FROM THE RECTORY Today I spent walking around the nature reserve on Poole Harbour at Arne. The sun was shining, there was a gentle breeze, it was perfect. Well almost! We went hoping to see Dartford Warblers (a delightful and fairly rare bird) that lives on the reserve. When we arrived, we were told that they had been spotted near one of the hides. We headed there excitedly and spent time looking around carefully, scanning the area with our binoculars. We kept our eyes open through the day but the bird watchers amongst you will not be surprised to hear that the birds we went to see remained elusive. We were tempted to be disappointed: no Dartford Warblers. On the other hand, I couldn t begin to list what we had seen and heard in the time we spent at Arne including, what, when we looked it up, turned out to be a local speciality, the tiny Silver Studded Blue butterfly. This summer might not turn out as you had hoped for many reasons but I hope that along the way, you will be encouraged by the unexpected and unlooked for signs of hope or gestures of care and support. Life rarely pans out as we might plan and when it does, sometimes what we thought we wanted turns out not to be quite the prize we d anticipated. We human beings have become so capable at controlling and managing most aspects of our lives that it is easy to forget that there are some things that simply cannot be managed but must simply be borne. May we have the grace and steadfastness to be those who can ride out a storm, the wisdom to know when we must change course, and the courage necessary to offer or accept a helping hand. From the Bishop of Bath & Wells, August 2014 Dennis Lillee, the Australian fast bowler once hit a batsman on the leg. Although he was given out, he remained at the crease and Lillee forcibly insisted he must go. The batsman replied: Dennis I d love to go but I daren t move. I think you have broken my leg. Moving isn t always easy, and although Jane and I have only been here a short while we are already feeling settled and at home. Thank you to everyone for making us so welcome since we arrived. The batsman s words I daren t move got me thinking about how we as Christians and we as a Church also often find moving difficult. There have been so many changes in society, in attitudes and in technology in recent years, the development of IT being an obvious example, that I am sure there are times when we wish it would all slow down and we want to say I m not moving. But the gospel calls us to move in all sorts of ways. Our spiritual lives should not be allowed to become stagnant or static. God is always drawing us and inviting us into a deeper relationship with him. He also calls us to move outwards and move onwards in loving service to our families, neighbours and the communities where we live and work. I am being challenged at the moment by the words of 1Peter be eager to do good. As we open our lives to God the Holy Spirit may he find us eager and willing to keep moving in our journey of discipleship as we follow Jesus and seek to make him known to other people. Michelangelo, one of the greatest artists and sculptors of all time once said: Lord, grant that I may desire more than I can accomplish. That may be a bit more than some of us can pray, but let s all be praying: Lord, keep me moving. With warmest best wishes +Peter Bath and Wells 4
