HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017 Brothers and sisters No one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. There are different forms of service, but the same Lord. There are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. On this great day we recall a new life given to the apostles and the church, we see the signs of tongues of fire, hear the noise and feel the wind which accompanied the Spirit. That same Spirit has directed the church through twenty centuries with great blessings, trying difficulties, but always manifesting an abiding presence. How true that is for us today. I ask what are the gifts present and needed by the church today. I wonder about the service which the church can provide to our needy world. I look to observe the Spirit at work among us. Yes, the words of Paul are manifest today. But I also must ask what am I doing to use the gifts I have received, or what service can I provide, or what work needs to be done, and If I don t do it, it will always remain undone. I ask that the Spirit of Pentecost will awaken me. CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. Lago, Pastor Rev. Joseph Miele, Weekend Assistant Rev. Lewis Papera, Weekend Assistant Rev. BEACH REACH 2017 JUNE 25, 2017 STAR OF THE SEA CHAPEL 10:00 MASS: Blessing of Surf boards and Summer Items Join us in welcoming summer visitors to our parish! Message from Fr. Bill As we celebrate Pentecost we recall how the Holy Spirit united the different people by all understanding each other. We pray for the Holy Spirit to do the same for the different parishioners of the cohort parishes as we move forward together. With this in mind, all of the parishioners of St. Denis, St. Martha, St. Peter, and Epiphany parishes will be reading the same memo from a member of the implementation team in a new feature that is to be found in each of our parish bulletins: Cohort Corner. I ask you to read that below. Cohort Corner Inaugural Edition Greetings from a member of Cohort 20 Implementation Team! Our Diocese of Trenton began the Faith in Our Future process over a year ago when the 107 parishes were grouped into cohorts and asked to reflect on their own local landscapes and forward recommendations to the Diocese Planning Committee. What is a cohort?, one might ask. I like to think of it as a family or group of like-minded individuals. Cohort 20 consists of the parishes of the Church of Epiphany, Saint Denis, Saint Martha and Saint Peter. On January 25, 2017, informed by the above process, Bishop O Connell announced the configuration of change to take place across the Diocese with the purpose of developing new ways to foster, promote and witness to our faith in order to address and reengage an ever-changing environment. A Collaborative Model was recommended for our Cohort: enter into new, formal relationships; share resources/programs and do together what a single parish may not be able to do alone. And so, here we are! The Cohort Implementation Team is meeting to plan meaningful ways to work together. Being new to the process and attending the first meeting, I found the room to be full of people who care deeply about our Catholic Church and are committed to Christ. Each parish sent 2-4 representatives and the Pastors of each parish were present: Father Mike from Church of Epiphany, Father Bill from Saint Denis, Father Dave from Saint Martha and Father Bob from Saint Peter. Together, we discerned five areas around which we would construct collaboration: (1) Mass schedules, (2) Adult Faith Formation, (3) Youth Ministry, (4) Communication and (5) Support to Saint Peter School. The work of creating action items for each of the five areas, developing plans, responsibility chains and timelines were done together beginning and closing in prayer each time. All believers are intended to benefit from these efforts and each parishioner across our family cohort deserves to know the process and intention by which these words and actions are taking place. Perhaps it is a holy coincidence that 5/31/17 is the date by which the annual Cohort Implementation Plan is due for the first time. Right between celebrating the Ascension of our Lord and the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost we submit the product of our labor. We began together in various parish meeting rooms, a bit unsure about what was happening and how to proceed quite like the Apostles in the Upper Room. But Jesus entered, giving His peace and bringing wholeness AND the Holy Spirit who transforms fear and gives power to go out. Perhaps it is no coincidence at all that the primary definition of the word cohort is an ancient roman military unit, 1/10 of a roman legion. I pray that Cohort 20 be, in fact, a cohort for Christ! Keep an eye out for more Cohort Corner news in the future! Sue Byington

We welcome into our parish family the following children who were brought to the Lord through the Sacrament of Baptism: Brody Justin Branning Juliana Renee Branning Salvatore Stagliano III May the grace of the sacrament remain with them always.
