for renters and the long-term power we need to address the housing crisis. On Tuesday September 11th, at 5:30 PM, let's show up at Civic Center in large numbers to show our county supervisors that we support a Just Cause for Eviction ordinance-- for these families, as well as the rest of our renting neighbors in Marin.
