TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Society of the Propagation of the Faith has written to me expressing their thanks to you for your generosity to the Marianists Missions upon their visit here in July. It states: Thank you and your parishioners for your hospitality and generosity. Hopefully the appeal gave the members of your parish the opportunity to understand more fully the missionary task of the universal Church. The $1,032 donation from your parish is surely needed and appreciated by The Marist Province of the U.S. The generous response of your parishioners is a tangible example of their prayerful and sacrificial participation in our common mission. If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages? Would a fly without wings be called a walk? If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent? What was the best thing before sliced bread? How is it possible to have a civil war? AT THE TABLE In today s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple like home. She doesn t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom s table. There they may and can eat and drink deeply. Today s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God s will and act on it. When you go away on vacation, please remain faithful to your weekly offering. Please offer your envelopes before going away or when you return. If you do not use envelopes...why not? Please try to be a little extra generous when you are here. The bills never go on vacation; they keep coming all the time. THANK YOU! The Collection for the weekend of August 9th was: $2,004 We are SURPRISINGLY low this week! Please bring in your back envelopes; doing so is the only way we can hope to average $2,300 per week. Thank you!
